is there a rule that if you leave Texas, you are required to tell everyone about how great Texas is at any opportunity? And that even if the topic of conversation is not about Texas, are you required to make it about Texas? I assume this is an organized campaign to get people to move to or visit Texas?

I feel like I'm onto something, I've been to Texas and its pretty shitty, so this is the only thing that makes sense. our new hire from Texas is driving me crazy.

I am not from Texas but live here currently, and people here are groomed to have an excessive pride about their state. It is obvious even in television advertisements from cars to prescription glasses- they always throw in some line about how being from Texas makes you luckier/ better/ smarter/ so you best buy this stuff to continue to be luckier/ better/ smarter.

i'm moving to dallas in a month. so far the people seem okay, the food is cool, but the two biggest issues are the geography (lack of varied vegetation and elevations changes - everything is flat and brown with shrubs) and the significant conservatism (think north carolina current legislature for 50 years).

the job market is great and there are a lot of great people, though. i'm looking forward to it.

I lived in Austin for 6 years. All that I can say is that the State for the most part is a complete shit hole. It is unbearably hot from March untill early october, and then it is rainy for the duration of what most people would call winter. There is no fall and no real spring. And to further compound the issue, there is not so much tree coverage so you are exposed to direct sunlight the majority of the time which makes hanging out at a park very difficult.

Texans are brainwashed into thinking that it is such a great place and the majority of them don't leave it, which means that you are constantly around lunatics that will not tolerate any rational commentary about it. The State run government is also extremely conservative, and there is definitely the presence of an old money gentry every where.

Austin is nice for a couple reasons, but all of which have to deal with the music scene and clubing. It is an expensive city to live in and it is not getting cheaper. There is also an intrisic hipster culture there that is not friendly to people not from Austin. But if you are into music, you like good beer and smoking weed, then I think that it might be a more affordable version of NYC or Portland. But, why not just move to where the weather is more bearable.

I’ve lived in Texas (Houston) for the past 16 months and here is my opinion. Texas fucking loves Texas. They have fucking Texas addition pick-up trucks. Have you ever seen a Ford F150 Tarheel Edition….no…Lonestar Edition pick-ups are all over. These are the things I like about Texas, Houston specifically….

Weather – I actually like the weather here. Being able to where shorts and flip flops year round is pretty nice. Also, pools are open all year. I don’t care that we really don’t have a winter because there is no chance of snow. I only like the winter because of snow.
Palm Trees – Just something cool about living in a climate where palm trees grow all over the place
Economy – the economy is strong here. Tons of jobs especially if you are in engineering. Cost of living is low, wages are high.
Football – Football is king here. GO TEXANS!!
Tex-Mex – Best Tex-Mex and margaritas ever.
Entertainment – There is always something to do. Festivals, concerts, special events are routine.
Downtown – It’s kind of nice to live in a city with a proper downtown. The skyline is pretty impressive.
Relatively close to Rocky Mountains – I say relatively compared to NC. I can drive to Colorado in 16 hours. Did it this past February and it was awesome!!

This is what sucks….

TRAFFIC!!
Beaches –Yeah I can get to Galveston in an hour but the beach is terrible. South Padre is nice but it is a fucking 6 hour drive from Houston.

I see myself living here another two years or so. Basically enough time to advance my career at which point I’ll be looking for new opportunities. I really really want to move to the Denver CO area. It is beckoning me!!

All that being said my heart is in NC and I will return. My wife actually made a list of things she misses from nC and I figured it was appropriate to list them here….

I live in Dallas and it is pretty nice, if you have any questions about the area let me know, would be glad to help.

I have spent about half my life in TX, specifically San Antonio and Dallas and the way too proud of Texas guy is pretty annoying but no where near as bad as the way too proud of Cleveland person. Cleveland fucking sucks but people from there seem to love it. Texas has some pretty cool stuff to it, some pretty amazing parks (ie Big Bend), lots of outdoors stuff to do, awesome food, plenty of sports teams, a good economy, plenty of jobs, etc.

People just love bashing other places on this site. Any place you visit or live is what you make of it. I lived in BFE Kansas for 3.5 years and while it was not as cool as Raleigh or Charleston, etc in terms of shit to do, I find myself missing the place because the people were awesome and I enjoyed the simple life style it provided. I guess I am just old and don't really care how many bars/clubs there are in a community.

moved to Dallas in 2016 and i've really enjoyed it. The suburbs are worse than the suburbs i was around on the east coast, but i live and work in the city and spend almost all of my time there and it's treated me well.

I'm not a big fan of Texas, but the Dallas/Ft Worth metro is definitely my least favorite region of the state. It just goes on and on in either direction forever, bland and beige. Austin, despite it's problems with traffic and overcrowding, is blowing up vertically downtown and it has a real pulse of young energy. San Antonio, has rich German architecture and a nice Mexican flair to it. Houston is diverse and has the charms of the Southeastern US, and people are genuinely friendly, despite the constant eye sores of the petroleum industry wherever you drive. But Dallas? I just don't see how so many people can live there, seemingly happy, when the local culture is the Dallas Cowboys, high school football, shopping malls, and a never ending mess of freeways. And I'm talking about Dallas proper btw.

