I think lightning hit something around here and there was a power surge

or somethin' like that

I have a PVR (for recording games, mainly) and my computer won't recognize that it's hooked in anymore

also I use a USB ethernet adapter for my Wii, which stopped working as well after that

does that mean the devices themselves (the PVR and the adapter) are probably shot, or is there some kind of fix that you guys can suggest? =3

Do you have something like a USB mouse you can plug into each USB port to see if it works in any of them? Or basically anything USB that wasn't plugged in during the power surge? That would rule out if the devices aren't working or if more likely, the ports aren't working.

If the USB ports are bad the controller probably got fried, and you're relatively lucky the motherboard wasn't damaged. To replace it, you need a lil bit of onion.

the mouse seems to work fine in the ports

well, one of them it didn't work for a minute but then it worked later

should I order another ethernet thingy, and/or look into getting the PVR thing repaired?

I had plugged in my USB mouse to the ports in the back of my desktop computer, and it seemed it only worked with the top 2, and the bottom 4 it didn't register

also my damn wireless signal seems to really suck despite the fact that the router I have is supposed to be really good

ok, so... maybe it's not USB?

my Xbox 360 (which I have to use an ethernet cable for) won't connect to the internet either

any advice/suggestions/ideas?

it's not a big deal since I don't use it online much, I'm just trying to figure out where the problem is and if anything is fixable

ok let me reiterate with a short Cliff's:

Stuff that's not working correctly:

1) PVR (for recording TV and games): USB doesn't seem to recognize that it's plugged in. the same USB support will work with the mouse, however (which is obviously lower powered, idk if that has to do with it)
2) on Desktop PC, it seems that 4 of the 6 USB ports on the back don't work at all (only tested with the mouse, though)
3) Xbox 360 will no longer connect to the internet. it's one that has to be wired with an ethernet cable - have tried 3 different cables, but it still won't recognize that it's plugged in

I can't figure out any central thing that's wrong..

like the PVR works (in that it'll work as a passthrough and still show what's on the screen), but won't get far enough to record

Xbox works, just won't connect to internet

Desktop PC works fine otherwise

If that does not work format your hard drive and re-install windows XP.

I see this a lot. USB and Ethernet have buffering to prevent damage to the device as a whole in the event of a power surge or short. Its similar to a fuse really, once its burnt the port (or in some cases root hub) in question will no longer work. I've seen where literally everything in someone's house that had an Ethernet port got fried.

For the computer the easiest solution is to just not use the affected ports. If you need more you can install a cheap USB PCIe card or use a hub. For the 360 and PVR I might be able to replace the buffering resistors and fix them, but I'd have to take a look in person.
