wtf. this is still a thing? I thought this was just an emo offshoot back in the late 90's. I had no idea it was still happening, or that real-life adults were still practicing members of this "subculture".

Too lazy to look it up...what does it mean?

try punk subculture in the early 80s. And it's exited within various circles of punk, emo, metal, hardcore since ^ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_edge[Edited on June 19, 2013 at 11:13 AM. Reason : ]

oh i know; I wasn't trying to insinuate you should have known that or anything.
6/19/2013 11:21:16 AM
oh okay. also, can we move this to chit-chat?
6/19/2013 11:21:39 AM
I always thought it was kinda silly but I liked Minor Threat

Most people I know that are 'straightedge' these days are recovering alcoholics, having spent the majority of their 20s in a booze-induced fog. Don't know anyone who still explicitly uses the label. I think that stopped when people graduated from college.

All of the anchors (aka non 15 year olds) of the raleigh straight edge hardcore scene are all drinking and smoking weed now.Its pretty funny considering how aggro they were 6 months ago.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

straight-edge is conservatism with a punk façade
6/19/2013 12:25:11 PM
I don't think you could call Ian McKaye a "Conservative"
6/19/2013 12:28:12 PM
Ian MacKaye is irrelevant these days but straight-edge kids (and hardcore punk kids in general) are typically just bored rich white kids.`I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

The militant straight edge folks I've known are usually either incredibly naive youngsters or 3-12 months away from giving way to their existing addiction(s).I can't fault either group until they try to force what's good for them onto everyone else. I do feel that moderation is lost on them, but I usually assume people have a reason for choosing a lifestyle like this that I might not fully understand. I'm cool with them as long as they're not dicks about it.

They just sound like Mormons to me

I'd like everyone to know that I played in an x-men themed fake straight edge hardcore band.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

It's been a really long time since i've really known or even paid attention to this movement, in fact I didn't really know it still existed. Is there truly a subculture around Raleigh? Do they still wear Xs on their hands? Do they still abstain from sex?
6/19/2013 5:24:55 PM
Not sure about sex but basically theres a bunch of kids who are 15-17 who all play in hardcore bands and don't drink or smoke - which is like completely contrary to everything I did when I was that age. Typically no X's but you might see a Chain of Strength patch or something. There are a ton of really awesome straight edge hardcore bands still. Kids follow suitI'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

I saw a friend of a friend last night on instagram with his entire body tattooed, and all over his face, who is apparently hardcore in the "sXe" scene. "Ryan Edge"So I got curious and looked it up. They're definitely still around.
6/19/2013 7:10:10 PM
Yes, this is still a thing. I use them quite often.
6/20/2013 8:26:27 AM
used with one of these
6/20/2013 4:47:31 PM
What time is it?Oh, it's about Dolphin Apple Moon o'clock
6/22/2013 4:23:03 PM
It was a reference to one of the most hilariously misnamed films of all time: The Golden Compass(Its real name is an "alethiometer" and the original book was Northern Lights.)
