If you pass through Times Square look around but don't eat there, go here.

Take the 1 to Inwood and walk the length of broadway.

I think it's 14 miles.

Start at 145th st and walk downtown somewhere. Walking along broadway watching Harlem turn into the upper west side turn into midtown and then downtown is interesting IMO. I bet it's a 7 or 8 mile walk.

It's pretty hilly once you get into washington heights in the 170's. kind of a shitty way to start a long walk.

I did the walk top to bottom in mid summer in 2010. We ate shake shack when we hit 72nd st. It was a bad idea.

I'd go to Shake Shack, Central Park, the Met, walk around the West Village, get a drink at Little Branch, and find a show to go to in Brooklyn

it's my favorite burger out there, so maybe I'm biased. better than In n Out which gets so much hype.

there's always the cheap, really good dumplings in Chinatown at Fu Zhou or Vanessa's.

Check out the Burger Joint in Le Parker Meridian...you'd have to get off Broadway just a little bit, but it's one of my favorite burgers in NYC...plus it's just a kind of cool experience

I'm pretty new to the city but here's some rando rambly stuff:

Pretty into the lower east side lately. I'd probably walk around there and the east village. the village in general I guess.

My favorite burger in New York so far is at Dudley's on Orchard St. in the LES.

Bareburger is also pretty good, there's one in the upper east side and I'm not sure where else.

I like Shake Shack but we had that in Miami so it's kind of run its course for me. Also the Shake Shacks up here got rid of their crispy golden crinkle cut fries in favor of fresh cut nonsense which are not as good, and the fries were kind of my main reason for going there, so I'm kind of over it.

Lucky's Famous Burgers is also good. There's one in Chelsea.

On that note maybe check out the High Line in Chelsea. I haven't yet but it should be blossoming a bit since it's getting a little spring-y. https://www.google.com/search?q=the+high+line&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=T8daU9_1H5PJsQTsmoKwDw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=2133&bih=1013&dpr=0.9

French Roast on 6th ave around I think 10th St. has great food, a little pricier than the others I've mentioned.

back to the LES - Orchard St. around Broome also has some good coffee shops, and there are some nice art galleries around there and also on Eldridge St. around Grand st. (I work at one of them :0 ) There are also some good bars around here if you're going drinking.

There's an extremely yummy chicken fingers joint called Sticky'z on i think 8th st. near 6th Avenue. And a good sandwich/grilled cheese place across the street called 5 oz. Factory. This is near Washington Sq. Park which is also worth a walk-thru or sit-down-for-a-bit.

Good coffee place on 6th ave and 12th st. called O Cafe.

The natural history museum is always good if you're into that sort of thing, and it's pretty much a very cheap suggested donation as long as you don't care about the special exhibits and movies. Still tons to look at without those. I don't know if you're with a group or alone but it's extremely chill and soothing to just wander alone, save for the occasional screaming child.

I've also been meaning to go to dead horse bay but that's too far for 1 day probably.

^^Vanessa's is good! It's right by my work and it's the cheapest meal I've found in the city I think.

I'd also recommend chicken and rice at Halal trucks if you just want something quick and $5 and extremely delicious and aren't really concentrating on foodie food.

I work on Allen St right across from Dudley's and really close to Vanessa's. we must work pretty close to each other. try Fu Zhou instead of Vanessa's next time. It's a hole in the wall but for $5 you can get enough food for 2 or 3 people.

I just moved back from NYC after graduate school. Basically, my word means something here.

Places you should visit (in no order):

Go check out the Brooklyn botanical gardens if they are open. Prospect Park. Walking along the East River in West Brooklyn has some cool sights. Go to the park near Grimaldi's in Brooklyn for an amazing view of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan. Central Park. Riverside Park has some cool spots overlooking the Hudson. Washington Square Park. West and East Village. Take the L into Brooklyn for a couple of stops if you want to hit a cool bar. For food, Murray Hill has some great shit. Dinosaur BBQ and The Strand Smokehouse are good BBQ places. In general, Queens has some crazy shit in Astoria and Long Island City. Liebman's Deli in the Bronx.

Concerning Shake Shack...I'm not trying to be a dick here but I'm sure it will come off that way so whatever. But without even getting into whether or not their burger is among the best in NYC (I would say no, emphatically), even if it were why on earth would you make this the one place you'd eat if you were here for a day?

* New York is a one of a kind city, why would you come here and eat something from a chain that's located in 4 other states and 4 other countries?
* As long as I've lived in NYC, I don't think once I've ever heard someone say, "New York has the best burgers in the world". I'm not saying they're not good here, as there are plenty of places I love going to eat burgers, but if you're here for only one day, wouldn't you want to eat something unique to NY? Not pizza? Not bagels? No deli sandwiches? Not any of the countless ethnic varieties that can be a struggle to get outside of their respective countries?

From someone that's only been to NY once:

I'll second that the highline is pretty cool.

I thought the Met was a little overrated but Central Park was worth walking through.

If you're looking to spend some $$ at dinner Keens Steakhouse was one of the best meals I've ever had. Then again, a client was paying for it so that helped....

To all the NYC experienced people...if I was planning a trip to NYC, what would be the ideal # of days to get a good visit to the city but not stay too long? Was thinking about planning a trip there in a few months and wanted to know if 4 days would be enough or should I try and add an extra day or 2?

really depends on what you want to see. Do you want to stay focused on Manhattan? Or spend some time in Brooklyn? I think more days keep you from getting burned out but costs can add up quick.

