I might live there starting very soon. But I've seen things about crime rates there and in Oxford (http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Henderson-North-Carolina.html)I want to live on the NC side of the NC/VA border, but work very close to the border on the VA side (i.e. stay closer to Raleigh). What should I do? Where should I live? Should Henderson be avoided at all costs (if so, where else?)

I wouldn't want to live in Henderson. That branch of my mom's bank has been robbed twice in the last few years.

I don't know where else I'd live though...One of the houses that I'm looking at is a little out of the way, but has a security system and a dog.

My mom might know of some of the nicer places around Henderson to live. She lives in Louisburg but she sometimes works at the Henderson branch. Lemme send her an email. She won't be awake now though.

yeah, i would avoid henderson if at all possible. higher crime rate than durham

Looking at the map I'm thinking Louisburg and Franklinton are decent options, although I haven't been to franklinton in a while. Dont know much about Oxford. I wouldn't live in Warrenton.

I used to live in Norlina. it was pretty safe

I grew up in Henderson and most of my family still lives there. My wife also still works there. It wasn't that bad when we were growing up but I think it has gone downhill since then. We now live in Franklinton/Youngsville and love it. The schools in Henderson are pretty bad now. Pretty much everyone that can afford it, sends their kids to private schools. Those legs are like 2 miles from where I grew up. My fraternity use to camp in Henderson and we took a picture in front of it one year when it was still just one leg.tl;dr: This video pretty much sums it up

I can't live in Creedmor or Youngsville, they're both over an hour away from where work (Virginia).I looked at Petersburg and Danville, VA, but they're also a bit further out. I don't mind living up to 45 minutes away, but that's what Henderson is.It also has twice the population of Oxford, so I assumed it would be a better area to live. I worked in Oxford last summer, and it seemed a bit desolate and deserted (and I got also sorts of "oh you're Jewish" funny looks) (a quick google search confirmed that there are no Jews in Granville county, but I can't be too picky)elise, would you mind? That'd be greatly appreciated.

You could get a place at Kerr Lake. Not sure if that is your thing but it is a pretty decent lake minus the water level fluctuations. I'd say that area is pretty safe and not too far away from Henderson for when you do need to go into town. It is also closer to VA. I have actually thought about one day moving there but it would be about an hour commute to work for me.

Live and work in Oxford for about 5 years now. Not a bad place(boring but thats about it). Easy to get to Raleigh and Durham.
1/21/2014 9:37:44 AM
Kerr Lake is an hour and a half from Raleigh and an hour from work. Not what I'm looking for. Lovely area though...And Dynasty2004, where in Oxford do you live? Can you recommend neighborhoods/apartments to live in?And boring is one word for it...

eraser lives in Oxford and seems to like it. He's on their fire department so he can probably tell you more about the city than anyone.

I have a house in the Country Club area. Good part of town. as for rentals I would suggest looking at http://www.floydrealtync.com/ pretty much only rental company in town. If you are looking to buy in a neighborhood probably I would suggest Oxford Park but there are a few others. http://www.oxfordpark.com/

I have a friend who lives in Oxford, on College street near downtown (or what passes for downtown). Beautiful old house, though he's had to do a full renovation on it, still kind of a work in progress. I felt safe walking around in the daytime though he seems to think it's not such a good idea after dark. The house across the street from him needs to be saved (front porch is close to falling off and the whole facade has a bit of a sag to it, but I don't think it's too far gone...) Up for a *big project?

I emailed her last night. No response yet.

You couldn't pay me to live in Hennason. No clear boundaries between hood and safe. I got lotsa family around Kittrell. Even more boring, quite rural, but easy access to US1.
1/21/2014 1:00:32 PM
I, too, know people that live in Kittrell. Boring and safe.Mom agrees with me. Louisburg, Franklinton, and she also mentioned Kittrell.[Edited on January 21, 2014 at 1:04 PM. Reason : .]

My Dad lives basically in Kittrell even though he has a Henderson address. I got married in Kittrell too at Plank Chapel. Kittrell is basically Kittrell Grocery, Dollar General, Job Corp, and a fire department.

Where exactly will you be working?
1/21/2014 6:04:34 PM
^Thank you, that is extremely helpful! I'm going to visit and drive around town tomorrow and look at a house that according to Google maps is in the Old West End, north of Raleigh Rd and Garnett St and Corbitt Rd. Any knowledge about that neighborhood? I haven't seen anything for rent around the country club /:

Update:Went to Henderon, looked at some houses/Duplexes for rent inside the city, there were rarely houses that weren't in shambles. There was a part of a street that was safe because the 5 people on that block all knew each other and were cool and were friendly, but if you went to the end of the street, it was sketchy as fuck.My suspicions were the more remote you were, the more likely you were to get robbed, but that's pretty much the opposite of the case.Found a house that's way more remote that a friend of mine who recently moved to Henderson is renting, it's adorable and she's wonderful and has a cat and a dog and it's cheaper than living in an apartment or townhouse alone in Oxford.Gonna leave as soon as I can.
