My boyfriend and I are trying to add moisture to the air in our house without a humidifier. We both agree that we should boil a pot of water. He says it will work better/faster if we leave the lid on the pot. I say it will work better/faster if the lid is off.

I plan on settling the debate by buying a humidifier, but until then - who is right?!

I'd assume lid on til the water is actually boiling and then lid off after that

yes to the lid. the increased steam velocity will result in more efficient water vapor atomization or some crap

no lid = lots of water vapor returned as condensation on the underside of the hood

What if the pot isn't under the hood? Would the situation be different if we were talking about a crockpot?

My guess is after a few days you'll spend more on energy to increase vapor pressure than the cost of equipment to increase surface area

You're wasting time keeping the lid on where it could be evaporating up to the boiling point

I don't know the answer to the question.

But I'd just buy a humidifier

step 1 get about 1 inch standing water on your entire floor
step 2 call a carpet drying service
Your house will be humid as fuck for about a week

fwiw my daughter's Hello Kitty humidifier has a top that reduces the outlet opening to little slits to better disperse/atomize the steam
