My boyfriend is looking for a GTR but the one in ebay with 50,000 miles are listed at around $50,000... Anyone knows if this sounds right at all? So confused...

A nissan about to be out of warranty? No thanks. ref:http://www.nissanusa.com/content/dam/nissan/pdf/techpubs/gt-r/2013/2013-gtr-warranty-booklet.pdf[Edited on May 6, 2014 at 7:28 PM. Reason : ,]

I'd be scared of that car with no warranty and that mileage.[Edited on May 6, 2014 at 8:47 PM. Reason : .]
5/6/2014 8:47:27 PM
Since one with 0 miles is $100k, and one with 50k miles is $50k, the relationship is obvious... find one which has 90k miles, and it will be $10k... or one with 100k miles, it will be for $0
5/6/2014 8:57:36 PM
Heres a better way of looking at it. If you cant afford to buy a good one, maybe you can't really afford the car. That's why I dont drive a C6 Z06 now.

Good point bj
5/6/2014 9:19:17 PM
you could buy like.. 4 chevy cobalts
5/6/2014 9:21:20 PM
If you couldn't afford to buy it new, you probably should be looking to buy a used one that's nearly out of warranty and will demand the premium maintenance upkeep. It's called living inside your means... Granted, if you can afford the high upkeep and are willing to pay to play, then by all means, enjoy yourself.
5/6/2014 10:35:50 PM
or 10 tata nanos, or maybe it is 15.
5/6/2014 10:36:02 PM
If you have to ask, you can't afford it.I'm sure there are a number of people on this board who could get approved to buy a GTR new. There are probably a few who have the cash in the bank to do so. However I'm sure the number of people for whom it is an actual, viable option is probably less than 5. (I'm looking at you, CliffyB.)An about-to-be-out-of-warranty GTR? $50K to buy, and then probably another $10-20K to keep it running in the next few years. You're better off buying one that still has warranty left. If you can't afford that, you can't afford one at all.Probably the only person who could make a good case for buying a high-mileage GTR would be someone who intends to tear it down completely and build something even more balls-out. Most anyone else is buying a bundle of future regrets.

Hey you can get a 996 turbo with less miles on it than that for cheaper then that....But maintenance will probably be a nightmare still.

Yeah if you are going to take it to ams and have an alpha omega (alpha 7 or better I think rebuilds engine and tranny) built then yeah go for it.Otherwise... Pass
5/7/2014 8:15:49 AM
As a guy that was in a similar situation last year, I suggest your boyfriend go buy a cheaper car (370z), and build it to his liking. I'd rather have a highly modded 370z (with parts I purchased and installed etc) than a used up GTR that I can only afford to make the payment on.

exactly what evidence of upkeep costs are you people claiming to speak on behalf of? 10-20k maintenance on a jap car? if the car has that many miles with the transmission intact, it was likely a parking lot stunner. i wouldn't have any issue buying it. to answer your actual question, instead of give you unsolicited life advice, look for the cheapest GT-R in the country on autotrader or what have you and assume that's about what the car is worth and try to get the best example within 5-10% of that price.
5/7/2014 9:56:22 AM
the real answer is that no one here owns or has any special knowledge* about the GTR and only knows as much as your boyfriend and no one here has a special google that provides them more information about the GTR than what your boyfriend can find. *knowing that nissan makes some junk (NMSJ) could perhaps be special knowledge

buy itinsure itwreck itbuy a porsche
5/7/2014 10:19:52 AM
Assuming the car has a clear history.... I don't think it is terribly priced. I would try to knock of a grand or so just because I like to haggle, but I'm not sure you will find many at that price range. I don't know much about the maintenance of GT-Rs, but having an extra $10k to put into it over the next 3 years would be a nice assumption. Hopefully you wouldn't even need it.Personally, I would stay away from ebay though. Best advice: Have him look at some 90s Vipers ]

Lol not gonna lie ... The sexiness of that 90s torque machine is unmatched for the price.[Edited on May 7, 2014 at 12:16 PM. Reason : .]

