I've been trying to use LogMeIn, but the performance is so poor that it's not useful for anything. I've got RR Turbo at home, and pretty good internet at the office, but even with turning the graphics way down it still had terrible lag and frame rate.If I setup a VPN and use RDP, will that give me better performance? I'm assuming the LogMeIn competitors will offer similar performance (Splashtop, TeamViewer, etc...)? I wish Microsoft didn't kill fetch and remote control in Skydrive, that worked fine

radmin

if it works, i'm fine with the price. i'll try it out.
12/31/2013 3:18:51 PM
What are you trying to do exactly? If you are wanting to stream video or play a game or something, you're going to need something more heavy duty like PCoIP. If you are just wanting to browse the web, support family remotely or something like that, Teamviewer works great.
12/31/2013 3:34:57 PM
I would love to be able to use Photoshop Lightroom or watch video.
12/31/2013 3:40:32 PM
Splashtop had better video streaming performance than RDP, LMI, or TV when I was using it on my tablet. Wasn't there an improvement with Server 2012 and/or Windows 7 with RDP?
12/31/2013 3:43:37 PM
^That's true, RDP8 might help some. I don't know about Lightroom, but watching video isn't a realistic expectation though.
12/31/2013 3:51:52 PM
Look around the black-hat forums for RATs you can put on your computer, then try one out.
1/1/2014 2:17:23 AM
If I setup a VPN I could watch movies by accessing the files that way. Would RDP be faster than logmein for trying Lightfoot?
1/1/2014 11:20:30 AM
Actually, I just realized I don't have Windows Pro on the home computer so I guess RDP isn't an option
1/1/2014 3:01:43 PM
Thanks for the heads up there guys. Got the following notification when I logged in today.
1/21/2014 1:20:04 PM
What's your upload on Turbo? If you're at like 5mbps you're limited by that. The "turbo" doesn't matter as it's your down stream speed. When I switched to 10mbps upload on Comcast remoting home was a much more pleasant experience.
1/21/2014 1:32:02 PM
yeah, logged in today to the "Soon LogMeIn Free will no longer be available." messagetime to find something else! looking for some free alternativeshttp://www.mikogo.com/http://www.remotepc.com/http://www.remote-control-desktop.com/https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-remote-desktop/gbchcmhmhahfdphkhkmpfmihenigjmpp?hl=enhttp://www.teamviewer.com/http://www.pocketcloud.com/http://www.crossloop.com/mktg/learnmore_freehttp://www.ammyy.com/en/[Edited on January 21, 2014 at 2:00 PM. I really like Splashtop for my phone or tablet but usually for PC to PC I just use RDP through an SSH tunnel. At 10mbps my home upload is fast enough for it to be nice and smooth. If it's Windows obviously.
1/21/2014 2:05:31 PM
Wow ... what a clusterf@#$.So long, Logmein, my infrequent use of you over the years was nice.Onto Teamviewer.Splashtop requires yearly subscription for Anywhere Access, boo.
1/21/2014 2:50:15 PM
^I must have gotten in before the yearly fee because I don't pay anything.
1/21/2014 3:01:33 PM
The old Splashtop and Splashtop HD had the one time purchase fee. The newer version (Splashtop 2) is free to download but requires a monthly or yearly subscription for computers outside of your local network. Quality seems to be a bit better than the original but isn't worth the premium. I just use PhoneMyPC for my home computer and the Microsoft remote desktop app for the computer at work.As for logmein, I've already installed TeamViewer and the Chrome Remote Desktop extension which seem to be more than enough. We have Logmein Central at work but I may switch that just for the hell of it.haha. Forgot about this. From when the started limiting the free accounts to only 10 computers last March. obamacare all over again.http://blog.logmein.com/it-management/important-changes-to-logmein-free
1/21/2014 3:13:36 PM
apparently google has remote control through, chrome. has anyone used it?
1/21/2014 4:02:52 PM
yup works fine. I used logmein to install it.
