my one experience with a travel agent confirmed what i had thought all along: they're unnecessary for anyone with a basic understanding of how to use teh intarwebsi didn't have a choice and had to go through her agency, but she didn't save us any money (especially when she took out her "fees")...though, to her credit, she did recommend something that my wife and i hadn't considered and we ended up doing it and it worked out wellin addition to their obvious use pre-internet, i think they were also free because they'd get a kickback from whatever arrangements they made on your behalf

I was kinda forced to use the fiancee's "family travel agent" for our honeymoon plans recently and it was kinda "meh". I didn't get any discounts, but I didn't have to pay any fees either (she got a kickback from the resort for booking us). Everything she did or found for us I could have done over the internet...but she did save us a little time. The one advantage was that she did all of the booking with planes and the hotel and such...which although it's not like it saved us a ton of time...I guess it was a tad convenient.I doubt I'll use her again, but it wasn't a bad experience.
