I've got a list of positions here at an automotive engineering consulting firm. They include things like computational fluid dynamics modeling, performance simulation, engine hardware system development, engine component design and release, engine calibration, and controls development. It's for both diesel and light duty gas engines. Experience with combustion development, turbos, and gasoline direct injection are definitely welcome. The positions are located in Southeast Michigan so you or the interested person would have to be living there or willing to relocate (not sure about relocation packages). PM me and I can send you the list.

would any of these be engineering abstracted enough from application that an out of work nuke engineer/physic major could do them?

I'm gonna sayyyyyy.....[no]

If you've done application engineering, component design release (working on the 3D CAD design, picking supplier, etc), 1D (GT Power) or 3D modeling (Star CD), I'd say yes. If you've designed relatively sophisticated controls (using Matlab Simulink) or calibrated/tuned embedded control modules (ATI, dSpace, and especially ETAS development systems) then yes. I'd say aviation, heavy duty machinery, maybe locomotives or other type of product development could carry over. Or maybe some advanced research qualifications. Working for a nationally recognized company would help.I'm just kind of throwing this out there. Maybe some of you who might not be a good fit would know some people. The projects are typically based on doing advanced powertrain development. PM me and I'll give you a link to the list if you're curious.[Edited on July 27, 2013 at 9:44 AM. Reason : .]
