Need karaoke at my house tomorrow night. Here is what I have: TV with HDMI ports, wired sound system, receiver, chromecast, HDMI cables, Apple TV, DVD players. Can I buy a mic and some DVDs or download an app somewhere and make this happen? Or should I just buy a whole portable system from Walmart or Amazon prime or something?[Edited on March 14, 2014 at 1:25 PM. Reason : Lll]

just look on craigslist for an old wii with rockband if you're super pressed. you can hack it to get all the songs from the catalog

Green Jay,That's the worst suggestion I have heard in a very long time. Absolutely horrible.

Just read this:"None of this stuff is designed for Karaoke. The dynamic range of a human voice, uncompressed could easily damage traditional speakers"http://www.stereophile.com/content/can-you-make-karaoke-system-stereo-equips-1which could explain why the speaker in our kitchen ceiling was smoking the last time we did karaoke (via a friends machine)

If your receiver has a microphone jack, basically all you'll need is a microphone. Most mics you buy will have a 6.35mm jack, but you can go to radio shack or somewhere and buy an adapter that lets it work on your receiver if it only has a 3.5mm microphone port.EDIT: I just looked at my setup, and my microphone is technically a PC microphone. You may need a different setup with a real microphone. For the music, use Chromecast and Youtube (most Youtube songs have "lyrics" versions that work perfect even if you can't find a "karaoke" version of the song).Works perfect for karaoke party. Before I had Chromecast, I would just plug my laptop straight into the TV via HDMI port.^ That's stupid. Only dumb drunk people blow their home theater speakers singing karaoke. General rule of thumb, keep the volume reasonable and don't let drunk people touch the volume controls.[Edited on March 14, 2014 at 3:20 PM. Just buy a cheap system and make sure everyone gets really drunk before it gets started.

You can buy a cheap PA that will sound fine, be more resilient, and save your hi-fi speakers for less than $150.

we ended up hiring some wedding Dj dude to come over and do the whole thing for $75. Seems much simpler than youtubing shit all night
