I read this series several years ago and was fascinated by it... I read online that Jonah Nolan might be bringing it as a series to HBO. Man, that seems like a tough one to make. It would be awesome, but I have concerns about it for many of the reasons you mentioned. It's a little bit like Dune in terms of what you would have to tackle to make it correctly.

Have other people read this? it was quite intriguing when I read it for the first time... it was actually my first Azimov work I read, other than a few of his robot short stories. I feel like lots of other series derive inspiration from this... especially the "city planet" of Trantor, which Coruscant in star wars was probably based on.

I think they'd have a really hard time adapting it into a TV show just because the first few books jump forward through time so often.
