The Hillsborough Street Revitalization thread gets a bit off track sometimes. So for all things NC State campus....a new thread.

A few of the major projects going on right now:Hillsborough St Hotel and SquareTalley Student Union and Pedestrian BridgeBridge will connect over tracks to Broughton Hall, which will be renovated and expandedReynolds Renovation Harrelson Demolition and ReplacementCurrently the plan is for a Sciences building, something to hide the ugle Cox/Dabney HallIndoor Athletics Practice BuildingCentennial Campus Hotel150 room Marriott, to break ground within the next 4 monthsThey have also been working alot on gateways to the university. You can see this around Pullen Oval, Western/Avent Ferry, Western/Varsity, Centennial Campus (espcially at Trailwood) and other places .

So seeing where they are putting the indoor practice facility, what if anything are they doing for to replace parking? Pave over the old outdoor one?
11/12/2014 10:58:22 AM
i think they will be marking spots in some of the unmarked lots to optimize parking and make up for the loss

Need to go ahead & take down Dabney/Cox when they demo Harrelson.

^^ If money was infinite I'd like to see them bulldoze DH Hill as well and build a more attractive library, but obviously that's not happening any time soon. The Pullen Rd extension is really an important project, I don't know what's taking them so long. Connectivity between the two campuses (and just access to Centennial Campus, in general) is really inconvenient right now, and it shouldn't be that hard for the city or university or whoever to slap down half a mile of pavement to connect Pullen with the Oval. I understand they want to redo the Western/Pullen interchange as well. When are they going to build the pedestrian tunnel under Western at Avent Ferry?
11/14/2014 3:18:06 AM
^^^ We've been told that article is incorrect about the trinity lot. The wolfpack club/ncsu does not own the land of the trinity lot and the owner isn't going to put up bumpers on the land just for parking 7 days of the year. I doubt they end up doing it for the faculty lot as well.[Edited on November 14, 2014 at 8:14 AM. Reason : ^]

^ I agree. I dont see them putting in bumpers for the Facutly/Staff lot anytime soon.^The only tenative plans for Pullen and Western was from that Western Blvd study they did back in 2007, but I havent heard anything since then. Any recent news on this?FYI here was the recommendations which came out of the survey
11/14/2014 9:00:32 AM
man leave harrleson the fuck alone (fatties complain the stairs are too steep?), at least you can generate interest by having a yearly roller derby in the center part
11/14/2014 9:04:13 PM
Yeah, the city doesn't seem to care much about improving Western Blvd. Hopefully if the Dix Park deal ever gets approved, that corridor will get more attention.
11/14/2014 11:30:24 PM
If they were to put down bumpers and do some selective tree removal in the faculty/staff lot, they could easily squeeze more parking out of it. That is very inefficiently utilized right now. *Selective tree removal, not clearcut it. The shade is one of the good points currently, but there are some very badly placed trees.

I had no idea that the Hunger Games-esque tower at Talley will be a pedestrian bridge. I guess that's neat. The Pullen corridor to Centennial... man what a pipe dream. It would be perfect but I just can't see it happening soon.

Here's a Reynolds renovation flythrough from a year or so ago to go along with the stuff dbhawley posted above. They're currently working on more fleshed-out designs for the interior/HOF (I've only seen drawings and don't have anything digital handy), but this gives a good idea of what they're hoping to do.At first I heard all the marble in the entrance lobby was being removed, then I heard they were keeping it, then I heard last week it was being removed again. So I really have no idea anymore.[Edited on November 15, 2014 at 3:21 PM. Reason : ?]

It's a bummer that they can't design the lower-level seating to be super-packed like Cameron, but the renderings look awesome.[Edited on November 15, 2014 at 5:47 PM. Reason : 3]
11/15/2014 5:47:01 PM
'Twould be nice if they kept the marble in the entrance lobby. But then again, I'm for silly things like keeping iconic buildings something close to original
11/23/2014 8:08:01 PM
Yeah I'm hoping they keep the entrance relatively close to the way it still is. Everything else looks great though.
11/24/2014 7:33:28 PM
I think they need an elevated train that goes from Wolf Creek all teh way downtown.
12/2/2014 1:26:38 PM
Last night the city council finally approved the Pullen/Hillsborough St extension.
4/22/2015 8:22:54 AM
This is from the study submitted to the City of Raleigh about Western Blvd a couple of years ago. I'm assuming it would look something like this.
4/22/2015 8:31:23 AM
Wow, can't believe this is actually happening. It's been necessary for way too long.
4/22/2015 9:32:03 AM
^ I agree. They also broke ground on the StateView Hotel on Centennial Campus.Large imagehttp://www.wmjordan.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Rendering-View-From-Parking-Lot.png

