It is now up for discussionhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/should-e-cigs-be-banned-indoors-in-dc/2013/04/09/19ae0a2e-a14d-11e2-82bc-511538ae90a4_story.html?hpid=z3I see people "smoking" them all the time in bars, restaurants, in buildings, and on the metro. Doesn't bother me at all. Thoughts?[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 6:38 PM. Reason : Kk]
4/9/2013 6:13:15 PM
what's the point? all the harm is relegated only to the smoker with them, I thought
4/9/2013 6:23:06 PM
next up: kids pretending to be smoking when it's so cold outside you can see your breath will be sent to juvi
4/9/2013 6:25:14 PM
I dunno. This is the first ive heard of someone being bothered by them...
4/9/2013 6:25:23 PM
we should ban even thinking about smoking cigarettes
4/9/2013 6:26:22 PM
4/9/2013 6:28:37 PM
Wait, what. This is bonkers. They don't even produce smoke, there's no feasible health risk. The only thing that could be deemed offensive is the SIGHT of people smoking, which has no more validity to regulation than offensive cologne or not liking people with exposed muffin-tops.
4/9/2013 6:29:00 PM
i supported the ban of smoking in restaurants and public places......but this is ridiculous[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 6:35 PM. Reason : i'm learning to be more tolerant]
4/9/2013 6:32:44 PM
I'd rather ban babies and kids than e-cigs, this country is retarded
4/9/2013 6:36:34 PM
If they ban e cigs then they need to ban smelly perfume and lotions and farting and bad breath.
4/9/2013 6:42:07 PM
Also, ban elise turning down my unwarranted sexual advances[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 6:43 PM. Reason : Annoying as fuck]
4/9/2013 6:43:10 PM
They should ban any artificial chemical emissions from a person that aren't for the purpose of entertaining 2 or more other people. And there should be an absolute ban on emissions that are toxic unless otherwise approved.Who wants to be eating, then have someones fake smoke blow across their face? That's like if i went up to someone and burped in their mouth while they were chewing their food.[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 6:47 PM. Reason : ]

I only smoke Newports
4/9/2013 6:46:47 PM
That is correct.

About three years ago I almost got kicked out of a Columbus Crew game for using one
4/9/2013 6:54:36 PM
I've never smelled an e-cig. The most I've ever seen is a very fine vapor mist that dissipates before it gets 2 inches from the "smoker's" mouth.Do you all have different experiences?
4/9/2013 6:55:51 PM
this thread makes me laugh
4/9/2013 6:59:34 PM
4/9/2013 7:05:31 PM
i don't have any experience with them... i always assumed that the vapor contained harmful chemicals just like cigarette smoke... do they not?
4/9/2013 7:13:50 PM
^ i don't think so...granted, i know nothing about them, nor have i bothered to google, but i thought the "smoke" was just water vapor
4/9/2013 7:15:15 PM
They never bothered me, but then a pair of dudes came in my store using some shit that smelled just like pancake syrup. It was an incredibly obnoxious smell.I wouldn't ban them, but I also wouldn't hesitate to ask someone to stop with some obnoxious flavor/scent near me.
4/9/2013 7:31:19 PM
4/9/2013 7:34:10 PM
i loved these things as a kid, but i remember the end being red. can't believe my parents let me get them.
4/9/2013 7:38:44 PM
Can we fucking ban drinking in public places? Fuck some rowdy drunk motherfuckersI'm Krallum and I approved this message.

