The ones between Cameron Village Library and Broughton High School? I've read mixed reviews and I don't mind window A/C units. Just wondering if anyone has lived there first hand. I just need a 1BR around downtown that won't break the bank.

I've got some time though. Landlord is selling our current house July 31. budget is <800 incl. everything.

The lady at the desk for Cameron Court across from St. Marys was realllly snotty and didn't make me wanna live there. Grosvenor Gardens next door to that is too expensive.

I banged a girl that lived there and it was just a little old for my style.

you can get something much nicer and more up to date with that rent.

the window unit wasnt the problem...the issue has to do with the lack of insulation, caulking, etc...

youre constantly pumping electricity.

they are ok i guess just a bit old.

if you see a window unit, you will almost always see astronomical power bills. they normally correlate to improperly and cheaply built structures that are aging with little to no proper maintenance; insulation is often non-existent or insufficient; caulking is probably gone or severely cracked; windows are often wood and cracked/have gaps, single pane windows, damaged weatherstripping; insufficient attic ventilation; not to mention that window units are already power hogs... sitting in a window, which is already one of the least efficient areas of a structure, sitting through a window frame and was likely not installed/maintained to keep a good seal around the unit.

Always. Run. Away.

Think about it this way, pay 600 rent and $200 for electric in a crappy apartment. Or pay 800$ for a nice apartment.

I currently live in an apartment complex off Duraleigh, and my current rent is around $670. This will soon go to around $700 which is getting kind of expensive for some of the shit I have to deal with.

I have found quite a few places in the Millbrook/Lynn Road/Six Forks area that are cheaper, or a similar price. Places like

are just a few of my finds. Of course, I am looking for a 1 bedroom, which is so much more expensive than a two bedroom (which is usually just $100 more!)

If you don't mind a very small place (566 sq. ft. to be exact) drive along Daniels street and look for "For Rent" signs at the Cameron Village Condos II (the grey and brick units on the west side). I lived there for 3 years and they weren't bad. Still not far from window units--they have an in-wall heat/AC combo similar to what you might find in a hotel--but it's a step up and I wasn't usually too hot or too cold. They're individually owned and rented so there's no property office though and your rent may vary.

If you can deal with the lack of space, great location and not a bad property. Just don't bring too much stuff with you! My rent was cheap--I think only $495/mo--but this was from 2004 to 2007 so it's likely gone up.

Check out Hayes Barton Square in Five Points. My gf was living in a two bedroom that was 725, and I know they have some open units over there. It's nice enough (hardwoods, big windows, screen porches on every unit), and they've been updating units as people move out of them so the empty ones should be freshened.

How much do other people pay to live alone? I don't know how people could afford $1,000 rent. I wouldn't mind having a roommate actually, but when I first got my place 2 years ago, I didn't have much of a choice.

Other than the place I lived at about a year ago which was a shittty apartment, I haven't really seen much cheaper than $640 (The Beckanna).

If the walls/ceiling weren't so thin and the neighbors weren't partying all the time, I would move back to that crappy apartment. The utilities were surprisingly affordable and it was 1200 square feet with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths ($560/month).

Where are you getting that price from? Their website lists studio apartments at $720 and 1 BR from $780.

I have $3,000 of college loans left over... so that's not the issue. I guess I just don't make the big bucks like some of you guys. Thanks for the advice so far! I actually really like my place, but I liked it better at the $60 less per month price that I payed two years ago.

I'm at the Beckanna we have a 1 br and our rent is like 692 with a 20 dollar addition because of the dog. The apartment is pretty nice and we haven't had any complaints so far. with internet and electricity and water it should come out to less than 800.

Also I used to live at the Raleigh Apts. and I'd avoid the place, the location was nice but the power bill was expensive there was plumbing leaks, no insulation, the baseboard heating was another huge powersink that no one else has mentioned as well as not working all that well and limiting furniture layout.
