I am wondering which is the better way to build a good 2.0/2.1 computer/bookshelf speaker system. It would be primarily used to listen to music and occasionally for movies and games i) buy 2 powered speakers and add dac/subwoofer later ii) but 2 passive speakers and a refurb av receiver/amplifier to power them and add subwoofer later. Specifically I am considering these two: a)Audioengine A2+ which is a 2.0 powered speaker with buit in dac b) Infinity Primus 163 with the cheapest nd refurb Onkyo/Denon receiver( I can't find a good amp near 100 that can power these speakers)

Infinity Primus makes a great speaker for the buck. I had a 5.1 set of them once.

Also check out Cambridge Audio S30s. You can get them for $180 a pair and have awesome reviews. I just a pair for the zone 2/kitchen and I like parts of them more than my Energy RCs.

accessories4less.com has good deals on refurb receivers. I've bought a bunch of things and its always just like new.

Refurb Denon + S30s would be really solid. Add a sub some day and you'll be golden.
