How come no one has called this out as an attack on African Americans? Because that's exactly what this is.

All one has to do is provide 2 ratios - x out of 10 men perform violent domestic acts against women in the general public vs x out of 10 men in the NFL perform violent domestic acts against women. I haven't seen it, but I don't see how it is higher in the NFL than in the general population. I bet it's actually lower in the NFL.

I wish the media would just put this issue to bed. I don't even watch the NFL but I think what is going on is a bunch of BS

Why else would there be so much outrage? People are calling for the head of the league and for what? Not punishing someone enough for something they did in private? I mean the guy is obviously a horrible person, but there were no charges pressed.

These guys in the NFL are no different than anybody else. Should they conduct themselves with more decorum because they're in the public eye? Most definitely, but again, is the rate of domestic violence within the NFL higher than that of the general population? If the answer is no, then there's no other excuse for the attention all this is getting right now.

lol, wut?!

How is that the take-away you get from all of this?

I dunno man. Aside from domestic violence being terrible all together, I think there are several factors making it a big deal.
-Trained male athletes, sculpted to be as big/fast/bad as possible attacking those smaller than them just gives a terrible perception.
-Public figures representing teams and a league doing this type of stuff
-Letting this kind of thing slide promotes the idea of a rich and powerful person being able to sidestep normal social norms and the law

should I keep going?

this is kinda insane

so if a murder is committed in private it doesn't deserve proper punishment?

lots of professional jobs will suspend you with a felony charge and fire you with a conviction, this also applies to various misdemeanor charges too. even more will fire you if you bring them bad press for whatever the reason.

Stumbled across this, from one perspective it looks like the NFL is getting raked over the coals by the media despite having lower criminal trends than society. Then again, it may not be totally accurate since all crimes may not be reported to the NFL and bean counters. Either way, I think the NFL has a media problem, not a player problem (people do stupid shit, and the NFL players are doing stupid less than or equal to national average)

I have no idea what the domestic violence rates among NFL players vs general population are. But it's pretty obvious why this get so much attention. A video of a star player violently beating his girlfriend was made public. A week or so later, arguably the best player in the league is in trouble for child abuse. That's how the news works....when famous people do bad things it gets a ton of attention. That's true for everything, not just football players.

That is an interesting graphic. One thing about the NFL though...it's by far and way the most popular sport in America. Its regular season weekly ratings beat out championship ratings of other sports. So maybe it shouldn't be unexpected that it's more newsworthy for the NFL. And another big part of the outrage over these acts is directed at the league's handling of the acts. Yes, there's legitimate outrage at the players (Rice, Hardy, AP), but with Rice especially, a great deal of the public outcry was also over his paltry league punishment.

I can't win. In the soapbox, I'm called a racist for the simple fact that I tend to vote Republican and lean toward conservative principles.

When I come out with a different opinion than everybody else regarding this whole NFL thing, I'm called an idiot.

I would actually somewhat agree that domestic violence issues shouldn't necessarily be fireable offenses, assuming you're actually getting help and realize there's a problem. Those types of problems are "fixable."

I think the problem comes in when the perception is that the NFL would rather sweep the problem under the rug, whether it continues or not, just so the players can keep playing and making $$$, and the fact that this perception of the NFL exists isn't unwarranted.

My taking a strong stance, even if it would be an extreme stance for the run of the mill employer, they're sending the message that they're not just trying to sweep it under a rug, that they want the player and their family to get help.

So i'd argue rjrumfel is right in the sense that, once a problem has been identified, it's no one's business how it's handled. But he's wrong in the sense that the NFL has other factors to consider, for their own interests primarily, but secondarily to help push a positive message that abuse isn't okay.

Hope Solo was involved in a domestic abuse altercation, and is still awaiting trial. She currently still plays on her pro soccer team, as well as the U.S. national team.

Sure its a double standard but statistically speaking it's really not significant. The important thing is that gender shouldn't matter at all. Don't hit people because you can't control your shitty emotions in your empty relationship. If you can't do that then get help.

The NFL is sooooo influential that people misguidedly want the league to be some sort of beacon of social justice. They are ultimately a business and don't have any responsibility to be a pioneer on these issues. Yeah, they have a strong platform, but I think there's too much scrutiny placed on the league for this.

Goodell has been a whipping boy for suspensions and rule changes so naturally he's getting it hard right now. The Ray Rice 2-game suspension, obviously, is something no one can explain.

^mostly agree. For the most part, the DV issue is a cultural and societal issue that is far worse outside of professional sports. It's a problem that has to be solved by individuals, families, and society as that is where it originates for most of DV abusers. It is not up to the NFL to take the lead or be the solution to DV, even within its own ranks. That is not the purpose, or within the realm of a true possibility for the NFL. That's not to say that the NFL cannot help, that it cannot take steps and push the agenda along - it can in huge ways. Simply put, the NFL, or any other singular similar entity cannot solve society's problems.

And yes in one sense the NFL isn't responsible for being a pioneer for DV, but in others it is. It is the social contract that binds the NFL to do something (if you believe in such a philosophy - which obviously most people do, but to an extreme). It falls upon the NFL to play a major role because it can, because it is a major face in society, because it has the means, because its individuals are in the spotlight, and because any organization that describes itself as professional will work to minimize unprofessional acts by its members, especially public figures - mostly because of financial reasons, but also because of the social contract. If you can do something, you should do something.
