While I want their sports programs to suffer the longest period possible in the deepest pit of hell, I'd rather not the university itself to lose credibility outside of the AFAM and whatever other departments, because it does help North Carolina (as a state) on the whole. Plus, my girlfriend graduated there -- and it was from an actual good part of the program, not a pathetic Psychology or Communication degree (it was Dental school).

what a stupid fucking statement. their psychology program is #12 in the country (above several Ivy League programs) and #5 in developmental psychology, which is pretty important. Their journalism / communication program is also top 10.

I just had a conversation with a co-worker who's accepted a position at UNC...and I was like "Oh, UNC, it's a beautiful campus! The weather's great, you'll love it!" And I said this with completely positive feelings about UNC, I felt no dislike for it at all.

So I feel like my hatred for UNC (which was never that strong to begin with, obviously) has pretty much completely dissipated.

I hate UNC athletics, like really, really hate them. But, I completely respect the school as an academic institution and their campus is undeniably beautiful.

How can you respect them as an academic institution? Not only have they created fake departments for student athletes, they're one of the most notorious institutions to inflate grades. I mean their law/med schools are top notch. But undergrad? LOL

In my early 20's, I made a girl I met at a party cry simply because she was a UNC-CH fan. I mean, I laid into her. I dont remember exactly what I said, but it was really mean and immature. I have since grown up a little bit and don't let sports effect me like that anymore.

With that being said, I would weep tears of joy if banners came down.

Academic rankings also have to do with faculty, research involvement, potential towards Field Medals / Nobels / Pulitzers, etc., endowment, scholarships - the list goes on and depends on the metric. UNC is a great school academically and arguing that it's not because they inflate grades (look at Harvard and try that same argument) is just stupid.
