I opened some miso soup today. This was in the top. I have never gotten miso that had this before. There's no English on the package to tell me what is going on. Is this something I am supposed to add to miso soup, or is it a chemical preservative packet that says "WARNING DO NOT EAT"?[Edited on January 16, 2014 at 7:08 PM. Reason : Sorry for the cat hair. also, I don't even know if that is upside down. ]

"help, I'm in a factory hand painting labels for seasoning packets!"
1/16/2014 7:42:24 PM

Aww. I was hoping it would be delicious
1/16/2014 7:55:42 PM
Pretty sure that if it was poison and sold in the US it would have to be labeled in english. Also there is a pot symbol.I am betting you're supposed to eat it

You are giving a whole lot of credit to the sketchy Asian market where I bought it.

http://www.tanoshiijapanese.com/dictionary/entry_details.cfm?entry_id=34378&element_id=46180&conjugation_type_id=203rd entry from bottomsame as the word on the package that picture of the bowl is misleading though. maybe it just means to not eat the foil wrapper, ha. I can't read the kanji (fancy chinese characters)how about you just open it. If leaves and powder, add to soup. If chemical pellets, do not add to soup[Edited on January 16, 2014 at 8:05 PM. one of the words on there is "miso"

tchenku is a pretty stand up guy. I would trust him on issues such as this.
1/16/2014 8:02:48 PM
I'm not sure how something in a foil packet is supposed to absorb moisture

Google Translate agrees with you: http://translate.google.com/#ja/en/%E3%81%9F%E3%81%B9%E3%82%8C%E3%81%BE%E3%81%9B%E3%82%93(I actually just typed "taberemasen" and had it transliterate to hiragana, although the first character it chose by default was the kanji for "ta" and I used the IME to get the hiragana; then I verified that it looked the same as what was on the package.)[Edited on January 16, 2014 at 8:08 PM. Reason : It's probably silica gel, a common desiccant.

Stop trying to poison skwinkle, BigMan
1/16/2014 8:08:14 PM
the moral of this story isdo not buy food from sketchy asian markets that do not care if they may accidentally kill you
1/16/2014 8:10:30 PM
lol, in china they have so many people, they can just accidentally kill a few [hundred] without anyone batting an eye
1/16/2014 8:14:18 PM
its authentic chineseso even if its seasoning and spices, its actually chemicals and gutter sludge they turned into something that resembles seasoning and spices
1/16/2014 8:20:56 PM
I opened it. This is what happened. It looks edible? It's more brown than it appears in the photo.
1/16/2014 8:23:13 PM
OH GOD YOUVE DOOMED US ALL
1/16/2014 8:26:07 PM
Anthrax'd
1/16/2014 8:29:04 PM
don't eat that yo
1/16/2014 8:34:01 PM
snort it, see what happens
1/16/2014 8:43:19 PM
Mmmmmmmmm, yummy.

I relish every opportunity to gamble my soul during dinner. An honorable instant noodle meal will test a man's determination to survive, and punish those that approach it with an impure heart.
1/16/2014 9:37:46 PM
holy crap this is hilarious. Skwinkle are you still with us?!
1/17/2014 12:06:26 AM
thank god we didn't ban shoot
1/17/2014 12:13:57 AM
I have risen.
1/17/2014 7:06:26 AM
did you snort it?
1/17/2014 7:08:30 AM
I thought about it, but no.
1/17/2014 7:22:07 AM
This is what your nose is for. If it smells like food it is probably fine. It would be extremely sick and twisted to make silica gel that smells like food. Also, how easy to open was the packet? If you were able to tear it open fairly easily it is probably meant to be eaten. If you had to use scissors or a knife you probably shouldn't eat it.
1/17/2014 9:22:21 AM
It didn't really smell like anything. I just cut it open.

http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/4-disgusting-ingredients-restaurants-secretly-added-to-food/Chinese food makes it on the list twice. Once for using ground up poppy pods to addict people to their food, and another for using oil rendered out of sewer scrapings to cook with.

So I could either get high or be eating poo. Not sure I like that gamble.
1/17/2014 9:58:50 AM

my friend that lived in Japan says:'must not eat'the brand is "Vitalon" or Bitealong"V(or b)i Ta L (or r) ong[Edited on January 17, 2014 at 10:25 AM. Reason : also, the edges are not made to be easily opened... no zigzag cut]
1/17/2014 10:22:25 AM
With several people who can actually read it saying no dice, I won't eat it. I still want to know what it is, though. And why is it in the top of miso block when it looks just like the little ramen seasoning packets?
1/17/2014 10:24:40 AM
It looks like some sort of charcoal
1/17/2014 10:25:19 AM
did you taste a little bit of it at least? just a dab
1/17/2014 10:33:53 AM
you should roll that up and smoke it
1/17/2014 10:43:42 AM
It's probably MSG or flavoring. Even in Japan, I seriously doubt they would include something in your food packaging that would kill you.
1/17/2014 10:56:06 AM
eat it, eat itit's only 20% dirt
