A dark bath would probably get you close, but these tanks have a couple pounds of epsom salts per gallon, so you float high in the water. It would be impractical to put enough salt in a bath to float you and most tubs aren't anywhere near big enough to stretch out. They are also temperature controlled to about 93F and after being in there a little while you can't feel where the water begins or ends. With the lack of light and sound you lose spatial orientation and start drifting in the universe, miles away from everything. That's the idea at least.

You can start off with the door open and the light on, and work your way towards darkness at your leisure as you get more comfortable with it. If you think you would freak out then there's a good chance that you would greatly benefit going through it. It's been proven to be an effective treatment for anxiety and stress.

I really want to try this but never make the time. Supposedly if you do it enough you can train yourself to really just "let go" and can have psychedelic like experiences without drugs. Thanks Joe Rogan.

you shower before getting in (it's in the room with the tank) and they circulate the water through filters and UV treatment when they aren't in use... so you know, it's cleanish. You wear earplugs and shower again afterward, so it's probably about the same as getting in a hot tub.[Edited on June 3, 2015 at 3:56 PM. I floated for the first time a few weeks ago, and I am eager to go again. I went to the place in Wilmington. The first 85 minutes were just trying to relax and chill out and get comfortable. The humid warm air in the tank reminded me of when you're under the covers in bed and you're running out of fresh air, except the air actually is fresh. As I kept halfway falling asleep, I'd get a jolt of alertness feeling like I need fresh air, to breathe more deeply, and that would annoyingly bring me out of my calm state. I just had to convince myself I was mistaken and needed to chill out.5 minutes before my session was up, I became alert and started seeing blobs of blackness moving around in the darkness, and it felt a bit like in a lucid dream, but wide awake. The feeling of being in that state was really interesting. It wasn't the blobs moving around that made it compelling, but that fact that I felt like I was kind of in a lucid dream state. I was pissed that right as soon as I started enjoying the tank, the session was over.I wasn't having any other visuals, but I was definitely aware that I was in a very different kind of a state of mind than I had been the first part of the session, and it wasn't quite like anything else I've experienced. I think if I got better at letting go and getting into it, I could have some really powerful experiences (not recreationally, but more like meditatively)I can understand why people want to get high before they float, though.I'm going again in a couple weeks. It seems the consensus advice is do it a few times, at least 90 minutes per session.

thanks for chiming in, dm2006!I can see the potential for stuffy air to be a distraction. I hope my internal clock doesn't trip me up and start warning me when my hour is almost up (I always wake up 30 minutes before my alarm ) Maybe I can try to book a day/time when they won't be in a rush to get me out. I can see how it would be nice to have one of these at home so you don't wonder how much time is left, and to be able to sit in there as long as you desire.^I hope so[Edited on June 4, 2015 at 11:24 PM.
