The bolded points are fine advice, but when you actually read the text it gets a little weird. Teach your children to hate themselves!

Quote :
"After this conversation about Native American oppression, my daughter said this: “I wish I wasn’t White. Then I wouldn’t have to feel guilty about everything we’ve done.”

I felt what she was saying – and I suddenly understood why so many of my White friends were scared of having these conversations with their children."

So instead of saying something like "No baby, don't be ashamed of how you were born, just try to change things in the future" she's basically thinking "Yeah I wish we weren't white too"

"“Mom, did you know that before the first Thanksgiving, the Native Americans and the Colonists hated each other?”

“Well, I think they feared each other, but that often grows into hate. Yeah.”

She was silent then and I realized that she thought what many of us thought at that age: that Thanksgiving was the Disney-style happy ending to the founding of America. Everyone came together, shared food, and we all lived happily ever after. The end.

As a Historian and social justice advocate, that image didn’t sit well with me.

“Do you know what happened after the first Thanksgiving?”

“No, what?”

“Everyone went back to fearing each other and fighting. Since the colonists had guns and new diseases and other weapons, they used those to kill and enslave the Native Americans and take their land.”

I looked up and saw that my daughter was crying.

“We killed them all?”

“No, baby, not all of them. But we killed a lot of them. And we forced the ones we didn’t kill off their land and made them live on reservations. And we took a lot of their children to try to force them to assimilate to our culture and abandon their own.”"

We?

I honestly can't say how I, personally, have benefited from institutionalized racism. My parents grew up poor. I grew up poor. They had no help from anyone but themselves. That is why I think #4 is a load of horse doody.

But I'm sure moron can come in and tell me exactly how I've benefited from institutionalized racism, even though he doesn't know me or my situation or how I grew up. No, I don't get funny looks when I walk into stores with a hoody on. I probably can catch a taxi a lot easier. But for the most part, I don't think I've gotten to my mediocre middle class existence based on white privilege.

even poor white folks benefit from "the system". in this case, it's access to blue collar jobs through family and other networks

^^ if i knew you personally, i could probably point out ways you've benefited.

But ^ has a good "general" explanation. Also, your individual experience is irrelevant to a discussion of societal trends and policy, when the data (as you know...) is pretty clear on this issue.

^^^ We, as in Americans (or the people that would become them, in that case). We defeated the Germans in WWII, we put the first man on the moon, we broke the back of the british hegemony, and we brutally subjugated blacks as slaves and as non-slaves until a few decades ago.

LOL, i can't tell if you're joking, but if not, if a person feels guilt after hearing the truth of our past, that's an internal emotion; it's a reasonable response, isn't it? That's not "teaching someone to hate themselves." This parent didn't say "you should be ashamed of yourself for being white", it appears they just accurately described reality. There's nothing inherently wrong with feeling the emotion of guilt.

you people and your white guilt need to get over it. did you own a slave? did you kill millions of natives? oh, what's that? you weren't alive when that happened? then move the fuck on. want to feel guilty about something? worry about drone strikes, enabling the police state, and anti vaccers.

Just about every nation founded on this planet has something in it's history that could make children feel guilty about something. Yes the US was horrible to Native Americans and blacks, but as far as the list of atrocities go the US doesn't even make the top 25.

And... What's your point? We're Americans, we can't do anything about Other people in other counties.

I'm sure there are Germans that feel guilty about the holocaust, or South Africans guilty about apartheid, or Israelis guilty about the Palestinians, etc., it's up to those people to deal with their problems, just like it's up to Americans to deal with our own problems.

the biggest problem with moron's dumb ass is he only cares about making whites feel bad about blacks

forget any other group

it turns any righteousness he might have into simple political agenda

...and then he gets picked on in every thread and cant figure out why

warning: WORDS

posted by a good friend of mine today on FB:

Quote :
"Something happened yesterday morning that really bothered me.
I woke up this morning and it's still bothering me.
Walking to work from BART, I crossed 24th at Valencia and headed toward 23rd. There's an elementary school on that block. I found myself walking behind a mother whose young child was walking several paces behind her. The mom wasn't paying attention to the little girl at all. The girl saw something that caught her eye on the sidewalk and stopped to go back to take a closer look. The mom kept walking, unaware that her child was falling even farther behind. The girl stopped to pick up a bottle cap from the edge of the sidewalk, rolled it in her fingers and then started walking again.
It was at this point that the mother turned around. She seemed less concerned about her child not being nearby than she was about me. She looked me in the face. I smiled. She reached out her arm and pulled her child close to her. I walked past them.
And then I wondered: did she pull her child close because she'd been wandering on Valencia Street, or did she pull her child close because there was a 6'3" black man there?
So I turned around to see if in the seconds since I walked past if she'd continued to hold her child close.
She hadn't.
The girl had drifted behind again and when I turned to look, the mom was looking directly at me, again oblivious to what her kid was doing.
Apparently I was the most dangerous thing on Valencia. Not that her kid might walk out into the street, or pick up something from the ground, or trip on broken glass, or be snatched away by someone who could easily tell she wasn't paying attention. No.
Me.
The guy who actually watched to make sure her kid didn't do anything to harm herself while the mom was neglectfully unaware. (Valencia is a busy street through San Francisco's Mission District for you non-locals.)
Remember, kids! See a black man? Grab your child out of panic/fear/habit/conditioning even if he's wearing headphones, has one hand occupied with carrying his lunch to work, is wearing a nice golf shirt, and is smiling at you in a non-threatening manner. Once the black man has passed, immediately release your child's hand, fail to correct her behavior for having strayed too far from mommy, and immediately go back to ignoring her ... because since the black man has passed you, the threat of harm to you and your child has also immediately passed.
It was a shitty way to start the day. And when I walked into the office, I thought: "how lucky are my coworkers (all very lovely ladies) that this is something that they will *never* have to deal with when they walk to work?"
But it's sticking with me."

1) you have a connection to these people (they're your countrymen )
2) guilt is a personal choice, not everyone responds by feeling guilt. I, nor you, nor anyone, can control whether someone feels guilt. If you read about the legacy of slavery, you might feel guilt, or you might not, this is up to the individual. The intention of pointing the effects of slavery out aren't to make people feel guilty, it's to make people want to help fix the still-lingering problems.

^^ umm... the whole basis of TSB thread is that many of these problems don't require any person (white or otherwise) to be racist, this is the opposite of what you're attempting to describe.

If you're feeling guilty, that just means you, at least subconsciously, recognize how bad the problem really is. Don't fight it, embrace it and become part of the solution.

The point is that Americans shouldn't hate their own country and think that it's morally inferior to others, because for the most part it's not. Learning from history is indeed important and helps to prevent future atrocities. However if someone feels guilty about what happened 100+ years ago I'm just gonna laugh at them.
