these jokers are around all the time. i've lost count of how many 8+ ft long sharks i've seen caught off of various NC piers. i got so tired of the damn things that i'd just pull my bait up when they moved in. bogue inlet pier moved their fish cleaning tables out to the end of the pier because they were attracting so many sharks right in the surf and freaking out the tourists.

most folks would never swim in the ocean again if they just took a plane or helicopter ride over the coast. they're everywhere.

^^this. can't count the times I'm catching bait in my boat just off the beach and seen many many sharks just 50yrds from swimmers in the water. Especially yaupon/oak isl down to little river. They are thick in that area of the coast.

I just got back from Ocean Isle... they had one attack on Thursday.

My 2 year old so fucking horrible I took him out in the ocean like I was donating a newborn to a White Walker.

No luck.

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. $10,000 for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

That's why I don't like going in the water when people are fishing. Not debating whether people should be able to fish where they want or not but people fishing is definitely part of the problem.

I was at Holden, which is the strip between Oak and Ocean, a few weeks ago and saw a man of war and two sting rays.

Ocean life is getting crazy out that way.

Speaking of people fishing on the beach... what's the etiquette for that???

You have families swimming and then there's a dude fishing in the middle of everyone.

It kinda bothers me. It's a free world and they have absolutely every right to enjoy the beach... but how far away should you be from someone fishing?

I don't fish, so I have no idea how the lure moves, but I had to get my 4 yr old to move away a few times.

I've also watched There's Something About Mary too many times and I'm overly paranoid about getting a hook in the mouth when they cast their rod.

I grew up surf fishing w/ dad. He always had us out there early, way before the crowds, and once people started swimming later in the morning (maybe 10 AM or so) we packed it up for the day. I can't stand people who walk out to cast in the middle of a crowd of swimmers.

Another side benefit of quitting early is you don't have people asking you how the fishing's going every 3 minutes.

yeah I've usually seen surf fishers either far down away form swimmers, in the morning, or late in the evening.

piers are probably what you want to stay away from the most because they're using all sorts of bait, and they're cutting stuff up and throwing it over basically chumming the water.

I was just down at Oak Island weekend before last and there were 4-5 people fishing during the day just in my area. One dude has his pole so far up the beach that I didn't notice it, and walked right into his line.

Twista, why did you bold this? It's common knowledge that most shark attacks occur in less than 3 feet of water.

One of the comments on the articles about the shark bites yesterday said that the girl who was bit was right next to the pier when it happened.

I was at Oak Island this weekend and there were those portuguese man o' war jellyfish washing up on the shore everywhere so we were afraid to get in the water.

Turned out they were a blessing in disguise because I would have been in there all day otherwise.

I love to surf fish. The licensed angler has the right of way and if someone swims into a line and gets hooked up then it's their own damn fault for not being aware of your surroundings. You are in the ocean, you must always be aware of what is going on around you, and if you can't use your common sense to not swim where I am fishing then it's not my problem when you get hooked up. I'll just cut the line and rig my shit back up and keep fishing.

That being said....

Once the water gets warm enough to where there are THAT many people swimming, the fishing starts to suck anyway, and the majority of people surf fishing at that point don't really know what they are doing. Summer is the worst time for surf fishing. Take that shit to the pier or on a boat.
Also, I tend to get out there early and set up my spot so that when people do come out they can see my spot of water I picked and decide to swim accordingly. If the fishing is good that day, I'll be damned if I pack up early just so people can swim.

There was one time I had to warn a drunk lady several times about my line, I finally got her away from my line by telling her that I was not above chumming the water.

Also....Carteret County has had like 6 shark attacks in the past 60 years. I've been swimming in these waters for 28 of them. I am fully aware that there are large sharks out there swimming. I've caught several while fishing. These recent attacks aren't going to keep me out of the water.
Next week, I'll post a thread showing my shark attack injuries!

So when does the shark hunt start? Its obvious this shark now thinks human is on the menu.

I don't get how you don't shut the beach down after the first attack. STUPID

So you're not a law breaker, just inconsiderate- got it.

If there are people out in the water, your first thought shouldn't be "oh this makes the fishing suck, I'll go in" it should be for the well being of the people in the water. Snagging isn't the only issue but so are shark attacks, as evinced by this thread.

If someone wants to fish before 10 and after 6, then more power too them. But reasonably you can't expect people, primarily kids, to see and identify if you're fishing. Waves move people farther than they think, so a child who was playing away from you could easily get pushed by you. Perhaps this means they miss the line, perhaps it means they get tangled or hook or perhaps it means they get maimed by a shark that got wind of your bait or a smaller fish that was after your bait.

Again, what you're doing clearly isn't illegal but legality isn't the only litmus test for proper behavior. The fact you are willing to fish without regard to the interest or safety to the other 99% out there around you is very telling.

Well, I find it very inconsiderate when people are swimming when I'm trying to catch dinner. I had my line out there before you started to swim.
Parents need to teach their kids to be aware of their surroundings while in the ocean. I grew up swimming in the waters while people were fishing and I never got tangled or snagged. I have always been aware of where I am in the ocean in relation to where my spot is on the beach or where others are fishing.
The ocean is a body of water that you don't disregard. It's constantly changing and moving. Every day is different, every moment is different. You must respect the ocean. Respect the fact that there are dangerous creatures in the ocean and respect the fact that people use the ocean, legally, for things other that boogie boarding.

if its memorial day weekend a it's crowded, don't try to fish while the beach is crowded

I grew up where I'm living now, in Atlantic Beach. I will fish when the fishing is good. The fishing sucks when the swimming conditions are best. Calm and hot does not make for good fishing, but makes for excellent swimming.
Like I said before, most people that know what they're doing don't surf fish in the summer because the fishing sucks and it's too annoying dealing with tourists that think they have any say about what happens in the ocean.

they have as much say as you, and they also outnumber you, and they are a bigger impact to the local economy, so... sour grapes for you?

also, the attacks at oak island were both hit and run attacks which are accidental, rare, and easy to take steps to avoid.

If I have to warn you several times, and you STILL swim into my line and get snagged then consider it a lesson learned. Next time you'll pay attention to your surroundings when you're in the ocean. I can't stop you from being an idiot.

Quote :
"Is this code for I DO WHAT I WANT!!!?"

No this is code for you come here for a week once a year, you come to my literal backyard, and you want to tell me how to live my life? I will be here next week when the beach is just a memory for you. I still have to look at the pile of cans you left on the beach after you left. I am still trying to live my day to day life while you're on vacation. I appreciate the tourists coming down here. We need them for the economy. But just like anyone who lives in an area that has a high tourist population we are all fully aware of the fact that many tourists come and visit and forget that people actually live here. They forget that after they leave life still is going on here.

So that is code for don't come here and tell me that what I'm doing, what I've been doing for 28 years and is completely legal, and tell me that what I am doing is wrong. I'm living my daily life, and I feel like eating fresh fish for dinner.
