Why are people impressed by this place? I went to one in SC and it was on par with a Lowes.

If I was in the market to work in a grocery store again this would be the one. Its employee owned, gives stock etc.

publix is the best grocery i've ever had the pleasure of using. not only do they have pretty much everything you need in stock, the employees are also very nice and helpful.

New grocery stores are nice grocery stores...for the most part.

If you were at a shitty Publix, it was probably opened a long time ago (and not remodeled since). The Publix in my area was opened about 10 years ago and is right in the middle as far as quality goes. A Harris Teeter that was opened a couple years ago is easily the nicest. That's how it goes...there really isn't much difference in quality of stores. Although people do have preferences based on store brand and different items that different stores carry.

^ if only they'd replace some of the food lions around here

i don't understand how the chain is still doing business...their prices aren't lower than anyone else's, they have less of a selection, and their sales are no better (and in many cases, worse) than a place like HT

^ there are six Food Lion's within 5 miles of my house and only one harris Teeter... that's probably why.

Years ago there were supposed to bring "Bloom" to the area, which was Food Lion's nicer grocery store. They never did though.

So, are Publix closer to Harris Teeter quality or more like a Food-Dog?

I'd burn down a Publix if it meant we could have a Wegmans.

Publix customers are loyal. Wegmans customers are fanatical. As evidenced by the above.

It'll be interesting to see Publix battle Teeter for market share once they move more solidly into this area. I was a little worried that Teeter would struggle based on being a smaller chain battling a much larger one, but the Kroger acquisition will help there. So far they've been very hands-off in terms of daily operations but they bring a lot of resources to the table that HT can draw on if needed.

I read somewhere that Publix in NC isn't going to double coupons

Because Ahold ruined it. The bigger Martin's aren't bad stores but the only thing they have going as opposed to the nicer Kroger locations (Carytown, Willow Lawn) is more consistent stock and better prepared foods.

Also the Martin's in Carytown is uselessly small.

Which one? I think the one on Davis Dr. is affordable when items are on sale.

Davis Dr. one is okay. Good seafood specials.

Where is this Publix supposed to be? There's already Whole Foods, Kroger, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Trader Joe's, Walmart Neighborhood Market, and a freaking Fresh Market within 10 minutes of my apartment.

Where do you live?
It's near the intersection of High House rd and Davis Dr.
