I was flipping through a novelization of the original Star Wars (IV) and noticed that they spelle R2D2 as "aretoo detoo", or something like that. I found that very odd.

It's Artoo-Detoo, and C-3PO is See-Threepio. I've read that the phonetic spellings were in the script to make sure the actors said the names right.

I've also read that Obi-Wan Kenobi (in the original trilogy, and this is before the prequels came out) is really OB1 Kenobi, and that OB1 is his clone designation.
