It is not immediately clear to me how the guys were acting suspicious by standing on the corner, causing the off duty cop to go after them.

At some point, I wonder if someone will be able to say "i ran from the police because I had a legitimate fear that the police would murder me, or throw me in jail for not doing anything wrong"

Yeah, the 17 shots by a single off-duty cop performing a "pedestrian stop" has me curious as to the circumstances. How long did it take him to get off those 17 shots (16 of them hit, according to current news reports). Why is an off-duty cop doing a pedestrian stop anyway; he might be allowed to and it might not be all that unusual, but I just don't know.

^ thinking the same thing...

PB&J sandwiches do.

A little milk usually does the trick though

I think that the real issue here, in light of the mike brown shooting as well as other police brutality issues in the lime light recently, is trust between the police and the community.
The guy that was shot in this case very well may have been in the wrong...we don't know yet. But when the police have a history of not being transparent with the public, making up any excuse to absolve officers, bullying, provoking, disrespect to the public etc... the community can reasonably distrust the police when something like this happens.

Using the word "execute" in the title is sensationalist as hell after reading the article.

Quote :
"The six-year veteran of the St. Louis Police Department was off-duty but in uniform and working a side security job at the time of the shooting. Dotson told reporters at a briefing early Thursday that a group of three men fled after spotting him. The officer gave chase and "physical altercation" occurred between the officer and a suspect, who was described as aged 18 and black. Dotson said the suspect then "fired at least three rounds at the police officer" before he returned fire."

The if the account is true that he fired on the uniformed police first, then he's got to expect he's going to get shot back. I don't really see the outrage in that.

Quote :
"Alfred Adkins, the assistant police chief, told the Post the officer ended up in an struggle with the teen after the teen jumped out of the bushes during the chase. "

seems a bit sketchy. why would he jump out of the bushes to engage with a cop?

Boseman was a joke from Big Bang theory. Kinda surprised no one got it!

Back to topic: I am amused by the ole "he was holding a sandwich" gag. A sandwich? Really? If you are going to bullshit us, at least say cell phone, or something that may look like a device. Holy shit! I wonder if everyone is giving the "sandwich" person a hard time. After the interview, they are all saying "way to blow that one, you could have said anything, and you say sandwich?! Protest is over for you, go home!" We deserve better bullshit than that! I wonder if Subway was involved, or Jimmie Johns... "This protest is sponsored by Quiznos.. Hands up!" Sandwich... We deserve better than that.

Until body camera footage emerges(lol), it has to be assumed the gun was planted by police.

Protestors are blocking streets on the white side of town tonight. Helicopters are circling, the tanks are on their way.

[Edited on October 9, 2014 at 11:00 PM. Reason : Whites are racing past in cars shouting obscenities. People will die tonight.]

One of the parts that's really bothering me is that the officer was off-duty, working another job, in his police uniform, and using that uniform to perform actions in the guise of an on-duty policeman. I don't know what the rules are for police as far as what kind of "police authority" they have while off-duty, so maybe it's legit for this guy to perform arrests and other law-enforcement activities on behalf of the city police department while off-duty, but it seems like he shouldn't be able to do such things while working for another non-city entity, and he sure as fuck shouldn't be wearing his uniform during hours when he is employed by a non-city entity.

I really have to question if a normal rent-a-cop is allowed to do a "pedestrian stop" and what obligations a citizen has to comply with such a rent-a-cop. It seems to me that off-duty cop is deriving an implied authority through wearing a police uniform, an authority that he does not actually have at the time. Put more simply, if a rent-a-cop doesn't have the authority to chase down a random person on the street under normal circumstances, then this cop shouldn't be allowed to do the same while on-duty as a rent-a-cop, and his actions should not carry the usual protections afforded to an on-duty LEO. In other words, if you chase a dude down a street and he fires a gun at you, you should still be seen as the instigator, because you were chasing the fucker in the first place.

Quote :
"Gary Gibson, of Raleigh , North Carolina , is a criminal, according to the Raleigh Police Department. Why? Did he rob, rape, or murder someone? Did he, perhaps, burn someone's house down or abduct a child? No, Gary Gibson is a criminal because he refuses to hire an off-duty police officer to patrol his nightclub's parking lot, contrary to a city ordinance that 'requires any business with a capacity greater than 99 that offers 'amplified entertainment' to post a sworn officer over the parking area . . . from 8 p.m. until one hour past closing,' according to this story in the Raleigh News & Observer.

Gibson had, for some time, given in to what he terms a 'shakedown' by hiring an officer at $30 an hour. Finally he got fed up with the scam and told the off-duty cop to beat it. Shortly thereafter, he was charged with a misdemeanor.

Other businesses that have submitted to the shakedown have found themselves in trouble when their boys in blue failed to show up for work. To prevent this from happening in the future, they now pay anywhere from $100 to $400 a month as a 'scheduling fee' to have a police lieutenant schedule off-duty officers to patrol their parking lots. Police administrators say this kind of banana republic practice is just fine because 'the coordination takes time and effort.'

Gibson says clubs should decide their own security needs. "

Sweet article from Sept 12, 2004.

In the 10 years since that article has been published, the entire system for off-duty work for RPD has been completely overhauled.

But keep on trolling.

I am familiar with the Shaw neighborhood where the shooting happened. It is close to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. There is a large park that kind of separates the Tower Grove neighborhood, where the protest happened last night, from the Shaw area. The difference is the strip along Grand where the protest happened has many shops and restaurants, whereas Shaw has a bunch of gentrified housing.

Is this a setup for looting and burning again? Grand is not that close to the shooting area. Why Grand?
