http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/28/us/mexico-marine/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Quote :
"A U.S. Marine and Afghanistan war veteran held in a Mexico prison for nearly two months will make appearance in court Wednesday, his mother told CNN's "New Day."

.....

With all his possessions in his truck, Tahmooressi drove across the border. When he realized his mistake, his mother said, he dialed 911 and asked the operator to help him. No help came, Jill Tahmooressi said. Her son first encountered Mexican customs agents, she said, and he believed they understood that he'd made an innocent error. "

I'm no expert on the US/Mexico border but how does one "accidently" drive into Mexico without realizing it...

I don't think he was doing anything nefarious with his guns. I do think though that it is way more likely he decided to make a side trip into Mexico during his trip across the US, only to get caught with two undeclared weapons.

Once you get in line, there is no way to turn around. At least that was how it was when I drove into canada.
So, as soon as you cross the border, you turn around, but then you have to go through customs again.

It was late at night, he took a wrong turn and was in the wrong lane, and when he realized what was going on, he couldn't turn around...besides it would be like trying to turn around in a DUI checkpoint - there's a good chance they'll come after you.

He stated he had the guns, and they were legally obtained, yet he's being detained in one of the worst Mexican prisons.

I don't see how you get that far off course...

If he is taking I-10 from FL to CA, unless he screwed up going through El Paso, there is a solid 5+ mile gap between any I-10 exit and the border.

Even the I-8 branch to San Diego as a pretty solid buffer from the freeway to the border.
