I can't post in Old School, but I gotta ask- how can you sleep at night knowing that you put vinyl siding on a "custom" home??!?!?!?!?

If I may ask, how much does that home cost? If you're spending more than $200k and you put that crap on the side of your home, you should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't mean to call you out, but damn dude, you have a family. How can you sleep at night?

@BlackJesus-

Vinyl is a very cheap product. I would ask if he's going to have formica countertops and laminate flooring like Pergo.

That's one monstrosity of a house on a beautiful lot.

and if hardiplank was too much, you can get nichiha for less and it's even stronger with a longer warranty

@smoothcrim- pretty much right on.

Nichiha is what we're putting on our house. Their board is a little more heavier than HardiePlank, and some say more brittle.

I just can't fathom how some people would put vinyl on a home. Either they don't give a shit what their home looks like or they're ignorant.

for some reason in the dc area (where this house is going up) brick vernier and gross vinyl siding is the norm on nice houses. i see many like it near me in falls church and mcclean

So the argument against vinyl siding is that it looks bad.

And here I was assuming it would poison the guy's kids. Glad to know this wasn't about something superficial (〃´o` )=3 フゥ

Manufacturing it is bad for the environment.

It doesn't last that long.

It's not often recycled.

It's not great for energy efficiency.

It lowers the value of the home.

It molds.

It's one of the easiest claddings to install incorrectly.

...but keep pretending like you know anything (mrfrog).

Oh yeah, it's ugly. Great color choice too! -_-

The points ^^^ are valid AFAIK.

There was some documentary in the works a few years ago. The bottom line was "why did you get vinyl siding dad, when you knew it was going to kill us?"

I don't think the chemical leaching and killing us all was very substantiated, which is why the effort disappeared. There are still other points against it. It's concerning that in 20 years we'll have entire neighborhoods with faded sides. The generational shifts cause strange things...

You know what grinds my gears even more?

People who buy a 10 acre chunk of a forest so that they can build a house in the middle of it. Dude, why? Do you think your kids will appreciate the nature that you spent so much money to make less natural? I grew up in that kind of shit, and no, I did not appreciate living in hyper exburbia where all the homes are spaced several hundred feet apart.

It's not a real "forest" because the development and housepets kill the wildlife. If your goal is to demonstrate that you are reclusive, vein, and ignorant, then great job.

There are also documentaries that suggest marijuana use contributes to rampant psychotic breaks among teenagers.

^^^ growing up most of my friends lived in the woods. I thought it was awesome. Sucked in that Ice storm of like '03 because they didn't have power for like 2 months but usually them peoples are earth peoples who know how to survive for more than 2 days without a harris teeter a block away

I'd love to live in the woods.

They're not "supposed" to do anything. But I am saying that living on a 10 acre wooded plot is like kicking kittens because you discovered that you can't live among the Lions.

Only among the weak minded, those were the ones most destined to be failures anyway with or without drugs. The last two democratic presidents have admitted to ing and seem to be doing ok.

I'd like 10 acres with a house in the middle.

and a shooting range
and an offroading trail
and a fishing/swimming pond, or if big enough, for boats/jet skis
and a flat activity/athletic area
and a tree house/cabin
and a small farm/barn
and a dog rescue holding facility
and a landing strip

so mr. frog, what's wrong with that?

I know a guy who has 20-30+ acres and has all of those things (multiple of some), outside of the last two. Always fun to visit there.

It does not do any good to put hardiplank up in a neighborhood where every other house is vinyl. (not sure if thats the case here but it could be)

The exterior should be in character for the neighborhood or you are wasting money trying to upgrade it. I have seen plenty-a-fool put stone and brick on the outside of their house in a subdivision of vinyl homes and still have their house appraise for the same thing.

I'm pretty sure his house IS the neighborhood. I doubt it's being compared to much else around.

That being said...he gave an explanation to the vinyl siding in the Old School thread:

Quote :
"I am looking to someday replace the vinyl with either brick or another product.

Because I most likely will go brick/stone, but couldn't afford it right now, I didnt' want hardiplank as it is more destructive to remove than vinyl."

I've known plenty of people who said they were going to build a tree house. Maybe I was bitter about that kind of stuff as a child. I was bitter about many things as a child.

It's more realistic that someone will have exactly one of the things you list. That's a pattern I'm familiar with. One neighbor has a workshop, one has tractor trails, one has a picnic table.

Of course lots of people have barns, and lots of people have small lakes. But those people are growing something. I would like to grow something myself, but my ambitions wouldn't ever exceed 0.5 acres. That's a lot to manage. In a few decades, the entire world will average something like 0.6 acres of farmland per person.

And how many acres do you think will be sufficient for shooting and landing planes?

Sounds pretty smart to me...he is getting his big ass house now, and can re-do the exterior whenever he wants.

The problem with vinyl siding is if there are any places where it is not installed or flashed correctly it will rot the house all to shit, but that could be said for pretty much any exterior, vinyl is just less forgiving.

If you remove the vinyl siding later and replace it with something else, I take it that it just tears off?

Following the most recent economic crash, I mysteriously developed a soft spot for small, old split-levels. All you gotta add is a chain-link fence, a Wolfpack flag, and some year-round Christmas lights. Otherwise, I plan to be too drunk to care about the quality of my home's siding.
