Anyone ever do this or know how to? Car has the feau wood trim around it and several buttons are broken. Got a newer one from a salvage yard.

Cd player will stay, this is the part with all other buttons and radio preset buttons on it...

How much to swap them out?

It helps to know the specific model year or generation on something like this.

I have an 06' and changed the head unit bc it was terrible. Did a lot of digging on t4r.org, and found out a lot of people get Scion (brand of the car) radio because they are plug and play and your steering wheel controls will still work. I got one out of a junkyard for $75, and the sound in my car is 10x better. It's really easy to change out. Go to that website I listed above and it will give you step by step instructions. However if you have a different generation 4runner I just wasted 2 minutes of my life. Here's the one I got.

I have the most basic model for a 1998 4Runner. (It is my spare car, but I like a radio that works)

I've changed mine out on an '04. It's not hard, but you have to remove the trim around the console, and the entire left side trim around the dash to change out the radio. Really time consuming.

There are videos on youtube and step-by-step guides on t4r.org

EDIT: whoops, i missed that you said it was a '98. different generation, so it'll be different on a 3rd gen. that said, t4r.org is a great resource for this kinda stuff.

3rd gen will have a ton of write ups as ^ said. You will have to remove center trim and possibly the center console as well (you may be able to shimmy the center trim around near the handbrake). Just take your time around the edges. It should all be pretty basic 2/4 screws, square plug into square hole, etc.
