I'm shocked there isn't a thread on this already. The movie was absolutely spectacular.I re-read the book a couple of days before going to see it and was very impressed with the accuracy of the story. A few things were missing but it didn't take away from the story as a whole.

5/10/2013 4:32:48 PM
BRIGHTFLASHYTHINGS
5/10/2013 4:51:04 PM
^^ what? the whole thing is centered on gatsby's relationship with daisy
5/10/2013 8:12:11 PM
Yeah, that's why the book ends when Gatsby and Daisy are reunited.OH WAIT.The Gatsby/Daisy relationship is so far from being the point of the book, I don't even know what to say.
5/10/2013 9:00:48 PM
oh godplease tell me you don't think that The Great Gatsby is a love storyplease please please
5/10/2013 9:01:52 PM
5/10/2013 9:51:24 PM
more tragedy than "love story". sure, you can read plenty more into the story if you'd like, but the whole dang thing hinges on gatsby's obsession with daisy.
5/10/2013 9:53:46 PM
But not as a person.
5/10/2013 9:55:44 PM
i would hope so, cause her character was a pretty crappy person
5/10/2013 9:57:33 PM
Watched it. I thought it was good. Hell you could even say it was great.
5/10/2013 10:03:17 PM
I didn't like it but I didn't hate it. 6/10Felt way too long

I haven't even heard about this. Do movies not advertise anymore?
5/11/2013 8:00:23 PM
i was going to see this movie yesterday until i learned it's in 3D and the soundtrack includes rap and dubstep. what in the fuck?
5/11/2013 8:35:54 PM
Then someone told me this Luhrmann guy trucks in anachronism. Who knew?
5/11/2013 9:34:52 PM
you're a very rude mani've never heard of that guy until now[Edited on May 11, 2013 at 10:36 PM. Reason : .]

Seriously? Moulin Rouge? Romeo + Juliet with Leo and Claire Danes? Both Baz Lurhmann.Australia too, but I don't think many saw that.
5/11/2013 11:26:41 PM
I actually really like Strictly Ballroom, but I think if he'd had the money then to make it look as garish as possible, it would've suffered.I almost walked out of Moulin Rouge in the first five minutes. Jesus.

5/12/2013 12:20:58 AM
This was the first movie of his I've watched, and I enjoyed it.
5/12/2013 11:16:48 AM
I'm not going to lie I thought this was decent. It was nothing amazing but I think it touched on the parts of the book I thought stood out the most. The visual style was impressive. Yet, I've just never liked Leo in anything.
5/12/2013 11:03:39 PM
seriously? Leo is a great actor (at risk of sounding ~)
5/13/2013 9:43:31 AM
I would so fuck that guy (not in a gay way)
5/13/2013 9:46:34 AM
I didn't like Leo when Titanic and Romeo+Juliet came out, I avoided him for a while and never saw The Beach or Man in the Iron Mask. But then came Catch Me if You Can, gangs of New York, The Departed, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island, Inception...he's done some pretty good things in his time.
5/13/2013 6:33:45 PM
^agreed 100%I'll give any new Leo movie a chance nowadays if he's starring in it
5/13/2013 6:36:17 PM
5/13/2013 7:48:05 PM
Haven't seen Django yet but I plan to.Regardless, this is a decent movie. As a huge fan of the book, I really enjoyed how the story was told. I didn't quite like the psychiatrist scenes but it made sense as a method of telling a story written through internal monologue.I REALLY enjoyed the Buchanans and the Wilsons. Great casting calls all around.
5/13/2013 9:27:18 PM
I really enjoyed the movie but why did they go with a lot of modern/hip hop music in some scenes. Seemed really out of place and an odd choice.
5/16/2013 10:30:49 PM
^ Luhrmann loves those anachronistic touches. Nothing more to it than that.HOLY FUCK DO I HATE CGI SETSIt's not such a big deal when they digital composite things like traffic and explosions, but this total green screen deal for easily replicable environments usually looks like garbage.P.S. The Aviator rules.
5/16/2013 10:34:43 PM
Don't really know much about Luhrmann but I can accept that I just don't understand it. It was just an afterthought.
5/16/2013 10:46:54 PM
the hip hop in the trailer made me completely not want to see it
5/16/2013 11:04:36 PM
maybe seeing this tomorrow night. i just really, really wish they had signed pretty much anybody but tobey macguire. the rest of the casting looks great
5/16/2013 11:48:28 PM
Here's a question: a lot of people (not just in this thread) are making a big deal about the music, but I didn't hear a lot of complaints like that about Django Unchained. Is it just because GG is such an "iconic" story that you shouldn't play around with it?
5/17/2013 2:38:35 AM
that weird remix toward the end of django totally took me out of itbut so did the super loud woman sitting directly beside me. so I haven't said much about django in general because it didn't really get a fair unhampered-by-obnoxious-people viewing[Edited on May 17, 2013 at 3:01 AM. Reason : ,]
5/17/2013 3:00:56 AM
I haven't seen Django Unchained yet so can't really compare.

Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman were both still in high school. It doesn't get any better than them.

I saw it last night and surprisingly enjoyed it. The visuals and the roaring twenties feel were definitely the best parts. It seems like a lot of people hated the music but i thought it gave a fun, modern taste to the movie.

Great book, good movie.Party scenes were awesome. The Great Gatsby is not strictly a period piece, so the modern music didn't detract.I love Leo, but there were too many close ups. The movie should have cultivated more mystery about Gatsby like in the book; before his complete vulnerability is revealed.