Lets see what updates there are:Talley Student Union- finally opened up graduation weekend. If you haven't been to visit, you should check it out if you're around campus. Offices are slowing moving in. Bookstore will be moving into it next Monday, 6/22.Reynolds - Coming along really nicely. I bought a pair of seats from it which are sitting nicely in my living room. The N&O did a photo story a couple of days ago, check it out if you havent yet. http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/nc-state/article23892619.htmlHillsborough Street - (I know it has its own thread for this). Stanhope, opening up this summer with CVS and IHOP moving into its retail level. Aloft Hotel opening Aug 20th. Jubala Coffee will be opening on the ground level of the hotel. A couple other apartment complexes in the former Two Guys Pizza, Dan Allen Intersection, and Ihop old location are underway.Centennial CampusStateView Hotel and Conference Center - Broke ground in April. Marriot Autograph Collection hotel with 164 rooms, 9,000 square feet of meeting space, an outdoor pool and a restaurant and bar. Slated to open Fall 2016.North Shore Apartments- This project was stopped back in 2006 after only 33 townhomes were constructed. It has picked back up, and the developer is hoping to build an additional 47 new townhomes, as well as 2 condo buildings with 32 units in each. They are also looking for finally develop a "town center" on campus near North Shore. They have 15 acres overlooking lake Raleigh set aside for this, and the university is supposedly in talks with developer(s) to see what this could look like. Not much info on this right now.Maybe I should consider starting a website blog with all these campus updates...[Edited on June 15, 2015 at 1:12 PM. Reason : ]

new Talley is incredible. wish it was there when I was at State. they have sushi, a Chipotle-esque taco/burrito place and a Jason's Deli among other things.
6/15/2015 4:33:30 PM
have only skimmed the thread, but aren't they thinking of building some rail people-mover...not that ole monorail idea, but some railway that has several cars that would hold like 4 or so people, which moves between centennial/main campuses
6/15/2015 8:54:22 PM
I'm putting the odds on that happening somewhere between the odds of me appearing on Meet The Press and the odds of jcg15, loudRyan, wlb420 or KyleAtState dunking a basketball on a regulation goal.[Edited on June 15, 2015 at 9:07 PM. Reason : VV I've seen the reports as well][Edited on June 15, 2015 at 9:10 PM. Reason : V I guess. I spent over 5 years at state and didn't really enjoy Talley]
6/15/2015 8:57:06 PM
friend of mine recently pointed out to me that there's a whole class of students who spent 4 yrs at state and didn't get to enjoy the old talley or the new talley. they only know that space as a construction site bankrolled with their fees. that really sucks.

6/15/2015 10:30:33 PM
West Virginia University has a similar but larger PRT system in place (cars hold around 20 people), been there since the 70s.I don't think this will ever happen, but who knows.

Isn't this just an EEP team?

Carmichael has had a bunch of renovations too. The majority of the bottom floor has been redone in the last 2 years, and this summer they're working on renovating the locker rooms. They've also closed the newly renovated areas on the 1st floor for the summer and potentially the fall semester too (guessing that's related to the locker rooms getting a complete overhaul).

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that the Board of Governors agreed to sell the Hillsborough Square site (which is currently Staff Parking) to a developer. It is a larger lot beside David's, and a smaller lot behind it.Today it was announced that it would be turned into a 5 story apartment building called Studio 1912.

seems like the micro-units will go fast with that location
7/7/2015 2:47:40 PM
Looks like we are exchanging a 80 acre site with SAS.Typically I am firmly against NC State selling its land. Land is one that onces its gone, you cant get it back. However this exchange deal seems like a no brainer. Basically we have $11 million go to shopping around. We decide what property we want, and SAS buys it for us.I didnt know about the policy regarding selling land, that only 25% would actually go back to the University. Wonder if this would have been the case with that forest they were trying to sell a while back.http://wraltechwire.com/sas-to-add-80-acres-worth-11-7m-to-cary-campus-in-exchange-with-n-c-state-/14874182/

I had a gym membership over June/July after moving back to Raleigh from Charlottesville. Basically the entire bottom floor of Carmichael (other than the back weight rooms) is getting a complete overhaul. State needs to sell how nice the recreation facilities are to potential students. Way better than anything I saw at UVA, or any of the other colleges I've visited.
9/4/2015 12:57:14 PM
I never understood why NCSU didn't try to get involved with the Dorthea Dix property when Raleigh was trying to acquire it from the state. The property is inbetween the main campus and centennial so NCSU ownership would of made perfect sense. I guess State has so much land it doesn't really matter but I am sure the university could of put it to good use. Hopefully the city ends up doing something pretty amazing with it that will complement the college.

Talley student center renovation is FINISHED. Grand opening is next weekend.
9/6/2015 6:25:04 PM
So that Carmichael renovation that I mentioned earlier is way more extensive than I thought it was. http://recreation.ncsu.edu/about-us/carmichael-addition/When I had a gym membership over the summer I was only told about the bottom floor of the old building being expanded and overhauled. Apparently over the next 5 years they're also planning to take that other building that is just random offices, classrooms, & old raquetball courts and totally overhaul it. Then they're connecting all the buildings into one massive complex.
9/8/2015 9:46:22 AM
went to the new library and the student center yesterday to check it out...first time i've been to either. really awesome stuff. plus all the hillsborough st revitalization going on makes me wish i was at state now.
9/8/2015 11:02:51 AM
Also they are gonna overhaul E.S.King village.
9/8/2015 11:20:39 AM
^ Hadn't heard about that, but that's needed. Huge area with a bunch of super old, run down apartments.
9/12/2015 10:47:08 AM
They still need to build the monorail
