I was 13 and I was told not to use it except in an emergency. Punishable by death.
5/24/2015 10:31:50 PM
Borrowed my parents to start, roughly 14 or so.Got my first, my moms old star-tac flip, when I was 15.Upgraded to a Nokia with a one week upgraded battery when i was 16 and started driving and working.

16, when I started driving, because my car was older than I was. Motorola "wedge" phone, 30 minutes a month plan, stayed in the car glovebox and only to be used if I had car trouble or wasn't going to be home by curfew. Ah, 1996.Didn't have one that I carried around with me until I was 19, sophomore year of college.
5/25/2015 1:47:15 AM
16 Nokia had 30 min a month "for emergencies only"Left it in the console of my jeep.First Time I actually used one for regular communication was closer to 21.

probably 17, so around 1996 or 1997.it was a bag phone, that you opened up and plugged into the cigarette lighter, and put the antenna with the magnetic base up on the roof. I think I had something like 15 minutes per month, hahaha. From there, I got one of those big Motorola brick-sized flip phones. I think I had that when I got to NCSU, but still, you basically didn't use a cell phone unless you really had to. Then I got a relatively smaller Nokia that you could put in your pocket pretty easily, and then a RAZR. Then I think I got this little tiny Zoolander phone. There might have been one or two more in the mix after that, then I got an iPhone 3G somewhere around '07 or '08, and have had iPhones ever since.[Edited on May 25, 2015 at 10:39 AM. Reason : ]

^ Pretty sure it was 1990 after getting back from a deployment...something like this:
5/25/2015 10:59:11 AM
are you sure a phone like that even existed in 1990? at least outside of a DARPA lab or something, haha.
5/25/2015 11:02:36 AM
damnit i meant to type 1999
5/25/2015 12:00:27 PM
I think this one maybe, before I upgraded to that Star-Tac
5/25/2015 12:02:49 PM

I miss my fucking pager.
5/25/2015 2:56:58 PM
I wish I had been able to use a pager. It would bring me that much close to The Wire!
5/25/2015 3:29:40 PM
14 or so? But it was only for emergencies, like finding drugs and calling home to explain that the library was hosting another all-night readathon.
5/25/2015 5:20:17 PM
15 I think, maybe late 14
5/25/2015 5:30:29 PM
Hey, I had an SCH-8500. That's the only phone I've ever broken (hoping that luck will continue, fingers crossed.)My first one was one of these bad boys, a Motorola MicroTAC - not this exact model but very close:
5/25/2015 5:54:03 PM
Oh I forgot about that one, my parents had two Motorola phones when I was in HS.
5/25/2015 7:43:37 PM

I believe it was 15? Hilarious when I think about it now. A few minutes of airtime and talk time (compared to today). A heavy nickel cadmium battery. The phone did come with a ton of accessories, which are unheard of today (dual battery desk charger, car charger, large and slim battery, case, etc...).Was awesome.
5/26/2015 8:01:58 AM
22 in 2005Was nice to get through undergrad without one. Could get away for hours without contact from anyone, so it was easy to study, do homework, write papers, etc. Can't imagine how ADD I would be now with a smartphone.
5/26/2015 9:19:48 AM
16 when I got my license. For emergency use only. I think I shared a 30 minute plan with my mom. lolI had this one too
5/26/2015 9:54:29 AM
i was around 15 or 16. It was the summer before i got my license. I'm almost positive this was my first phone circa 2001. ]
5/26/2015 9:54:50 AM
22 in 2007. Because my parents wouldn't pay for one for me, I didn't get one until I had some semblance of spending money. Also I think I was in a car accident and dealing with insurance with no phone was no fun.
5/26/2015 10:20:18 AM
I started out with the nokia on tracphone, then I moved to us cellular, then cingular, and finally to verizon.
5/26/2015 11:01:13 AM
22/23, right around my birthday in 2005.

5/26/2015 4:12:37 PM
2005ish when I finished college. Some standard flip phone that I don't think I actually used for the 2+ years I had it.
5/26/2015 8:52:56 PM
I bought my first cell phone when I was 36. every previous one was a hand me down.
5/26/2015 8:59:19 PM
probably around 17 in high school... something similar to this: had it through my first couple of years at NC State... I left it in my car about 90% of the time. My mom finally dropped me from her plan when i went over 100 minutes more than 2 months in a row.
5/26/2015 10:13:32 PM
Oh snap, I'm blowin' up
5/26/2015 10:20:59 PM
16/17 I was driving to school and also in charge of driving my brother.
5/26/2015 11:15:10 PM
18 signed up for Cingular in the brickyard. Got one of those Nokias that everyone else had.Up until 3 or 4 months ago my boss was still using this phone...
