With my thoughts, I welcome you. With my words, I welcome you. With my heart I welcome you. See, I have nothing up my sleeve.

I remember singing this in elementary school in music class but I definitely didn't remember what the words actually meant. Learn something new every day. :V

I remember some group came to my elementary school and sang that song as part of a play or skit or variety show or something along those lines. As soon as I saw the thread title, I sang the next line in my head.

WHY DO I KNOW THIS
6/13/2014 3:05:29 PM
Cause we all had the troop come to our elementaries and teach us the funga alafia song! I don't know if I remember the random dance they taught us, but I definitely have one that I do.The fact that I don't shout out funga alafia in line at the store is my proof of impulse control. So hard.

The Youtube videos I've watched of it are definitely nothing like the guy who came to my school.I remember it being a very loud/aggressive chant, not a welcome song. And we said fungi, not funga. And it was a single light-skinned dude, not an African troop. I thought it was an American Indian thing, too, not a West African thing.

We just got Ronald McDonald at our school. He didn't sing and mostly talked about stranger danger and safety. Why were strangers such a huge problem in the late 80s-early 90s?

One day during lunch, this guy runs into the cafeteria wearing a chicken suit and proceeds to dance like a mad man to "All Shook Up" by Elvis for about 5 minutes while we all stare. His crowing was so loud it made some kids cry. He then just disappears and no one says anything.I'll never forget that day.

Try shouting it out loud while you do a tribal dance mockery. It may jog your memory.

One of my most vivid elementary school memories.
