On a scale from 1-10.I was kinda feeling a pink/coral shirt a bit more than this blue checkered...I'll try and post an update. The jacket is a lighter shade of blue if you can't tell...(but not UNC blue :sick

I'm not much of a fashion guy by any means so you prob shouldn't listen to me but I feel like that tie with that shirt looks like too much is going on. Either a shirt without a pattern or a simpler tie. Also, fix your collar!

~trendy~looks fine if you don't mind being flashy (that jacket doesn't fit, but I assume you will be getting it tailored)[Edited on July 21, 2014 at 10:29 AM. Reason : ^contrasting patterns are in fashion right now]
7/21/2014 10:28:42 AM
too busy. my general rule of thumb is that the shirt or the tie can have a pattern, not both.
7/21/2014 10:35:57 AM
that was true a few years ago
7/21/2014 10:39:13 AM
^i thought you were saying that true fashion never goes out of style and you wear the same clothes your dad wore in college?
7/21/2014 10:43:26 AM
this is trendy fashion, it will be out of style in a couple more years (and its cyclical, flashy suits with contrasting patterns were trendy a few decades ago and will be again in a few decades after they are out of fashion now)some styles are classic and don't change, synapse could easily wear a classic style today that his father would have looked fine in 20-30 years ago. this just doesn't happen to be a classic style, its more trendy and contemporary.this shit aint rocket science.
7/21/2014 10:50:29 AM
I know, i just find it amusing to hear men discuss it like it's important.
7/21/2014 10:55:22 AM
i say 8 or 9contrasting patterns are in, but with two very safe patterns.
7/21/2014 11:19:43 AM
"important" is debatable depending on where you live/work and how you define important. But regardless, over the years I have grown to enjoy dressing nicely, and as someone who is pretty aesthetically driven (enjoying architecture, art, furniture design, etc.) I also enjoy messing with color, pattern, texture, etc. in clothes. #noshameOn the OP, it looks good overall (8?) but I'm not a huge fan of the specific pattern on the tie itself but it also may be the picture. I think it is the 3rd color (the two-tone stripe) that I'm not digging 100% in this shot. The color combination of it all is good though overall.Regarding trendy/flashy, I honestly don't think it is very flashy at all. I think the bright tie is the only thing that really leans this outfit that way. Replace that tie with a solid color in a more neutral or monochromatic color and it's not really that trendy or flashy. But that's also the joy of having multiple pieces to work with in formal wear. Buy classic suiting and shoes use the accessories to add trendy touches if you want.PS: in terms of shirt and tie patterns, you can fairly safely break the rule when very simple or classic patterns are involved. IE a simple blue and white check is a pretty safe "pattern" so pairing it with a simple striped tie is pretty safe given a few constraints.[Edited on July 21, 2014 at 11:37 AM. Reason : ]

Looks great. I say 10.
7/21/2014 11:34:28 AM
4. fix your tie. the skinny part goes behind the fat part
7/21/2014 11:51:39 AM
i feel like i have that exact tie from circa 2004 hanging with about 20 others i never intend to wear again. the rest of it looks fine.
7/21/2014 11:51:40 AM
Yeah that's what I was trying to communicate ^. The intent with the color of the tie works (the orangeish color with the blues) but something about the overall look of that specific tie seems like something I would have worn 5-10 years ago.

How do you all feel about mixing in a belt like this? (with khakis)I think it's too casual to be worn with a jacket...http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/zqEAAOxycgVTih3A/$_57.JPG?rt=nc]
7/21/2014 12:11:35 PM
that belt shouldn't be worn with that outfit. is that what you were asking?in general though, this is the south and you are allowed to wear that belt. if in other parts of the country though, don't wear that belt.and yes, you can wear that belt with a jacket in the right situation. think summer beach wedding: navy linen jacket, khakis, white shirt, simple tie, and a nautical/fishing themed embroidered belt. (a similar belt that would be more versatile would be a 2-color prep-school style canvas belt)[Edited on July 21, 2014 at 12:32 PM. Reason : .]
7/21/2014 12:24:55 PM
be prepared to back that belt up with general off-shore fishing knowledge.
7/21/2014 2:08:17 PM
jacket and tie match, but the shirt doesn't work.
7/21/2014 2:25:06 PM
Is that belt reversible? If so, reverse it when you are outside of the state
7/21/2014 2:25:21 PM
To me, wearing that belt with a jacket would look extremely douchey. But that's just me.
7/21/2014 7:55:56 PM
Not digging the belt
7/21/2014 8:09:42 PM
You would get laughed out of Europe with that jacket/shirt/tie combo!
7/21/2014 8:36:52 PM
OK?
7/21/2014 8:39:32 PM
Avoid button down collars with a tie - go for a nice spread collar and learn how to tie a windsorLooks like jacket isn't sized correctly. I like the tie but it just doesn't fit the check, it really needs a solid underneath. At minimum a different color, probably one that matches the blue in the tie. Some guys can pull of contrasting patterns now but it helps to be slim. If you're going to go contrasting patters be sure that your jacket and shirt are tailored.Initially a 6. The belt is a -1

He doesn't have too many spread collars (if any at all) so I think he's going button as a result.Hopefully he gets the memo about the belt.
7/22/2014 10:09:48 PM
There's really nothing wrong with wearing button down shirts with ties, it's certainly less formal than a spread collar shirt though:
7/22/2014 11:13:52 PM
The colors match, but can't rate on a 1-10 scale unless I know where it's going to be worn. At a funeral? A Bobcats retro jersey night? The office? A restaurant for dinner?
7/23/2014 2:02:11 AM
oh wait i fucked it up

"He"

7/23/2014 8:16:24 AM
no, wrong
7/23/2014 8:31:41 AM
oh god. it's time for a dtr rant on european styles to fit some story he's concocted.
7/23/2014 8:39:36 AM
button collars are actually European style from colleges and universities that came over to the US via Ivy League schools. All of your XL Chaps Ralph Lauren outlet shirts are called "Oxford" shirts.[Edited on July 23, 2014 at 8:46 AM. Reason : so your collar stays still while playing polo]
7/23/2014 8:41:03 AM
Button down collars are okay. Non-button are definitely more prevalent these days...but buttons are still okay. The problem is when the shirt doesn't fit...like in the OP's picture. The shirt neck is too big, so when everything is buttoned down, it wrinkles and looks cheap. And mixing patterns with ties and shirts is okay as well. The OP's combo passes...but the tie would probably fit better if it was solid.Overall...not a bad outfit...but he's not winning any awards. And don't wear that fucking belt unless this is a fraternity formal.
7/23/2014 8:54:34 AM
yeah I have no problems with button down collars and ties or jackets. To me it is not quite as formal which is totally fine for certain events. I have seen it done plenty of times and looked nice.
