if you have one, do you have gas or wood-burning?how often do you actually use it?is it one of those things that you thought was an awesome idea, would get tons of use, and now it sits unused on your patio or in your garage?do you have the kind with a little shelf around it?

Wood burning.Use it all the time if its cold outside.Burning shit is the jam.I had one with a shelf around it, which is awesome to put beerz on and then your beerz get all hot and bothered.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

you will need to think about how much fuel (wood) they holdi would want something a little deeper than that one unless you are going to be making small fires.
7/29/2013 4:59:28 PM
Out of curiosity why would you be moving it?I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

I have this one. http://www.frugalcouponliving.com/2011/12/08/weber-outdoor-fireplace-116-shipped/I like it but I don't use it as much as I thought. It's still nice to have for when I do want to have a fire outside.
7/29/2013 5:00:41 PM
just to get it out of the way. this is for my boyfriend's bday, he might not want it on his patio when it's not in use (he has two younger kids that run around all over the backyard/patio)I suppose we could just add some wheels to a cooler looking one though
7/29/2013 5:01:49 PM
This is a good bday present btwI'm Krallum and I approved this message.[Edited on July 29, 2013 at 5:02 PM. Reason : maybe you should get him a bigger patio first]
7/29/2013 5:02:17 PM
I can't really think of anything else to get him, and I know he likes hanging out on his patio. He already has plans to turn his current fireplace (in his family room) around so it faces out, but that won't be for a few years so I thought this might be nice in the meantime.[Edited on July 29, 2013 at 5:06 PM. if you live in a place with a HOA make sure you can have open fires. But wood is the only way to go.

i've built several gas ones. i love the gas units because 1) no smoke and 2) no getting wood= you'll use it more. Several folks i've installed use them weekly (we're talking lake houses) and one of the bonuses is they fend off mosquitoes because the bugs fly to them and burn to death... think of it as a pretty bug zapper

gas pits a shitI'm Krallum and I approved this message.

I do not see the attraction of one. If I am going to sit outside in the mosquitoes and humidity and shit it better be to tend to the grill/smoker. In the fall/winter one might be good, but I have a patio heater and its usually warm near the grill anyway. ]
7/29/2013 6:22:29 PM
custom built one I did.
7/29/2013 7:33:24 PM
my parents have the same boring mcmansion fire pit and patio, gas is boring. half the fun of a fire pit is building the fire, go with wood.
7/29/2013 9:09:09 PM
+1 woodI built one with a bunch of leftover pavers and blocks that the previous owner of this home left behind.Burned a decent amount of brush and swept the ash into all the cracks. Good rain actually made a decent grout. I had already put some granite gravel in the gaps as well.Fun project and cant wait for cooler weather. Already fun to sit around with a beer. Designing and building your own is a lot of fun. If you can lift a rock you can do it.

Wood burning. Used it a few times this past winter and once a few weeks ago to make s'mores. But I didn't get it until late last winter, so I'm sure we will use it a lot more this winter.[Edited on July 30, 2013 at 8:52 AM. Reason : a]

fuck a fire pit! get a chiminea and keep the smoke out of your eyes. i'll never go back to a pit again.
7/30/2013 9:02:43 AM
I used mine more on summer evenings when I would have people over than I did in the winter. It is good for bugs. I wish we still had one, but we decided to wait until we would be somewhere more than a few months. I'll probably build one rather than buy one.

The house we bought had a custom built wood burning pit on the patio. It's a hole in the ground lined and defined with pavers instead of being above ground. We dont use it nearly as much as i would like, but we use it a fair amount. Every three to four weeks at least. Having friends that live close by that enjoy caveman tv as much as we do helps. We used it most recently 2 weekends ago. Because of its design, we keep it covered with a board when it's not in use so our son won't fall in it. And during the summer I sit potted plants on the cover. I'd like to get a metal dome cover for it.We also have a propane heater that we sit around and use in the garage on rainy nights or my husband uses when working in the garage in the winter.

okay so I don't want to spend more than like $200 on this. this has the best reviews for the $$ on amazon (and I've looked at homedepot.com, lowes, overstock, etc). some reviewers remarked about how the grout was uneven or coming out, and I just hope this isn't really cheap IRL.what do you guys think about this http://amzn.com/B000WU8OJMand thishttp://amzn.com/B000HHO4W6

My mom's long-time boyfriend and I built this right after I bought this house:It's just a Home Depot/Lowes unit, kinda like the one shown ^. It's just one of the larger-sized all-metal ones, and I never attached the legs--just sat it into the space we left in the stonework for a firepit.I basically never use it. Most of my friends live 45 minutes or an hour from me, so my house is never the hangout. Also, it's FL, so it's hot or at least warm most of the year. The times when you'd want a fire are pretty rare. Same thing with my wood-burning fireplace inside. If I had a girlfriend or something, maybe I'd build a fire and we'd watch a movie on the couch or something, but I'm not bothering with that shit just to hang around my house. If I get cold, I'll turn up the thermostat.[Edited on July 30, 2013 at 10:57 PM. Reason : ]

holy shiiiit - that is a beautiful...patio? throne?where is my invite
7/30/2013 11:27:08 PM
yep, just a back patio. the covered part was just a concrete slab when I bought the house...I got some matching bricks and we did the patio. He did most of the skilled labor...I did a lot of digging, tamping, concrete mixing, and stone cutting.i'd love to sit out there in the fall and winter with acoustic guitars and jam, but seriously, almost everyone I know lives 45 minutes away.
7/30/2013 11:36:46 PM
join a softball team in your area! host post-game festivities at your house. It would be a tragedy for that beautiful patio to go to waste
7/30/2013 11:46:20 PM
Didn't you cut one of the stones in the shape of NC? Or was that someone else.
7/31/2013 8:56:34 AM
I didn't have to cut it all that much...it was pretty close already, which is what gave me the idea."Before"

he loved it! and his brother (who also lives in NorCal) said firepits are very popular and frequently used out there, so hopefully it will get some use and not just collect dust.
