http://www.wral.com/dot-50-mile-detour-could-be-better-than-fortify-delays/14707744/

Quote :
"Construction crews shifted lanes on I-40 West from Lake Wheeler Road to U.S. Highway 1 in Cary last week, and the same work is ongoing on I-40 East from Jones Franklin Road back to Lake Wheeler.

By mid-July, workers will complete final lane shifts from Lake Wheeler Road to the I-40/440 split in southeast Raleigh. The three-lane traffic pattern on both sides of the highway will be in place until late 2016...

Engineers estimate that the uptick in construction could add up to 30 minutes to a trip through the work zone in normal driving conditions. During peak travel times, delays could be longer.

Abbott said an alternate route around Raleigh – Interstate 540 to U.S. Highway 264 to Interstate 95 – could save truckers and out-of-town drivers time. The detour adds 50 miles, but Abbott said drivers going from Durham to Wilmington might still save time."

You know it's bad when a 50 mile detour is being suggested as an alternate route.

40E from RTP has been horrible the past couple of weeks. I generally avoid the morning traffic by coming in at 10am but even at 6-6:30 it's still a clusterfuck going home.

I leave RTP and use Glenwood, or get on 540. 40 is always a clusterfuck.

Public transportation is for poor people.

they should extend the 3 lane road from 312 to 306

that should help with it being clogged every day, even if there is no wreck

Those grooves in the pavement from around exit 293 to 300 are fucking horrendous. They should have fixed that shit by now. It can't be good for anyone's tires.

There is a HUGE bump in the east bound lane on 440 just before it meets 40. I will never understand why they do that dumb shit. It would take 30 seconds to put a smooth transition, but no they put a 3-4" bump that will destroy wheels and knock your car out of alignment if you hit it at highway speeds.

well if driving makes you feel superior to other people then power to you. theres a ton of worse things one could do to make themselves feel better/richer than others.

So the self-driving car is necessary.

I find it deeply troubling that the answer to stupid/lazy/dumb people is to pour hundreds of millions of dollars (perhaps billions) into technology that drives for you. This is rewarding bad behavior and does nothing to solve the problem of this county (and world ) being populated by idiots and everyone sinking to the lowest common denominator.

Where are all the protests and yelling saying that this money could go to better uses? Does no one realize that self driving cars would not be necessary if people were held accountable for being dumb? Making it hurt for being dumb and inconsiderate would go a long way in all aspects of society.

there's a fine line between innovation / convenience for the betterment of mankind and rewarding / compensating for laziness.

Right. All the automation designing has that fine line. That's the so-called SMART laziness.

Right.

If people didn't run into immovable objects and rear end each other at stop lights, then self driving cars wouldn't be on the radar.

Instead of making stupid hurt, we just spend billions of dollars to save a few lives from traffic collisions, collisions that are avoidable, FOR FREE, by just paying attention.

^We should just petition the government to raise the speed limit on I-40. 80 mph speed limit to Wilmington would make that drive considerably less boring and shorter. While I consider the chances of them raising the speed limit low, logically I don't see why they "can't" do it. I mean FFS, if I-485's speed limit is 70 mph then that desolate stretch of I-40 could certainly have a higher limit.

^ We should petition the government to use a giant sawzall to remove the area between Clayton and Castle Hayne. Then attatch Wilmington and W.B. back on.
