all of my friends from colllege that used to be regulars cite the same reason as why they left this site

THE MODS

Basically there like a group of best friends who wound up as mods forever and don't operate under anything that resembles order on a regular message board. its ran like a thug government.

they allow
-racism
-padding
-off topic spam

they don't allow
-stuff they disagree with
-stuff they don't like
-suff their friends don't like

so now the site is pretty much just them their friends new people and a few people like me who stick around as a habit

tww is a unique snowflake with its own beauty and flavor! And the off topic spam is one of the best parts.

Also, as long as the racism doesn't include antagonizing or harassing users, people should be allowed to be as racist as they want to be. Right? Because America.

And I think the big circle of friends rooted in this forum adds to the T-Dubness that makes this place entertaining.

sooooooooooooooooo....are you saying you want moderators that are more involved and strict? the general consensus with the mods has been less moderation is better. most of my moderation duties have been editing posts per request of the poster. i can't remember the last time I suspended someone.

i thought most people left this site because of all the dick head aliases.

yeah this is a pretty silly complaint.

in years past some of the moderators would be bucket heavy, but i haven't seen any problems with the moderation in a while.

not sure if you mean messageboards specifically, but when I was in Prague in Old Town Square I saw two young guys run up out of nowhere and push this older guy down to the ground and start kicking him. Without skipping a beat, the young guys turn to me and said "we did because he is Roma".

It's like open season on gypsies out there.

oh, and also - people left the site because people can be mean as shit on here. This is especially true with how we treat new users. Everyone wants to "call out the noob" and it's not very welcoming. I mean that's TWW and all, but whereas when this site was founded people wanted the service because there weren't social media platforms like there are now to organize things so TWW could afford to run off a few people. Now, the site needs that traffic but we still continue to run people off.

Someone in school kids records in 2007 in my second week of school told me about this site, and their exact words were "It's got a bad reputation and the moderation kind of sucks, but its a pretty cool resource for students".

The site is just outclassed, which sucks. I prefer this kind of site to the other memespouting bs on the internet. Its nice to read a site where every other post isn't "Wow so doge" or some shitty good guy macklemore repost. This site rules. Its the perfect balance of original content and trolling. Your a stain on the internet if you don't agree.

Less fitness manwoman threads would be nice.

Also I don't think the moderation sucks. I think the long term bans are a little retarded. A spoiler feature would be pretty cool too

The answer to the question is easy...people are aging out. Spouses, kids, and/or real jobs will eventually have most users leaving this site.

The real question is why aren't new[younger] users joining the site? This place should be a turnstile for users...mostly students at NC State. There are no reinforcements.

its because 8 years ago, over half the threads were related to goings-on in raleigh and campus related stuff. now its mostly just memes and or other random shit.

new users wouldn't be able to identify with anything.

Other sites meet the needs this site used to fill much better:

People can keep up with their friends and family on facebook. You can share photos and videos and people don't have to pay $5 if they didn't go to NC State.

If you have some specific interest Reddit meets that need with a forum for just about any group.

^^Yeah but that would be explained by the lack of new users. That's circular logic. There aren't new NC State users because there are no descriptions of things going on at school that relate to them, there are no descriptions of those things because there are no new NC State kids to write them.

I would guess the real issue is the lack of new blood as well, but the reason is different. The development of Facebook and other methods of staying afoot of friends and people in your demographic has meant kids coming to State have less of a need or desire to join a message board that brings e-community.

I would say that compared to the States the majority of countries in Europe are more racists, but that this is because they are just less sensitized to it compared to us. Just look at the issues that are developing with Soccer now. Nearly every major country (Italy, Germany, France, etc...) is having to deal with public backlash from having more and more minorities play in their leagues. Europeans say "nigger" like they are at a fucking NASCAR race, and it is quite common to dress up in derogatory charicatures for outfits and parties.

I think that although racism is more prominent in Europe, they are more nonchalant about it because they haven't experienced the long history of racial oppression similar to what happened in the States with blacks and asians.

I think we have to be careful how we define racism in the international context. Racism is worse in the US than any place in Western Europe. Dressing up in a black Obama face is not racist but wouldn't fly in America because of the history of black faces being used in a racist way. There are fast food places in latin America that use black faces for chicken but nobody even thinks about it as racist like they would in the US.

Point is, USA has such a racist history that we consider racism as a lot of things that aren't racism but historically are directly connected to racist behavior.

Racism exists everywhere but the key is how does society view it. Racism is totally unacceptable in Germany. There are racists there but they are considered ignorant thugs by the majority of the population. Many european laws give jail time for any type of verbal or visual racism. Soccer hooligans do not represent entire populations either. They are typically uneducated young males and UEFA comes down with hard penalties for racial abuse.

Much of the racism in the UK is directed at the muslim community but it is nowhere near the level as it is in the US. The US has racism against every type of minority and even racism by the minorities. The police and government systematically use racial profiling as a system and racist laws still exist in several states. The US clearly takes the cake compared to most of the world

but as you head into Eastern Europe things get a little more sketchy and racism just like a lot of ignorant behavior is completely acceptable in much of Russia.

Either step back or moderate. Don't moderate based on your opinions. For example, I had a thread about a bad experience with a company locked just because the moderator enjoyed their experiences with that company.

Threads get locked or trashed all the time because the mods don't like the premise of the thread but when they do like the premise, its ok even if the op contains racism.

Pretty strange and uniquely annoying.
