"@AGoldFan: I'll say this, if Lindholm plays in Sweden instead of Raleigh this year then this would be the worst draft ever for the Canes"
6/30/2013 6:02:38 PM
lol noted hockey expert Adam GoldJudging the outcome of a draft on what an 18 year old kid does for one season is pretty fucking stupid.[Edited on June 30, 2013 at 6:10 PM. Reason : .]

McBain and our 2nd round pick sent to Buffalo for Andrej Sekera.HF implodes.
6/30/2013 6:23:41 PM
What a fucking stupid trade. Rutherford has lost his fucking mind. God damn it!
6/30/2013 6:32:16 PM
I'd have liked to see a little more coming back our way. A 3rd or a 4th round pick. But whatever.I'm not expecting sekera to be great, but I think he'll at least be closer to an even player than McBain ever was.
6/30/2013 6:53:33 PM
Why JR still have a job after all these years puzzles me. The guy is a horrible talent evaluator, just take a look at our farm system.
6/30/2013 7:32:47 PM
Trade doesn't make much sense, but at least McBain is gone.
6/30/2013 7:42:58 PM
This will tell you how much faith I have in this franchise:I didn't know anything about the draft or any of the players that were in it and I didn't pay attention to it at all today. But I knew the reactions would be this way when I signed on here today.
6/30/2013 8:06:47 PM
The reactions will be this way no matter what. Everyone gets some guy in their head that they want their team to draft (even though they probably don't know anything about 99% of the players and the only thing they know about that particular guy is something they read on some blog) and when it doesn't happen they go ballistic. I've been guilty of it myself.

6/30/2013 9:16:21 PM
I'm fine with the trade...but did it have to be the Sabres
6/30/2013 9:22:10 PM
Sekera was also about an even player on some pretty terrible sabres teams. I'm willing to let this one play out before I indict anyone. It did suck to lose a 35th overall pick though.
6/30/2013 9:35:27 PM
yep, trading the 35th overall pick in one of the deepest draft ever, great move by JR. Just like last year we had to include Brian Duomolin in the Staal trade. No wonder why our farm system sucks ass.
6/30/2013 9:44:24 PM
And if sakera pans out and is decently competent, then what? Bitch some more? Nobody's going to be happy, its a trade off, get a piece for now, or draft someone that will take years to develop. Lest you forget we have dick all for players that worked their way up from the AHL.Is the development system a drafting issue? I'm not sure that's the case. To an extent, its possible. But 3 other teams took a chance on boychuk, because they had good enough scouting material on him, then they realized he sucks. Development is something we're terrible at, and always have been. I'd focus my anger there, personally.
6/30/2013 10:48:19 PM
From what I read on Duomolin recently he seemed to have taken a step back this past season, so I wouldn't worry yet. This is a deal that will take about 3 years to more fully know it's value (so 2 more to go). McBain and the 2nd for Sekera while potentially a slight over payment, you do. It's first addition by subtraction, move a PMD for one who is better defensively (something we needed). Second, the real dollars paid to Sekera are comparable to McBain, so Salary is a wash. Do I wish it was a 3rd so we could've drafted the goalie of the future, yeah, but you have to give to get. The defense market this summer is pathetic when Ryan Whitney is basically the cream of the crop.

Mike Komisarek to the Canes. 700 K, 1 year.I'll take it.
7/5/2013 12:38:03 PM
We've spent more on dumber shit. Can't really bitch about the contract, even if he rides pine all year.
7/5/2013 12:41:56 PM
Excellent signing
7/5/2013 12:57:06 PM
I mean, we could've signed Ryane Clowe to a 5 year/4.85 mil per year deal after coming off a concussion filled season in which he scored 3 goals....
7/5/2013 1:02:39 PM
^ I'm reading it as a sign that they've given up on re-signing David.
7/5/2013 1:13:50 PM
cant really see a downside to signing Komisarekcould work out to be a great move and we end up giving him more money on a 3 year deal if this season works out
7/5/2013 1:24:25 PM
I just don't understand the Hurricane Organization's decision making. You need someone to come in and contribute at THE BLUE LINE. Komisarek is not that person.CAREER NHL TOTALS | 2002-present GP: 519G: 14A: 63PTS: 77+/-: -15PIM: 665He's completed 1 full season since 2006. He is injury prone and not a top 4 defensemen. Seriously, what is the point of this?[Edited on July 5, 2013 at 2:02 PM. Reason : .]
7/5/2013 2:02:06 PM
Are you really using point totals to judge a stay at home defenseman?
7/5/2013 2:12:44 PM
Are you arguing that he's a top 4 defenseman?
7/5/2013 2:15:21 PM
He has been in the past and has the potential to be again, and at $700k for one year it's a god damn great gamble. You are literally the first person I have seen today to have anything negative to say about this signing. It's basically a no-lose move. We weren't going to go out and throw $4 million at someone like Rob Scuderi.
7/5/2013 2:18:32 PM
This just seems like another band-aid attempt by the Canes. I don't have anything personal against this guy and sure, he COULD have role on the team if he stays healthy, but it seems like the Hurricanes are determined not to establish a legitimate defense group with signings like this.
7/5/2013 2:30:53 PM
Many of those games he missed were not because of health, but because of him being scratched by the Leafs and eventually waived to the minors thanks to his $4.5 million cap hit. He's another one of those guys who got caught in the Toronto media circus, and how many times have we seen once great players get out of that pressure cooker and find some of their old form again? Not saying he will, but 700k is damn near league minimum. Our defense going into this season is significantly better than last year. PitkanenFaulkSekeraGleasonHarrisonKomisarekMurphyBellemore Obviously defense is not going to be the strength of the team; the money is being put into the forwards, but that group has some potential. Murphy is the x-factor; he could be legit, but there's not as much pressure now with Komisarek added. I'm just not sure what else can realistically be done to improve the defense other than a blockbuster trade like sending Skinner to someone for a great d-man, which I'm not necessarily against, but it would be opening one hole to fill another.[Edited on July 5, 2013 at 2:39 PM. Reason : .]
7/5/2013 2:37:49 PM
Some could call it a band-aid move, but it's a damn smart signing. A zero risk move, with a lot of potential. Only time will tell.In other news, Dan Ellis to the StarsPeople get so wrapped up in this big day of free agency. I'd much rather the Canes make this move than throw $4 million at a $2 million, which happens every year. If he comes in a plays smart, solid, physical D, it's a win. [Edited on July 5, 2013 at 2:41 PM. Reason : ...]
7/5/2013 2:38:34 PM
While I agree that our defense has improved....slightly, I still think we are a long ways away from being able to be a playoff contender. Defense wins championships... PERIOD. Rutherford doesn't seem to understand that concept.
