^^Having to replace a $500-600 item is a big deal to most people.

Rather than just make a thread to say "fuck the police," why don't we look at this as another potential game changer. This could help define protections for citizen watchdogs. Because right now, if you're taking a video of a cop doing something, anything, and he/she takes it away and destroys it, it is just your word against them.

It will be interesting to see what happens here.

Are there any predefined laws preventing citizens from filming cops?

^Since I can post a Cop does XYZ thread 3-4 times a week, I'm now going to post a sensational headline, a link, and "FUCK THE POLICE". For all cop related threads.

Why do people use such weak statures when a phone is confiscated? Yes, it's true that it was a theft or destruction of property in this case. It might have also had some assault component to it. But these are far from the most important things.

Destruction of evidence is a big deal. That is the underlying motive for stopping recording and erasing video. Theft or confiscation makes it sound arbitrary. Going after someone's phone should be taken as an attempt to cover up a crime.

I used weak terminology because I wasn't sure what the charge could be.

You are allowed to film the police as long as you are not getting in the way of their investigation.

Nobody should act as appalled as the woman taking the video did unless she just saw the cop start beating the woman, or there was a big car crash or something. not cause the cop took somebodys phone and threw it on the ground like a toddler. it's like it was the worst thing the woman had ever seen in her life.

I usually give the police the benefit of the doubt but there is every reason to raise a stink in this case.

This is why there are programs that automatically stream audio/video to cloud servers as it's being taken. Granted, not a ton of people use them, but they exist for precisely these situations.

I currently backup all images/videos to my onedrive. And I video all encounters with cops because they like to kill little black boys like me.
