TWW's resident space geek here. NASA is letting the public vote on what space suit design looks the best. The winner will actually be implemented. The suit itself is the same regardless, but you get to have a vote in how it will look.

Who design these? Adventure Time?

Isn't Adventure Time a cartoon? How would a cartoon design something?

The suit itself is designed by a bunch of really smart people who know lots of stuff about the human body and life support. When it comes to the actual color schemes and aesthetics, I have no idea.

I saw the suit in person, it looks just as ugly as the pictures, but still neat.

I'd rather we just not go back to space if this is all we have to choose from. We'll be the laughing stock of the solar system.

I think the idea here was to try and generate some interest from the public. Kinda like that ISS node that wasn't named after Stephen Colbert.

Just let the sponsors dictate what your shit looks like.

This #REDBULL #HOME DEPOT #BUDWEISER #SUNOCO Space Suit was runnin' really good and keepin' me cool and breathin'. I want to thank all my sponsors, Red Bull, Home Depot, Budweiser, Sunoco, Smithfields Chicken & BBQ and all the family at the Coca Cola spacin' team and all of my fans; I couldn't have done it without you.

Honestly, if it meant more funding for space flight I would be perfectly fine with sticking a Coca-Cola logo on the side of a rocket. Hell, if it didn't add too much weight, they could just repaint the SRBs to look like Duracell batteries if it means we can pay for more space flights. That's just me though.

I'd have to disagree due to the slippery slope nature of these things. You start with a Coca Cola powered rocket and end up doing scientific research to find out if a Mars bar tastes better on Mars. Conclusion: The entire galaxy can benefit from it's deliciousness, but it's currently only available on earth.

This is bullshit and I was seriously disappointed.

It's not a vote on the spacesuit design, it's a vote on the DECALS. What a fucking waste of time.

^^ what aspects of the space suit design do you think should be subject to popular opinion...

lol it's not like they are gonna let people vote on the shape of the helmet or something practical like that. Anything that affects the functionality of the suit is the result of tons of data, research, and testing.

Although I honestly like the Buzz Lightyear paint scheme the best.

They are needed for humans that are in space. And the SLS is about to kickoff it's CDR design phase, so further than most launch vehicles typically make it before being canceled. Ares I was canceled shortly after PDR.
