5 people were shot during a bar fight around the corner from my apt. Can we stop shooting each other? Thanks.[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 11:35 AM. Reason : Typoooooo]
6/21/2015 11:31:49 AM
^Aren't handguns illegal in NYC? How the hell did they get their hands on guns!
6/21/2015 11:35:33 AM
I'm going to assume from the south. It's like having a peeing section of a pool. [Edited on June 21, 2015 at 11:39 AM. Reason : Pools]
6/21/2015 11:38:01 AM
No we can't stop shooting each other. I mean you have people giving each other the death penalty because they wear a different color bandana, stand on a different corner, fucked the same person, spilled a drink on their shoe etc. People in this country more than any other do not value life.
6/21/2015 11:42:00 AM
^yepprobably goes back to Johnson and the war on poverty. basically the gubberment has replaced fathers in the home. AND there are just as high as a percentage of people in poverty now as back then. way to go proggies
6/21/2015 11:46:49 AM
^^^Maybe they got them from Camden, or one of the other northern cities that leads the nation in homicides. Sorry, New Orleans, you're the only southern city that made the top 15 so far this year.[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 11:49 AM. Reason : i'm gonna call St. Louis "northern" in this case]
6/21/2015 11:48:50 AM
Nice way to spin those stats. Most of the top homicode rates are in the midwest and the south.
6/21/2015 12:17:51 PM
The Midwest definitely wins. Or looses.
6/21/2015 12:24:16 PM
6/21/2015 12:26:26 PM
Yeah E Man, most of them are in the south...15 East Chicago, IN14 Compton, CA13 Baltimore, MD12 St. Louis, MO11 Harvey, IL10 Newark, NJ9 New Orleans, LA8 Trenton, NJ7 Detroit, MI6 Flint, MI5 Saginaw, MI4 Chester, PA3 Gary, IN2 Camden, NJ1 East St. Louis, IL
6/21/2015 12:26:30 PM
Whats the definition of south?
6/21/2015 12:29:20 PM
So treetwista can orient himself...[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 12:43 PM. Reason : G]
6/21/2015 12:42:07 PM
I'd move VA into the south.
6/21/2015 12:46:50 PM
It's almost like cities rife with poverty have more homicides. Crazy!
6/21/2015 12:51:48 PM
Having money makes you not want to kill the man that fucked your girl 6 years ago, wears a red bandana instead of a blue one, and stands on first street instead of second. k I understand how this works
6/21/2015 12:59:53 PM
That map must be legit. I mean, Philadelphia is definitely in the midwest.[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 2:39 PM. Reason : oh they split up pennsylvania...i still only see one southern city]
6/21/2015 2:38:31 PM
^^^Yes, but on the other hand, if poverty is the main factor, you'd think the South would come out on top of the murder charts. Cause we are the poorest. So there's clearly something else going on with places like Flint, Detroit, Camden, Newark, Compton, Trenton, Gary, etc... I can write about it, but I think it's evident, and I gotta go.
6/21/2015 2:54:55 PM
Those places are the poorest in the country.[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 3:12 PM. Reason : Fat fingers]
6/21/2015 3:12:30 PM
Those cities arent cities but are concentrated ghettos in places that overall arent as relatively poor as somewhere like mississippi but have historically had high levels or corruption including in areas of government including policing and whose secondary economies were based on manufacturing.Detroit new orleans st louis and baltimore are the only true cities on that list.
6/21/2015 3:14:21 PM
^^No, they're not.[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 3:15 PM. Reason : ?]
6/21/2015 3:14:30 PM
Have you been to these cities???
6/21/2015 3:45:31 PM
No, of course not. I'm not tryna get shot.I'm not saying they're not poor--they do have a poverty problem. And they have poverty in proximity to wealth, which I suspect is more correlated with violence than poverty alone. But, down here, we just smoke meth and lament the closing of our only movie theater cause there weren't enough patrons with money to keep the two screens running...plus, the owner didn't like how we robbed it at least four times a year. But, unless we catch them with our wives, we generally don't murder teenagers...so we got that going for us.
6/21/2015 4:14:33 PM
Okay, so I really did expect to see more Southern cities on that list because we are the poorest. I've been trying to find where they are--like, Jackson or something. But instead what I keep finding is that, overall, the South does have the highest murder rate (by far), but our murders are more traditional (bar fights, love triangles, etc...) and are thusly spread out along with the population. So I guess the only thing we've really got going for us is that we don't keep all our murderers in a handful of places...plus, it apparently is a pretty safe region if you don't mess with your neighbor's wife, cheat at cards, or talk shit about someone's beloved sports team.[Edited on June 21, 2015 at 5:55 PM. Reason : Also, supposedly our hot weather is too blame. ]
6/21/2015 5:53:34 PM
Basically there are no thugs north of Atlanta until you get to Virginia BeachRank City30 Baton Rouge, LA29 Youngstown, OH28 San Bernardino, CA27 Oakland, CA26 Barberton, OH25 Poughkeepsie, NY24 Cincinnati, OH23 Petersburg, VA22 Wilmington, DE21 York, PA20 East Palo Alto, CA19 Jackson, MS18 Wilkes-Barre, PA17 Birmingham, AL16 East Point, GA15 East Chicago, IN14 Compton, CA13 Baltimore, MD12 St. Louis, MO11 Harvey, IL10 Newark, NJ9 New Orleans, LA8 Trenton, NJ7 Detroit, MI6 Flint, MI5 Saginaw, MI4 Chester, PA3 Gary, IN2 Camden, NJ1 East St. Louis, IL
6/21/2015 6:02:55 PM
I don't have statistics but I'd bet on a relative basis those are some of the poorest, most poverty stricken areas in the country.Much of the poverty in the South is rural where there simply isn't as largr an opportunity for crime.