In case your boyfriend wants to join the orphaned car club.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-G8-GXP-Firehawk-1-9-/161297375433 ^ Most car groups are full of assholes, especially rice friendly groups. From all the forums I've read, I'd have to say the corvette forum was the least assholey (if thats a word).

I wish the “paging user x” thing would actually send a PM or something but alas here I am...I am biased against the GTR, so keep that in mind (it’s design philosophy is pretty far from my ideals. It’s Japanese, electro laden, looks like a middle school kid’s idea of a “cool” car, heavy, AWD, not to mention... it’s an aging Nissan). Anyway, from my experience 996 turbos are very reasonable to own. Parts are easy to get and it’s not hard to find a place to service one as the general architecture of the car’s familiar to German cars/Porsche mechanics. Parts IMO are very reasonable as well, but you always have to pay to play, especially as the power/weight go up. Even modern/high performance Corvette parts aren’t always dirt cheap. That said, the whole argument of “you didn’t buy a luxury car, it’s a race car for the street” is so full of stupid that I feel dumber to have considered responding to it in some way. Of course higher performance cars are a compromise but that’s no excuse for ridiculous service intervals or unreliability.

^^ haha what a fucking moron.I knew GTRs were pricy to operate, but I didn't know we were talking $5,000 brake jobs. Fuck that, even if you could get it done for half that. I'd buy something truly exotic and probably Italian if I was gonna pay that kind of maintenance cost. That said, I think that some of you are being a little overly chicken little about the GTR. Is it substantially more expensive to own than other stuff that's just as fast? Yeah. Would I ever buy one? No, for the same reasons as Ahmet and also my previously stated reasons. That said, do I think it's a truly prohibitive car to own? Not as far as I know. If you make a six-figure income (or very close to it), it's probably reasonably doable if you don't have other stuff taking much of your income. It would probably be financially enough of a burden that I personally wouldn't enjoy it unless I made enough money that it was irrelevant (at which point I'd even more certainly buy something else), but it's not an Enzo or McLaren or anything. You could do it if you wanted. Now, if you're stretching to buy a $50k car, and a few thousand dollars on the purchase price is meaningful (aside from just wanting to get a good deal on principle), then you have absolutely zero business with that car or really even anything else high performance at that price point...but certainly not a GTR.
5/7/2014 5:44:17 PM
My policy on all cars I've bought is that if I am worrying about initial price and repair bills to the point of being anxious I don't bother buying it. Just not worth it.

When the goddamn rotors alone are between 300 and 400 clams, you can keep your GT-R.I see one at least 3 times a week on my way to work. It looks like a toolmobile, complete with tool.
5/8/2014 3:39:36 PM
Heck, a set of front rotors for my Cayman is $325 at wholesale price. Good thing my car doesn't have the PCCB option though, front set of those is $9,450

As long as he doesnt let Nissan do the work himself its not very expensive to own unless he tracks regularly.$1800 for rotors/pads/SSline/fluidhttp://www.gtrlife.com/forums/topic/89704-kaizen-tuning-track-brake-package-for-gtr-pads-rotors-sslines-fluid-1799/These are perfectly fine for a daily driven GTR.Oil changes, fluids, etc. Are cheap if you do it yourself or have an indy shop do them, not really much more then any other car in the 100-150k range.
5/29/2014 4:53:19 PM
$1800 for brake parts without calipers is terrible.
5/29/2014 5:42:11 PM
brakes that don't overheat after a few laps are hard to come by and aren't cheap

I think that's to replace the rotors with steel ones so you don't have rotors that wear as fast as the pads and cost 10k to replace
5/30/2014 9:43:48 AM
5/30/2014 9:54:16 AM
Shit I was looking at 2800,1800 for front and rear stop techs on my Subaru...Granted that is with calipers but that makes me ok with that number for the gtr....Actually it makes it feel like a deal.

Everyone has forgot the premise of this thread was a guy that couldn't afford a GTR, trying to find one used up enough that he could possible get it. I love the argument that a GTR is a track car and needs 10k brakes. I bet 90% of the owners never take them to a track, tools don't track cars.