My experience living here the last 3.5 years has been very, very different than what you describe. That's what I THOUGHT the culture was going to be in Dallas (and it gave me major hesitations) but, while that is certainly prevalent here if that's what you're looking for, it is not the dominating culture nor does it define the area. What you described feels much more like the suburb culture here. I really don't get involved in any of that or see any of that myself.

Austin is great still in a lot of ways. I could definitely live there, though the growth is really uneven and in some cases a little unstable from an infrastructure standpoint. I love to visit though and we get there several times a year.

San Antonio is cool to visit now and then, but not a place I'd want to live personally. It does have tourist charm though.

Houston is fine. If I had to live there, I would probably grow to appreciate what it offers and it's probably pretty neutral across the board with Dallas. Better in some ways, worse in others. I personally don't really like it, but I've only visited a few times. I prefer Dallas.

Things I like about DFW:

-The food scene, while not as good as other cities of similar population (fluffed up because of the suburbs), is actually quite excellent still. Lots of choices and lots of great chefs.

-The bar and cocktail scene is very solid. I'm a big cocktail nerd and we have a lot of really top notch options.

-Our museum scene is really, really good. The DMA, Nasher, Kimbell, and the Modern are all very good. The Warehouse is a great invite-only museum. To have the quality of these museums all in close proximity is excellent. We are museum members and go to a lot of the events to meet authors and artists etc. Between these museums, we almost always get all of the highest tier exhibits that tour the US.

-The music industry here is well represented and from a touring stop standpoint Dallas is the best place I have ever lived (and live music is one of the most important things to me and my wife outside of work). One neighborhood alone has 9 or 10 true, quality music venues (not including any 'bars' that also have live music) for large local/touring artists that range from 250 to 2000 capacity all within a handful of blocks. This doesn't include the other half dozen+ solid music venues in other neighborhoods. Almost every single band or artist I ever want to see hits Dallas on tours, usually in a venue <15 mins away from me. There are not many other cities in the entire country that have a better setup from this standpoint. There are also a decent amount of musicians I enjoy or respect who are from the area, are associated with the area, or frequent the area I love. I've gotten to meet some pretty awesome people just candidly walking around the city (Jack White, Brian May, Tegan and Sara, Billy Corgan, Annie Clark for example)

-Following up on above, solid local music scene. (Though, I got spoiled in the triangle area because that region really punches above its weight due to the college culture in the area)

-Performance theater here is very good. While it is not NYC or LA, the DFW area has some of the best performance dance quality (ballet, modern, contemporary mainly) of any city I have lived in.

-Dallas has a lot of pop-up warehouse parties/events that you kind of have to get in the know about at times. Immersive theater, dance parties, warehouse invite-only themed parties, high quality fetish and subculture events (drag, suspension, etc.)

-I enjoy that Dallas has true 'neighborhoods' from an entertainment standpoint. Not that different than other cities of its size, but each really does have their own personality so it provides good variety and you don't feel like you're going to the same places all the time. (Deep Ellum, Lakewood, Knox/Henderson, Cedars, Bishop Arts, Kessler, Uptown, Downtown, etc.)

-Great tattoo culture (Texas in general though). Not as good overall as Austin, but really high quality artists and lots of great artists stop through to guest at peoples' shops.

-Good arts/culture/fashion feeling in general here. Lots of local artists who I am legitimately impressed with to the level that it feels only a small notch below NYC, Chicago, LA, SF, even if the quantity is lagging those cities. This is from sculpture, painting, fashion, performance standpoint.

-The dance culture is the best of anywhere i've lived. And I don't mean 'clubs' or trendy/exclusive (aka shitty) bars. I mean quality DJs, inclusive, dive-bar feeling dance places that are packed and an absolute blast every weekend. Brooke Humphries has a lot to do with this. (We have one of the original Beauty Bars here). If youve ever seen the movie Party Monsters, she's portrayed in that movie. But she has a lot to do with the level of the dance culture in Dallas (and back in the day, probably a lot of the level of drug culture in that scene too ha).

-Good roller skating culture, and we love to go roller skating.

-Since Dallas proper is a zone of transplants (this has negative and positive impacts) there is a reasonable amount of diversity and a lot of different, interesting people I've been able to meet and become friends with from all across the country. Where some people perceive this as a negative (mostly locals in the suburbs), it's really been a positive for me. Always new faces and new people.

-Great modern architecture options, especially MCM, for home-buying.

-Public transit is half decent. I spent my first 3 years here mostly without using a car. Train, bike, bus, walking mostly. Now that we bought a house, We are 2.5 miles from the train station I use so I do drive to my train every morning.

-We have 2 major airports that are both fairly easily accessible in 15-30 mins depending on where we go. Cheap, direct, short flights everywhere for trips.

-If you're into sports (im admittedly not really these days) we do have relevant teams in all major sports.

Is Dallas my dream city? Definitely not. I can still point out quite a few flaws, some of which may never be fixed. However, the view I had of Dallas before living here was largely what you described and my experience of living here has been anything but. Whenever someone here complains that there is nothing to do, I just roll my eyes. My wife and I are at interesting social events, art events, or out enjoying the nightlife 3-4 nights a week every single week and we wish we had more time to get to all the stuff we'd like to do every week.

also, 'dallas proper' is still a pretty huge land mass with vastly different areas culturally.

The picture below covers the majority of 'DFW'. The blue is roughly Dallas proper. The red is roughly the urban core of Dallas. I spend 99.9% of my time purely within the red.
