PFC MATTHEW MICHAEL MARTINEK, STAFF SGT. KURT ROBERT CURTISS, SSG CLAYTON BOWEN, PFC MORRIS WALKER, SSG MICHAEL MURPHREY, 2LT DARRYN ANDREWS, WERE ALL KIA FROM OUR UNIT WHO DIED LOOKING FOR BERGDAHL. The Taliban knew that we were looking for him in high numbers and our movements were predictable. There is also no way to know what he told the Taliban: Our movements, locations, tactics, weak points on vehicles and other things for the enemy to exploit are just a few possibilities. The Government knows full well that he deserted. It looks bad and is a good propaganda piece for the Taliban. They refuse to acknowledge it. Hell they even promoted him to Sergeant which makes me sick. I feel for his family who only want their son/brother back. They don’t know the truth, or refuse to acknowledge it as well. What he did affected his family and his whole town back home, who don’t know the truth. EITHER WAY WHAT MATTERS IS THAT GOOD MEN DIED BECAUSE OF HIM. He has been lying on all those Taliban videos about everything since his “capture”. If he ever returns, he should be tried under the UCMJ for being a deserter and judged for what he did. Bergdahl is not a hero, he is not a soldier or an Infantryman. He failed his brothers. Now, sons and daughters are growing up without their fathers who died for him and he will have to face that truth someday."

fuck everyone who says we shouldnt be happy that a US Soldier was returned from the taliban back to his home country (dont argue with me about the fact that he is in Germany right now, just let the semantics slide on that)

whether or not he is a traitor is to be determined later, but no man left behind means no man left behind, its one of the only comforts that US Soldiers have while deployed, that if something happens to me the entire military will do whatever it takes to make sure that you are alive and that you will return home; even if that man has to answer for why he was missing in the first place...there are courts for that

and to talk about BS missions, jeebus, we once had to roll out so some General could...and i remember it specifically, "see where Alexander the Great fought", so although men died looking for him, they died at the time looking for a POW; a real mission that even if at the time I thought he was a piece of shit, I would have had no problem with personally

my main point is everyone comes home, whether or not you face trial afterwards, you still come home, men died looking for him and others are mad about that (justified if he was a piece of shit) but still a better mission than trying to win the hearts and minds of the afgans, or any other mission, so all the bashing about celebrating when a POW comes home is kinda ticking me off.

**side note, I knew SSG Bales personally, spoke with him often (the guy who wandered off and killed a bunch of civilians) and I think he is a POS, but if his ass was held by the taliban, i would have no problem going out and trying to find him

A family member of mine lead a mission to find the guy and he told us that he went awol. Left his station in only his pt clothes and boots and wondered into the desert where of course he would get caught. From the way he explained it the guy was looking to die and that simply didn't happen.
