I had it from time to time at my grandparents' house, like 20ish years ago

I seem to recall it wasn't bad then

still, there are many better cereals, in my humble view.

I loved Kix. I may or may not have sprinkled a little extra sugar on them.

I tried out and/or consistently ate just about every type of cereal as a kid. I consider myself an expert.

Do kids today still eat cereal, or have we finally figured out how unhealthy it is?

I always liked Kix. Then again, we were never allowed 'Kid's Cereal' in the house growing up.

Yeah, we weren't allowed to eat the sugary cereals or put sugar on our cereal. or pop-tarts. I enjoyed Kix. Is un-sugary cereal really that unhealthy compared to other things kids would eat for breakfast?

Kix has 20g of carbs per serving and almost no fiber or protein (and in most bowls you are probably eating more than one serving)

yeah, that's a pretty terrible breakfast for a kid, most cereals are

That was actually one of our "treat" cereals that we didn't get very often. I think we usually ate rice crispies, or wheat chex or total.

and i ate cereal morning, noon and night and was a very active kid that was always skinny.

what do you think kids should eat for breakfast?

rice crispies, wheat chex, and total are basically the same or slightly more unhealthy (although you get a tiny bit more fiber with wheat chex and total). rice crispies are terrible

the issue is not about being skinny or not, its about what constantly eating empty carbohydrates does to your metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and even hormones.

causes insulin and leptin resistance, which is a contributing factor to a lot of health problems later in life (including type-2 diabetes)

that's in addition to the more immediate behavior, learning, and energy problems

eggs or lean meat and a little fruit (usually a small banana or half of a big one) are what I feed my niece when we watch her

yeah, we usually had some meat or egg and fruit with the cereal in the morning. i dunno, maybe i was an exception, but i don't think my cereal-addiction as a kid had any negative effects on my body that i'm aware of. or maybe it takes a half-century to kick in.

^^^^ I ate more cereal and little debbie snack cakes as well as drank more sweet tea and sun drop than any kid I knew growing up. I turned out fine.

With that being said...my kids are going to eat a lot healthier than I did...but I will afford them a bowl of cereal in the morning if they so desire.

cereals were really the only unhealthy stuff we kept in the house when i was growing up. and my parents certainly weren't health nuts. but they just rarely bought coke, candy, chips, etc.

part of that, i think, is because i grew up on a farm and fresh vegetables and stuff were always around and always part of our meals.

but i'd eat the shit outta some cinnamon toast crunch, waffle crisp, apple jacks, count chocula.

We never had soda, chips, candy, etc. in our house. And I only got Count-Chocula and Lucky Charms and the like when I stayed at my cousin's or friends' houses. But I ate a ton of "healthier" cereal and cheese singles and drank a ton of juice, tea and milk.

Mountain Dew has orange juice in it. Therefore mountain dew is orange juice.

My kids are currently eating a cereal modeled after reese's cups and lucky charms, they eat ceral twice a week.

M - scrambled, bacon and toast
T-oatmeal or cereal (usually cereal)
W - cereal
Th - pancakes and waffles
F - cinammon toast and cheesetoast
S - Pancackes, bacon
Su - cinammon rolls, fruit, bacon

Of course, they also eat second breakfast, brunch, elevensies, lunch, snack, snack, and dinner. They get plenty of fruit and protein at some point in the day.

I was wrong before, Orange Juice is slightly healthier than Mountain Dew. A better comparison would have been Pepsi (41g of sugar in a 12oz) or Sprite (38g), you might as well give your kids a Pepsi or Sprite.
