marko maybe. I believe he was holding out until rotary phones came back in style

I have not had a phone for 3 years. Lots of advantages, and of course some disadvantages.
10/1/2014 5:32:02 PM
i can think of 1

My work requires me to have a phone.

The only disadvantage of having a phone is overcome by simply turning it off.

I went without a cell phone in Singapore for a few weeks and it kinda sucked. It made it really hard to get in touch with people and I got tired of missing out on cool shit so I picked one up. It was super cheap and easy and made me feel kinda dumb for waiting so long.
10/1/2014 7:20:08 PM
Yeah cell phones are even cheaper internationally. The plans mainly.

10/2/2014 3:37:49 PM
I have one, but i mainly use it as an alarm, I've gone quite some time without one at several periods in my adult life

I miss just having a pager.
10/2/2014 4:34:55 PM
my buddy used to have a pager where you could send him a text message... you had to call and talk to a human who typed it in. we used to call and send him the most ridiculously perverted text pages we could. it was crazy how straight-faced those operators were... it was an accomplishment when we got one to laugh.
10/2/2014 4:38:30 PM
I'd just use ALPHA-PAGE to send alphanumeric messages to pagers. Fuck calling somebody to transcribe it.

People forget or are more or less oblivious to how much time they spend staring at their cell phone these days. Even if you try to ignore it, it is a constant distraction.

Until last December, I went about two years without a phone I had google voice - was good enough.[Edited on October 4, 2014 at 5:25 AM. Reason : ]

^^ it isn't worth the trouble to NOT have one. I have a shitty older phone that I pay 15 bucks a month for. I get unlimited texting that I can use to organize events and do other important tasks like calling the bank or similar. There is little reason to not have a cheap phone for such things.
10/4/2014 6:00:51 AM
^ I organize events by asking people where it is going to be at and then I show up. If plans change then fuck it, I will go off and do something by myself.I must also point out that I have adapted well to this lifestyle as I am kind of a recluse anyways and so I don't have the need to communicate with people via phone. I write letters and send post cards to my mom and sister, but I have not spoken to them on the phone since last Christmas. When I was at State, I spent the majority of my Friday and Saturday evenings studying, and now I spend that allotted time either with my son or writing/recording songs. I thought I was a bad-ass when my Real Estate license was inactive in 2009 and I took voice-mail off my smartphone.

when BanjoMan's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, he writes a letter to his friends to pick him up
10/7/2014 10:23:58 PM
BanjoMan still has friends?I keed. Love you chupacabrah.
10/7/2014 11:09:31 PM
^^ yeah I don't have a car now obviously, cause I don't need one. However, when I did have a car it was a POS, and I only used it to get around town. For road trips always rented newer, reliable cars.
10/8/2014 2:43:24 AM
Do you have a job?
10/8/2014 10:48:45 AM
YES, of course. What does that imply? Are you asking if I am one of those people that uses the work phone as my own personal account? NO, not really. Well, the fact is that my life is adjusted now (being without a phone for so long) where people will just send me an email if they need to get in touch with me. And honestly, there is only one person in my life right now who actually has a reason to call me.[Edited on October 8, 2014 at 12:53 PM. Reason : d]
10/8/2014 12:52:32 PM
It just implies that I can't imagine having a job without a phone. I guess it's possible there are jobs where you'll never need to be contacted for something urgent, but I've never had one like that.
10/9/2014 10:38:46 AM
well, I dunno, I think that it just takes regularly checking email 3 times a day to be caught up on job stuff.
