"Whatever you do on a plane right now, do NOT sneeze and then say "Sorry, I just came from Africa." First, the flight attendant will publicly denounce you as an idiot. And then the Haz-Mat team shows up.

US Airways Flight 845 from Philadelphia to Punta Cana was purportedly met with a whole bunch ambulances and people in blue Gumby suits after the passenger made his joke, and promptly removed him from the plane, according to the video description. Fearing a whole plane full of potentially infected people, authorities kept everyone on board until they could verify that the comedian was never actually in Africa, where the virus originated.

Sneezing is not normally consider a symptom of Ebola, but right now government officials are taking no chances at stopping the spread of an extremely deadly virus, so they don't exactly have a sense of humor about it."

I wonder what kinds of costs are associated with a stunt like this, and how much of those costs this guy is going to have to pay back.

he shouldn't have to recoup a damn thing for the airline overreacting. Enterovirus and the flu SHOULD be a much bigger concern to Americans. But whatever.

it's not the airline's fault. my guess is that they've been ordered to report even the tiniest hint of Ebola ASAP.

if the stewardess ignores him, she puts her own ass on the line. and she can't be 100% sure he's lying.

this dude is just a fucking idiot.

I'll be honest, it's got me nervous. Not nervous about ebola, but about the overreaction. I'm coming to the US from West Africa in a month. I do NOT want to spend my vacation in a pointless quarantine.

Considering that none of the people he lived with have it, and only nurses who worked with his blood in an apparently incompetent hospital environment, maybe your "quotation marks" are inappropriate. If it weren't difficult to contract, Lagos would be on fire.

I guess my point is they had been going on and on about how no one in the US should be worried we have such great healthcare systems if a case pops up it will be isolated and wont spread etc etc. You have trained people caring for someone with a high mortality rate disease so one can only assume they would be extra careful and yet healthcare workers and doctors continue to get it.

Up until now they had been blaming the conditions and medical equipment not up to par over in Africa which we can all understand, but now its being transmitted in 1st world countries including the US which has to make you assume its a little easier to contract than what people have been saying.

If nothing else it shows us that the world is not as prepared as we thought to dealing with something that is supposedly difficult to contract so just imagine if this was something more easily trasmittable what kinda shit we would all be in.

I hope they dont ruin your vacation, but at the same time I have no problem with them putting in much tighter restictions to travelers from that part of the world until this thing is under control.

It seems that in this case we had a very nearly perfect storm of incompetence, starting with the guy who brought it over in the first place but moving quickly to an apparently less-than-stellar Texas hospital that initially turned away a symptomatic ebola patient. That's bizarre, and it's rare. My friends who just finished their service and went to the states have been getting rushed to the front of the line any time they see a doctor about anything. All they have to do is say "I just came from West Africa." How this guy got sent home passes all understanding, and I hope somebody got fired.

Then we have the first nurse, who is no doubt bright and well-intentioned, but she's also brand-spanking new. I think she just got her certification for this kind of work a couple of months ago, and the hospital provided no training on ebola.

And the king of incompetence here is the CDC, which somehow didn't land on this hospital with a quickness once the case was confirmed to take things in hand. I'm not saying quarantine the hospital and throw a plastic bubble over the thing, but maybe send a small team that actually knows how to care for an ebola patient.

A lot of stupid to go around, and blame with it. I doubt these mistakes will be repeated again. Witness the CDC reaction teams that now, finally, exist.

Now, onto the question of "easily transmitted." Here we have to get a little nitpicky. In one sense it is very easily transmitted, in that a symptomatic patient is positively teeming with the virus, to a greater extent than, say, HIV or flu. (This is according to what I'm hearing from the expat health workers here, including the CDC guy) You also need relatively little to get into your system in order to get sick. Together, those facts spell bad news for anyone who handles the fluids of sick people. If you're one of those people -- a nurse, say -- now is not the time to be making mistakes or letting your guard down.

It is, however, quite hard to transmit to regular Joes in the Western World. You're not going to have sex with (or probably even getting near) a violently ill person. You're not going to be handling dead bodies.

All fair points and hopefully that is all this is is just a failure of the system. It is just a bit worrisome that people would be so lax with something that could become such a huge problem.

Yeah except these nurses weren't properly trained. I'd bet on some hospital administrators getting fired for this.

People have been lax because of all the statements that ebola is too hard to spread and is no big dealâ„¢ in America...

Not saying we should panic (we should definitely NOT panic), but I don't feel that the leaders are giving an accurate depiction of ebola's danger, and i'm wondering if this doesn't factor into the apparent complacency that the texas hospital original demonstrated.

If this is true who the fuck thinks it is fine to allow someone with known contact to get on a god damn plane? Are all of those not monitored by the CDC or anyone really to make sure they dont do something ridiculously dumb like that?

That plane has already made several other flights without any more than a usual "vacuum the carpet" cleaning. Hundreds of potential infections. Far too many to track at this point.

youll find plenty of them in the soapbox blaming foxnews and republicans for mass hysteria

they want so badly for the government they worship to be correct in "its no big deal"

of course i want that too but id rather err on the side of caution

cant do anything for pitiful serfs like that

Shit has hit the fan in Texas. Massive FBI response collecting belongings from the homes of most hospital employees, ordering the deletion of social media accounts, etc. The hospital itself will likely be used exclusively as a quarantine from this point forward. Perhaps a half dozen other health workers are already symptomatic but awaiting positive test results before media is notified.

[Edited on October 15, 2014 at 1:40 PM. Reason : It sounds like they are afraid of hysteria and mass evacuations at this point.]
