a while ago a republican senator raised a point of order to give her her 2nd warning (3 warnings and it ends, basically) because someone assisted her in putting on a back brace.

fuckingrepublicans.

I like everything about this. I like her guts and determination and I'm in total agreement with her cause. And I think the concept of filibustering is pretty gnarly in itself.

The only thing that would improve this is if she were actually reading literature - a Dickens novel, say - which made no pretense of being remotely related to abortion. Also, if she were about 20 years younger, and naked. Still, two thumbs up.

I seem to recall hearing that back in the day, you could just stand up read from a phone-book for hours on end.

Yeah her first warning was because she got off topic or whatever.

I hope she makes it. For all of America.

^^Yeah I'm not sure, maybe it's a texas state senate rule.

I think her first warning was for talking about funding for planned parenthood which was deemed off topic.

^Yeah that

Before I read the story I thought she was republican because their general rule of thumb is less government control buuuut they seem to have this one out of whack. Gtfo of my vagina.

Yeah, it is strange haha. But I'm also of the belief that church and state are separate. That line is also blurring. Fucking politics.

texas rules are different. every legislature sets their own rules. (in texas you have to speak on topic) right now they are having a lot of parliamentary inquiries about whether she can read from papers and stuff. it's hilarious because the questions are all being addressed to the president, but for each one he consults with what appears to be a thirtysomething woman next to him who is the parliamentarian, and then she tells him the answer.

she's like a little yoda on the rules and her interpretations are basically taken as the rules.

Quote :
"Wendy has been taking on tough fights her entire life. She began working after school at 14 to help support her single mother and three siblings. By 19, Wendy was a single mother herself, working two jobs to make ends meet in hopes of creating a better life for her young daughter.

Through a brochure laid on her desk by a co-worker, Wendy learned of a paralegal program at Tarrant County Community College that she thought could be the ticket to creating that better life for her young daughter. After two years of community college, Wendy transferred to Texas Christian University. With the help of academic scholarships and student loans, Wendy not only became the first person in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree, but graduated first in her class and was accepted to Harvard Law School.

After graduating with honors from Harvard Law, Wendy became a practicing attorney in Fort Worth and served nine years on the Fort Worth City Council, where she was recognized as a leader on economic development issues. As chair of the City’s Economic Development Committee, Wendy helped create numerous public/private partnerships and successfully helped to bring thousands of new jobs to Tarrant County.

Wendy was elected to the Texas Senate in 2008, defeating a longtime Republican incumbent in a race widely considered one of the biggest upsets in Texas politics in recent times. Last year, she was the lone voice to take on Governor Perry and his majority, staging a filibuster and forcing a special session in her attempt to stop $5 billion in crippling cuts to Texas public schools. Wendy’s legislative advocacy does not stop there. She authored and collaborated to pass a law that will bring justice to rape victims and jail sexual assault predators before they commit another crime by addressing Texas’ backlog of tens of thousands of DNA samples collected from sexual assaults. She filed “Texas Jobs First” legislation to give preference to Texans in the award of state contracts, protected the Veterans’ Assistance Fund from being used to fill budget gaps, and fought against the severe cuts to women’s health care.

The opportunities that Texas provided for a young Wendy Davis – quality public education, a strong community college system, college loan and grant programs for deserving students – are what made the difference in her life. Wendy knows that every Texan deserves the same opportunities to do better, and fights every day to ensure that Texas remains a state where hard work and determination are rewarded and where everybody has the chance to succeed."

If I'm understanding correctly, she was talking about how a previous bill stacked on top of this bill would compound problems for women. Senator campbell accused her of going off topic by talking about the other bill, which to me sounds like nonsense to me.

right now it really looks like the senate president is doing anything he can to fuck the filibuster.

he made the call on the final error and now he's trying to skip the senate votes on ending the filibuster that he himself actually explained earlier.

holy shit, now this is getting interesting...they've got to find some way to stall for the next two hours.

in a way, this shit is awesome. in a way, it's a nightmare. it's all that's wrong with how our legislative bodies work. form should not be placed over function, but that's what happens far too often.

that doesnt really go along with the format of the scumbag steve meme

i'm sure you're much more familiar with the intimate details of her life than i am, from reading the same wikipedia article

seems like if i busted my ass as a kid to support a tough family situation (props to her for that), i'd try not to put myself in the same situation