1/21/2014 4:30:28 PM
Yup, used Logmein to install Teamviewer on a couple machines, classic. TV is not my favorite interface, but it gets the job done and IS snappy. Oh, and hello Android app, you're actually pretty nice to use.If I was only concerned with my computers I'd just OpenVPN and RDP/VNC ... but that does nothing for needing a minimal effort tool to help the in-laws and family. Thanks, TeamViewer.
1/21/2014 5:19:29 PM
RDP isn't an option for me because my laptop isnt Win8 Pro
1/21/2014 5:58:21 PM
video performance with RDP in Win8/Server08/2012 is awesome. Instead of rendering remotely and pushing pixels over the network, it passes the directx handle to the local device and streams the video data across the pipe, rendering on the local client.Works great, uses a fraction of the bandwidth, and by itself is worth upgrading to Pro on both end.
1/21/2014 9:44:56 PM
The entitled shits in the LogMeIn support forum are a laugh riot.
1/22/2014 4:15:18 AM
ha, their forums are about as much of a clusterfuck as they are. I did lol at people threatening a class action lawsuit though.
1/22/2014 8:55:23 AM
1/22/2014 9:04:36 AM
^If you want to upgrade, shoot me a PM.
1/23/2014 4:25:33 PM
Well, Logmein is no longer free. This sucks.http://lifehacker.com/five-best-remote-desktop-tools-1508597379
1/27/2014 12:21:03 AM
Is TV the consensus free alternative now? Just remoting in a few times a year for tech support.
4/2/2014 12:51:15 PM
Despite what that article I linked to says, LogMeIn is still free, up to 10 computers per free account (at least it is for me)
4/2/2014 7:39:00 PM
not for me. last two times I've logged in, it wouldn't let me do anything but start paying them. no thanks.
4/2/2014 8:44:20 PM
lame. i wonder why they let me stay for free? i actually have two free accounts.
4/2/2014 10:01:44 PM
I pretty much exclusively use RDP unless it's from a mobil device like my phone or tablet then I use Splashtop which is still free for me.
4/2/2014 10:16:12 PM
^^In my experience, the grace period starts when you actually log into LogMeIn and lasts for seven days; your accounts must have been dormant.
4/4/2014 12:34:29 AM
^ I'm not following you...I use them nearly daily.
4/4/2014 11:59:37 AM
Yeah I just logged in for the first time. Can't use it at all.
4/4/2014 12:14:36 PM
guess you're just lucky, then...you're the exception, not the rulelogmein can suck a fat one, teamviewer is faster for me, and less problematic (i occasionally had weird keyboard/mouse issues with logmein)the "free sponsored session" popup is more annoying than i would have thought, but not bad enough to pay for TV
4/4/2014 5:48:13 PM
GoToMyPC works pretty well for me.
4/4/2014 9:09:14 PM
^^My sole complaint with TV is that when I disconnect from a computer it logs the user back out. I used to use LMI to give my kids access at certain times and when I ended the session, they could still be logged in, because I don't want to give them my password. Other then that I really like using it.
4/5/2014 9:59:51 AM
4/5/2014 7:41:02 PM
I think you can change that behavior in Advanced Settings.
4/8/2014 5:34:47 PM
been using teamviewer since logmein went paid-only. but teamviewer was down this morning so i ended up trying chrome remote desktop on a few machines, surprised how good it is. think i'm done with teamviewer
5/22/2014 11:30:53 AM
Screenconnect works well for me so far.
5/22/2014 6:48:56 PM
^^But don't you need to have Chrome running on the target machine to use Chrome Remote Desktop?
5/22/2014 10:40:52 PM
probably, yes
5/22/2014 10:48:15 PM
you dont
5/22/2014 11:01:27 PM
so apparently teamviewer has been compromised
6/2/2016 7:34:55 PM
^ maybe
6/3/2016 10:26:05 AM
I heard reports of MFA getting breached?
