congrats.at this point in my career, I'd prefer more vacation time than more money. Anyone else feel like that too?*Not because I make so much that I don't need anymore money, but I'd just like more time away from work, and I'm comfortable with what I have.
2/7/2014 9:40:45 AM
They cap our vacation @ 400 hours these days. By my calculations, ill hit that cap by this time next year, and will have to start taking timeoff each month, or lose my accrued time
2/7/2014 9:44:50 AM
I got 1% this yearRAISE THE ROOF
2/7/2014 9:45:45 AM
yeah ours is 280. 400 would be spectacular.I found out in december ago that I hit my limit in October and lost about 4 days of vacation took a few days off around the holidays, and then i was down with the flu this week, so now i'm good for a few months.[Edited on February 7, 2014 at 9:47 AM. I hear you though. I definitely value my free time more than I did 5 or even 3 years ago. If I had a wife and kid, I would certainly opt to spend more time with them than be paid more if those were my two black and white choices. However, currently, I just have a girlfriend and a dog. And my dog is arguably happier to see me when I come home than my girl is. Also, I get to blame my farts on the dog, and he still loves me.^ we have vacation that accrues every month, several fixed holidays, and a set number of hours of floating holidays per year. No other concept of PTO.[Edited on February 7, 2014 at 9:58 AM. Reason : jj]
2/7/2014 9:53:50 AM
i'd still rather get more money. i like doing work too much to take vacation. and even though i technically have a defined PTO, in practice i end up just taking time off whenever i want and my boss will be fine with it.
2/7/2014 10:05:46 AM
^^, ^^^yeah we've had the same system as long as i've been at csco-- PTO umbrella covers vacation, sick days, etc. This week was the first time i've taken PTO for illness in 15 years*. *I almost always work through illness, but I was leading a con call on monday, and as I was wrapping things up, i looked down at my notes and saw that I hadn't written anything down, and I also had no idea what transpired during the call. by that point, I had a high fever, chills, and a general feeling of inebriation. had to tap out.--^ I'm definitely fortunate that my wife works and makes more than I do, so I dont feel as much pressure to be the bread-winner as I did in the past. Don't get me wrong--I like my job a lot, but I also really value my time away from it. The older I get, the more ridiculous my old mentality of wearing my 70 hour weeks as a badge of courage becomes.
2/7/2014 10:42:28 AM
We have a different charge for sick time, that comes out of overhead. There are no hard rules on how much sick time we have alloted to us, and it seems to be an understood rule not to abuse it of course. That being said, I usually come into the office, except when I'm sick. Then, I just work from home so as not to spread germs around the office. I probably haven't taken an actual sick day in over 2 years. The one time I can remember taking a sick day was when I got some sort of food poisoning and had my Asshole stitched to the toilet and my mouth aimed into the bathtub, because stuff was coming out of both ends of me. This was before I went to the hospital like a little bitch.

I, too, took a new position with a significant promotion. And like BobbyD, I lost 5 vacation days last year because I couldnt find the time to take them Unlike BobbyD though, I'd much rather get that moneyyyy than more vacation. Mainly because I dont have enough time to take more vacation anyway, so I might as well get compensated for it Use it or lose it for us....I get 160 hours of vacay (4 weeks), 24 hrs of "discretionary" holiday hours, and unlimited sick days. Just dont abuse the "sick" days. I think I've taken about 4 sick days in the last 7 years here.[Edited on February 7, 2014 at 3:09 PM. Reason : .]

I've pretty much lost 5 vacation days per year the last 10 years. I like my job, but it is very hard for me to get away from work for more than 1-2 days at a time. I guess it's part of the territory running a small manufacturing operation where 100s of decisions are made daily. Thankfully I have a good work/life balance in terms of my hours and I intentionally take longer lunches to make up for the longer days/lost vacation.
2/7/2014 3:45:45 PM
jesus, 400 hours?we get 4 weeks. 5 at 5 years or VP, whichever comes first. You can carry over 5 days worth from year to year.
2/7/2014 5:56:33 PM
We start at 3 weeks, but at 5 years get an extra week.
2/7/2014 9:47:24 PM
me too! but dude 50/35 day caps? Thats pretty sickjadn, it sounds like DB is pretty good, I'm only 23 days but I can carry 10 over without approval which is nice
2/7/2014 10:36:35 PM
Yeah, it's not bad. We lost a guy on my team to Amazon last year. He only got 2 weeks after being used to 4. Still dunno why he didn't at least negotiate for 3.Although tbh I usually end up taking a week during the year and then taking everything after our code freeze in December. That usually ends up at around 3 weeks, then I use my rollover days in the first week to get around a month off in total.Gaming the system, son.

I just got a raise. Figured I'd bump this thread.Got a 28% raise last month, and added to my work load. Then I just got another job offer that I accepted. This is 16% higher than my raised rate, or 49% higher than a month ago, while less hours and less work load.Sweet. I'm making real money now.
8/26/2014 10:22:19 AM
Congrats, man!
8/26/2014 10:28:01 AM

8/26/2014 11:00:32 AM
Actually doing a cash out refinance currently. Maxima will be paid off, and total liabilities drop to about $1k a month.Going to be very cash heavy in the next couple months and will finally be able to get serious about investing.
