Going there for 12 hours in a couple days. Flying into the capitol city, but I was told by wiki that a cab fare from the airport into the city is something like $100 US one way. That seems very high. Also, despite that there currency exchange rate is pretty good compared to the Euro, local beer and food is still expensive. So, has anybody been there before that could help in avoiding tourist traps?

I'm not currently on a broad, but I expect to be later this evening. At that point, I will not know if it is the broad you are talking about, but I have not been to Iceland yet.

Well, nothing on the previous threads is answering my question. So I only got 10 to 12 hours because this is just a pit stop for me. I would like to get into the city and back within that time period. Any thoughts on how cheap or expensive this is?What should I do with just an afternoon?

I too, had a bit of a layover there. If I remember correctly, the airport really is in the middle of nowhere.
6/14/2013 4:31:47 PM
Yeah, there has to be a way for me to bus in and out in time. But based off of the cab fare, it is prolly a long trip

Bjork is a broad.
6/14/2013 4:42:36 PM
yeah i think it's a longer than normal trip from the airport into the city. my buddies are going to Iceland Airwaves in October and part of their package deal included transportation from the airport into the city because it wasn't an easy ride to secure.

If I were you, I'd find a way to those hot springs.
6/14/2013 4:48:14 PM
Nah I'm saying that I wouldn't worry about finding the most home grown taxi secret or avoiding other tourist traps because you'll just be there 12 hours, may as well just get the most in that you can.

grab some basalt samples.

with so little time, i would just go to the blue lagoon -- it's quite close to the airportit's touristy but still completely awesomei was in iceland last summer and had a rental car that we dropped off at the airport coming from reykjavik -- but check online for shuttles or something, there's got to be something cheaper than a $100 cab ride...food and drink are pretty expensive but of high quality so you can have some really nice meals, not sure this matters if you're only there for 12 hrs thoughactually, i just googled and found flybus (http://www.re.is/Flybus/) -- looks to be ~$30 return[Edited on June 15, 2013 at 4:47 AM. Reason : flybus]

The airport really is in the middle of nowhere but you do not have to take a taxi to get into the city. There is a bus that runs very regularly between the airport and the main bus station in the city (keep in mind that the bus station isnt the most centrally located but is walkable to places of interest). The bus was pretty cheap and you'll have plenty of time to take it into the city and do a brief tour of the high notes before heading back for your flight. That said, if I had to do it all over again, I would probably hit up the blue lagoon as previously suggested. It's much closer to the airport and damn relaxing between flights.

Thanks for the tip. A part of me really wants to see the city and meet people, but I am considering the blue lagoon since so many have suggested it.[Edited on June 15, 2013 at 12:16 PM. Reason : On second thought, it looks like a giant tourist trap.]

If your layover is anything like the few times that I've flown Iceland Air (assuming you are going from the US to Europe) you will arrive REALLY early in the morning and fly out late afternoon. These are hardly prime people meeting hours. That said, if the weather is nice out, go into the city and wander around (I know a person that even managed a whale watching tour during their layover there). If the weather sucks, go to the blue lagoon.