6/21/2015 6:04:19 PM
^^That feels right, but for murder, North Carolina just barely beat Virginia in 2010.Every list I've found--murder rates, violent crime, gun crime, gun violence--that reports data by state features Southern states at the top. In fact, we're usually all represented on the list by spot 20.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States_by_stateWe really are the poorest and the killingest.Like, they're blaming the nation's high murder rate, when compared to other industrialized nations, almost entirely on the South. In an old NYT article, they described it as the "Southern curse."
6/21/2015 6:20:23 PM
Maybe not as much opportunity but I'd bet the people:guns ratio is much higher in the south than any of those cities on the list
6/21/2015 6:26:08 PM
Highly doubt that
6/21/2015 7:07:39 PM
Im pretty sure if you circled off south raleigh or whatever part of durham is dangerous as its own city itnwould suddenly rank high. Just because the whole area is one coty, doesnt mean it is less violent. Compton is the most notable example of a sectioned off "city". These cities only exist to avoid the integration of schools and funding.
6/21/2015 7:26:14 PM
East SL, Camden and Gary are all cut off from larger cities by state lines. They depend on St Louis, Philly and Chicago and exist bc of them.
6/21/2015 7:35:39 PM
6/21/2015 8:17:56 PM
Excellent point. The poor people in major cities have no idea how much worse it can get. There's places in NC were people live in 100+ year old shit hole farm houses with no electricity or running water. If you don't believe me go to Bertie/Hertford county and ride down them back roads.
6/21/2015 9:47:09 PM
And their murders dont make the stats
6/21/2015 11:03:26 PM
Like all the mafia murders in the northeast where they never find the body
6/22/2015 12:34:31 AM
^I was wondering about that, too.
6/22/2015 1:08:25 AM
We're talking about mafia ghost stats now? Come on guys.
6/22/2015 7:33:10 AM
Are there really THAT many mafia hits these days?
6/22/2015 8:27:51 AM
Dentaldamn trying to act like organized crime is a myth
6/22/2015 9:55:12 AM
It's a ridiculous rabbit hole to go down guessing how many people the various crime organizations have killed.
6/22/2015 10:09:56 AM
Equally as ridiculous as guessing how many unreported murders there are down the "back roads" of "Bertie/Hertford county"
6/22/2015 10:24:23 AM
Ha. Agreed
6/22/2015 11:15:57 AM
I never said there were murders down there. Actually in my life time I think there may have been 10 people murdered in that area. I was pointing out that poverty in the south is far worse than up north, and crime does not correlate with poverty.
6/22/2015 11:21:04 AM
I'm just calling out The E Man
6/22/2015 11:37:22 AM
^^From what I've been reading, poverty is clearly correlated with crime and violent crime. They're suggesting that the murder problem in the South is a result of poverty, a legacy of violence, and a kind of pride/honor we might more closely associate with cultures in the Middle East...except instead of stoning people or cutting their heads off...it's just a couple drunk dudes who go get their guns.
6/22/2015 12:09:13 PM
I'd like to see education correlated with violence. Just because crime happens more in poor areas does not mean poverty is the cause. For example Aaron Hernandez was rich and still murdering people.Theres more to it than "I'm poor so I'll kill people"
6/22/2015 12:36:32 PM
It has a lot to do with policing. Id say policing is the number 1 factor. All of those places on the list have incredibly corrupt police and 0 public trust in police. The poverty means they are defenseless against the bs and cant move.Rural nc dont have to worry about calling the police only to be beaten and arrested for drugs they planted. This means they can call the police to solve disputes and report any violence. The plaves on thenlist are much more afraid of the police than the gangs so the violence goes unchecked and everyone knows they can do shit and no ones snitchin.Treetwista trying to act like rural people have it worse. They can move. They more often chose to live that life and love it.[Edited on June 22, 2015 at 12:46 PM. Reason : Racism poverty and policing are all part of it]
6/22/2015 12:45:00 PM
^"They can move"Most rural NC areas have very old populations. Most of the young people graduate high school, go off to college/military etc and never return.
6/22/2015 12:47:10 PM
They can move to another place on the list away from their support system
6/22/2015 12:51:28 PM
