In his upcoming State of the Union speech, President Barack Obama will call for a $500 tax credit for married couples who each hold jobs, administration officials say. He'll also spell out ways to simplify the way taxpayers apply for education and child care credits, including increasing the top child care credit to $3,000.

The total cost for these new provisions and others -- including two free years of community college to qualified students -- is $235 billion, according to administration officials who spoke anonymously. Obama's proposals would need to be approved by both the Republican-led House and Senate.

Shrug, as if the House or Senate will even vote on this nonsense. They are too busy regulating vagina to worry about giving everyone cash.

The intent of the credit for married people with jobs is to help offset daycare. Need to read more details than the small snippets.

The raising of long term capital gains taxes to pay for it will have some interesting consequences as everyone pulls their gains out of the market prior to the rise

If the credit is to help with child care, how come having a child isn't a requirement to qualify?

As if a $500 handout is really going to help anyone. Here's $9.62 a week, this will help you with child care costs. While a daycare can run hundreds a week.

it's more an opening gambit for 2016 I assume. No chance it will pass. But Dems will be able to say "Rs would rather keep taxes low on their dividends and IRA above $Texas-million than give the middle class tax cuts"

If Obama wanted this to pass, he would have introduced it before the Dems lost control of Congress.

this is racist and homophobic.

http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2013/article/marriage-and-divorce-patterns-by-gender-race-and-educational-attainment.htm

this would benefit whites the most because they are most likely to be married.

and clearly homosexuals are not yet allowed the same rights to marriage as heterosexuals.

shame on you obama.

If Obama wanted change he would have shoved it down their throats when he had control of the House and Senate.

He's a politician, lots of talk, grand ideas, 0 action. At least he fixed health care bless his soul.

So a married couple with no children (or children above the daycare age) deserve a credit while single parents do not?
Married people already get a break as it is.

It's not crotch fruit that's the problem, it's how we view compensation as a country: http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2015/01/07/most-americans-dont-have-savings-to-pay-unexpected-bill/?utm_content=bufferca21d&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

This will end up with the mortgage interest deduction being taken away. I can feel it.

I'd love to see pretty much all credits and deductions eliminated.

I don't get the rush to spend money on people for child care. Many states already offer their own programs for qualifying families that make daycare REALLY cheap. For me, it is 1145/month, but qualifying families can get the same care for $300 or even less.

Now for a lot of families, they can take advantage of their employer's offer of a dependent care spending account, which lets you take up to 5000 of your paycheck, pretaxed, to go toward daycare. I realize some employers don't offer that, but I haven't seen the numbers.

$500/year really isn't going to do squat unless maybe it is combined with the credits already out there plus the state programs that people can take advantage of.