Personally, my first few trips I tried to cram a lot of stuff in and it felt like a chore at times. I got the big touristy things out of the way like the 9/11 site, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, etc etc. These days when I go up I tend to try and spend some time in different neighborhoods, enjoy some good food and otherwise just blend in. And I still haven't seen it all.

Got dropped off at Penn Station. Walked to the WTC via Broadway, popping in and out of side streets and shops that looked interesting. Took about four hours including all the stopping and side tracking. Took the subway from WTC to Yankee Stadium and took in a game for about 2 hrs. (Tanaka was pitching, but Jeter had the day off) Left from there taking the subway to Rockefeller Center. Walked from there back to Penn Station, taking another two hours to look around. Mission accomplished. Perfect weather. Good day.

Thanks for the advice,

Corey Lahey

Any NYC travelers have some recommended hotels?

Finally booked the flight(4 nights) and starting to plan out an itinerary and it seems our best bet is to stay on the island, preferably around the midtown area.

I've hit various websites but can't tell which sites to trust. One site will give a hotel 4-5* reviews and then the other site will just shit on it.

Also any restaurants that are "must-see's"? Seems like all of the ones I've "heard of" end up being touristy spots that are just over-priced and not worth it. Any recommendations(basically anything but a pure burger joint as the wife isn't big on red meat)?

I don't know much about the hotels, but a couple that might be worth trying as they are new so they're at least safe in that regard:

http://www.sheratontribeca.com/ - My mom who's pretty picky about stuff like this and usually stays at the W liked it here. Depending on what you're planning on doing in NY, you won't find a more convenient location to stay than here. Sure, it's a total zoo on Canal st but it has the greatest concentration of trains within the shortest walk of anywhere in the city and it'll be cheaper than most midtown hotels

http://www.citizenm.com/destinations/new-york/new-york-times-square-hotel - This is a really new hotel that supposedly has cheaper rates than most NYC hotels. I stayed in one in Amsterdam and, while very small and minimal, was pretty cool. I would stay again

As for restaurants...what kind of places do you like? Expensive or hole in the wall?

^As far as food, looking for a little of both. Going with the wife so we thought maybe a couple of nice restaurants for dinner and then some more local favorites or hole-in-the-wall type places with just good food/atmosphere.

Our plan for lunch most days was just to find something around whatever area we were at the time and look for places that looked cool/interesting.

As far as hotels go, post up the ones that you're considering. There are tons of hotels throughout midtown that range from abysmal to amazing.

I don't know what types of hotels you're looking at or your budget, but I've been to a few higher end hotels for work functions that were great (and you should be able to find discounted rates for each):

The New York Palace
The Carlyle
The Loews Regency

^I actually went ahead and booked the hotel last night, was between the Loews Regency and The Elysee. I teetered back and forth but ended up going with the Elysee just because it had some better deals but really debated the two. Both had great reviews on tripadvisor.

There are more restaurants to suggest for a short trip than there is space for...I keep a list of my favorites (38 of them) on Foursquare...but in the interest of being bored today and enjoying this topic, here are my top 15 picks:

Casual Places - good for lunch or late night, maybe dinner

Great Jones Cafe - Cajun food, very small hole-in-the wall place, great food, MUCH better than ACME
Saluggi's - pizza place right off Canal st
Crif Dogs - smoked&fried hot dogs with tons of toppings, open late, but good enough to not just be drunk food
* Wo Hop - 24 hour Chinese spot...probably the most famous of all the Chinese places, but there are plenty of times you can go here and not have to wait...must get Chow Fun
* Katz Deli - yeah yeah, probably the most touristy of anything on this list, but it's worth it. New Yorkers eat here, it's way better than Carnegie or any of the others
* Pommes Frites - there's not always a line, and it is delicious
* Joe's Shanghai - there are a lot of Chinatown spots that serve soup dumplings, and they're all about equal, I mention this one because the food here overall is better, but if you don't want to wait just go to any of the others, like Shanghai Cafe..or Shanghai Kitchen, I forget
* Burger Joint - great burger spot hidden inside the Le Parker Meridien hotel
* Barney Greengrass - Not as touristy as Katz, but also not as easy to get to...people get smoked fish here but I don't...potato pancakes

Dinner Spots

Cafe Cortadito - Cuban, only been there once but it was fantastic, got the skirt steak
Arturo's - old school pizza/Italian place, not too expensive and the pasta's as good as the pizza
Malatesta Trattoria - Italian place, fresh pasta, reasonable prices
* Marc Forgione - Yes this is the top chef or iron chef guy or whatever he was on. The chicken under a brick for two is probably the best chicken dish I've ever eaten though...in general food is incredible here, like it gave me understanding of what people are talking about when they say shit like, "the acidity of the blah blah really complements the..." on the food network

Brunch

Cafe Habana - Cuban place that was so good it sparked me to start keeping track of restaurants
La Esquina - almost as good as the above, if there's a line at Habana this is a solid second option that's just a few blocks away

Everything with a star is a possible "touristy" spot that others might mention, but they are definitely worth going. I've lived here for 10 years now and I rarely stay away from any of these places unless the line is just too unbearable.

These reccos are all based on the assumption you aren't going to leave Manhattan and shrunken down...but if you're looking for something more specific or going into Brooklyn I can update
