Where were you? What were you doing when you heard about the explosion?

Considering that it happened on the morning of January 28, 1986, I was probably sucking a tit or something.

I remember being home from school. Maybe I was faking being sick or something. Anyway I watched it live on TV. Strange thing for a 7 year old to see.

At home, I remember seeing it on the news and my parents talking about it, but I was too young at the time to really understand.

^^where were you? I was out of school too; it was a snow day. Remember it perfectly seeing it explode and then looking at my mom like "wha...?"

2nd grade in PA. I barely remember it, other than seeing it on the news and having a discussion about it in class. Fun fact: We moved to NC that summer.

we had those rolly TVs in my bumfuck redneck K8 school in 1990, but they were just for VHS/LaserDisc (lol) and there were only a few in the "media center". we certainly didn't get cable until the late 90s

We were watching it in the school cafeteria live on WECT. We didn't have tv's in the classrooms then, but there were one or two in the school. We watched a lot of film strips well into the 90's even after we had VCR's, but when I was in elementary school they were still using a lot of the reel to reel film projectors.

Well, if they turned it off quickly enough, they might have been telling you the truth. It's believed that the astronauts actually survived the explosion and didn't die until they hit the ocean several minutes later.

yeah there was evidence that several astronauts attempted to activate emergency systems of some sort and were conscious the following seconds after the explosion. They likely had all blacked out by the time what remained of the cockpit hit the ocean since they were so high up and were depressurized.

I do remember being a little confused as a child about it... My dad was telling me about how they were putting the shuttle program on hold until they collected most of the debris and figured out what happened... I thought to myself "how are they going to go into space and collect all the debris if it keeps floating away without sending another shuttle up to get it"

My dad explained that it hadn't gotten to orbit yet and came crashing down into the ocean mostly.

this is when I conceptualized space (mostly) as it is... instead of being a big place that once you get there you just float around forever, I learned about orbits, etc. (granted it was an understanding on a kindergarten level)

I was 3 and half when it happened, I just remember adults and the news talking about the Challenger disaster every once in awhile and when I was old enough I learned about the explosion through the news.

When Columbia disintegrated during it's re-entry, I was in my dorm room (my sophmore year). I remember being on the phone talking to my mom, she was upset because they just found out my sister was pregnant (unplanned) and it was also her birthday. I had the news on, playing in the background and they cut away to breaking news and I hushed my mom and told her to put on the tv. I remember the images of the pieces or what they called "trails" going across the sky and I thought well where is the shuttle these trails are supposed to be coming from? I was confused. It was so sad.

Yeah, I definitely remember TV's in 3rd grade, which was '86/'87. And yes, the teachers had to sign up for them because there were just a few of the for the entire school. Mostly for tapes, but they had rabbit ears on them so I assume they could pick up the locals.

I was five and at home. I remember watching it live on an old TV that had a turn dial to change channels no remote. I knew it was a big deal but didn't understand why.
