Surprised there isn't a thread on this already. Just got back from the theater and wow what a performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, he absolutely crushed this character. The whole movie was just uncomfortable but I couldn't stop watching. I don't think anyone else can play a creepy character any better, I definitely recommend checking this one out if that is your thing.

TWW Entertainment is solely a Marvel/DC hangout these days. Good movies get ignored, and then people complain about making a thread on it, but then it's all "OMG let's talk about this new Avengers trailer"

Gyllenhaal did well sure, but he lifted lots and loads of his demeanor during his sadistic moments in soliloquy from Bale's Patrick Bateman. I thought that it was pretty obvious, even straight down to his hairstyle and skeletal-like features of his face.[Edited on April 25, 2015 at 8:15 AM. Reason : y]

Patrick Bateman at least comes out of the gates in the opening scene telling you he's a psychopath, and he spends the entire movie demonstrating how he understands completely how the world works for normal people. Gyllenhaal reminded me much more of DeNiro's character in Taxi Driver; both of them love watching trainwrecks in motion yet have no understanding whatsoever of how functional people think or experience emotions.

his holier-than-thou diatribes targeted towards others combined with his descriptions of products and analysis of certain events throughout the movie are totally channeling Bateman. Maybe you view the movie more comparable to Taxi Driver than American Psycho, but as a character, I saw a lot of influence from Christian Bale such as the iconic crazy eyes that Bale was known for, to him delivering this up-beat, almost joyous tempo, while in the midst of a very sadistic harangue.

I always found it interesting that Christian Bale's inspiration for Bateman was Tom Cruise lolI like the movie. I wish Bill Paxton (the greatest actor of all time) got a bigger role.

^^I don't know where you're getting this crazy eyes bullshit. Gyllenhaal looks like that in every movie; just watch Prisoners and tell me he doesn't have that same look in his eyes constantly. It's not anywhere close to the face pinned back look that Bale held through much of American Psycho. gyllenhaal didn't write the script either, so it's not like he had anything to do with the content of his rants. While Bale was always ranting about some nonsense to distract people from what he was thinking, Gyllenhaal spoke in a very direct manner that was extremely focused to the task at hand. This reminded me much more of De Niro in Taxi Driver. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Gyllenhaal borrowed from either actor though; it's just the similarities in the style of movie that make you draw these comparisons.^Bill Paxton got the role he knew best - riding around in a van full of high tech stuff chasing something.
