why not? it's hardly unprofessional. it's actually a pretty useful word. "you guys" and "you all" aren't any better and, imo, are worse.

If anyone has a better suggest for the 2nd person plural, I'd like to hear it.

I'll use it in speech internally. But not in an email.

yeah, sometimes i feel the need to make it apparent that i'm addressing more than one person, as just using "you" can be confusing to some people. but I still don't use "y'all", i usually end up revising the letter to make it apparent.

I don't know how professional/formal y'alls work emails are, but mine have always been rather casual and informal. Even in communicating with clients or vendors, it's all fairly casual for me.

And on the topic of saying/writing "y'all" - I feel like my first sentence above is a pretty good example of y'all being easier and better than any alternative. Saying "all of your work emails" or "you guys' work emails" or whatever other alternatives there just are clunky and ugly sounding to me.

"all" isn't technically correct, but it works for me.

I don't like repeating things. So I use all, y'all, and guys.

But "all" is my preference. It's definitely my go-to for starting a large email. But, otherwise, I just list people's actual names.

and nobody ever calls me except these people and telemarketers.

I don't really miss the phone one bit.

y'all is a word that conveys a tense that "standard english" doesn't account for properly.

had a lady in one of our Maryland Offices get offended that I began my email with "Hey Lauren," saying that somebody in my position should know better and it was unprofessional. Said she "preceived it as disrespect and apprised the executives here of such"

Our branch chiefs even use "Hey" or "Hey y'all" when addressing the division.

And speaking of professionalism, her emails are in 14pt. Comic Serif font.

Some people, man.

My boss did it ironically the other day in an email and there was a huge thread of jokes that ensued. I stopped saying y'all for the most part around Californians, but whenever I come back home it instinctively returns.

I can't bring myself to write:

Hello so-and-so,

It needs another comma:

Hello, so-and-so,

But that looks terrible. So I go:

Hello, so-and-so! or Good afternoon, so-and-so!

When an exclamation is too weird for the e-mail's contents, I use Dear so-and-so,

I realize I'm the only one left still rocking "Dear." And I don't shy away from "Sincerely" either. It's not intimate. It's just polite, and if we'd stuck with those things, we wouldn't have to think about this shit.