Anybody else think those commercials with Stephen Dorff are hilarious?
4/9/2013 7:54:25 PM
I gotta have my juice
4/9/2013 8:06:26 PM
Just ban nicotine.
4/9/2013 8:07:40 PM
the vapor from e-ciggs is not harmful to others in second hand formhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23033998this is quote from the study located in the national library of medicine: CONCLUSIONS:For all byproducts measured, electronic cigarettes produce very small exposures relative to tobacco cigarettes. The study indicates no apparent risk to human health from e-cigarette emissions based on the compounds analyzed.
4/9/2013 8:47:51 PM
man this is so stupidthis really works me up so much
4/9/2013 8:50:46 PM
So, people want these banned because they don't like how the smell and/or the sight/appearance of "smoking"? Doesn't seem like something worth banning. And I have pretty much no experience being around people who use these...
4/9/2013 8:56:22 PM
rip in bars....... a drink and a nice cancer stick
4/9/2013 9:02:30 PM
from what I understand...the only thing that the smoker takes in is nicotine...the vapor is nothing more than water vapor.also, fwiw I've heard that nicotine is not really harmful to an individual other than just causing an addiction...and that by smoking e-cigs it's the same as basically quitting because there isn't anything harmful being taken in...that last part could also be directly from e-cig companies so it might be wrongI should also get off the internet after drinking those strawberry bud light limes...those things are fucking delish!
4/9/2013 9:57:00 PM
I have a co-worker who smokes these at his desk sometimes. (At my workplace e-cigs are allowed anywhere, whereas actual cigarettes are allowed only in smoking lounges and certain conference rooms. I work on the Philip Morris campus btw.) I actually think the scent of the vapor is rather pleasant, but it's faint, and I'm sure depending on what "flavor" you use it could be offensive. Personally I think banning them in public is dumb because it's such a negligible health risk. On the other hand, I can see someone who is overly concerned about any scents and/or legitimately allergic or asthmatic being up in arms. But they also get worked up over perfume, woodburning fireplaces, smoke from kitchens, etc., so it's just one more thing on the list.
4/9/2013 10:01:29 PM
^^LOL I just saw those strawberry things in the store today and was strangely attracted to them. I did not get them because I am a paragon of self-control.And, for what it's worth, nicotine is actually kind of bad for you...like your heart and whatnot. But it's worth it.[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 10:02 PM. Reason : ]

You should totally try it...it's like you are drinking bud light lime...and then the strawberries show up and have a fucking party in your mouth and liver!
4/9/2013 10:06:35 PM
I've heard something about e-cigs causing emphysema? Is there a mythbuster on this?
4/9/2013 10:08:37 PM
from what I understand the vapor contains glycerinenon-toxic but if you've ever breathed fog machine smoke for hours it CAN cause you to develop a coughbut if we're talking about banning second-hand fog juice I'm just going to go ahead and retire my balls because we clearly aren't using those things in the US anymore
4/9/2013 10:28:53 PM
everybody is butthurt
4/9/2013 10:32:03 PM
I don't really know what precisely is in the 'smoke' exhaled by the user. My decision on treating them like standard cigarettes would really hinge on what's in it. If its non carcinogenic, I don't give a damn, but I'd like to see the data before I let someone use it in my car or house or something. I've pointed out the flavor someone was smoking from across the room before. So, it does linger to an extent. Does the flavor smell matter? If it is safe, I guess its no more obnoxious than 'too much perfume lady'.... If it ingrains itself into fabrics and shit, I can't say I would want it around me.

^What could his co-worker have been doing instead?I'm so curious now. Also, whatever it is, I think I might want to start doing it.
4/9/2013 10:53:37 PM
I use an ecig. The chemical in them is propylene glycol, found in everything from smokemachines to food preservatives to antifreeze. its labeled as non hazardous by the FDA.The "vapor" is technically harmless, but certain flavors do have a certain scent to them. The scent probably comes from the flavoring, not the actual chemical. I think banning them in restaurants is a bit much...its not a scent thats anywhere close to "making your clothes smell" or even one that you could pick out unless you knew someone used an ecig. From every study ive seen, ecig second hand "smoke" which dissipates immediately, is completely harmless to those around. I dont use mine in public places out of respect for others, but i also dont think the scent is anywhere near the smell of lotions/perfumes.Some ecigs use vegetable glycerin instead, but most are propylene glycol[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 11:02 PM. can we ban oak trees? their pollen is harmful
4/9/2013 11:01:07 PM
4/9/2013 11:03:17 PM
4/9/2013 11:04:57 PM
^^possibly, but id always heard it was in antifreeze as well..could be wrong.Point it, it appears to be one of those compounds found in everything...even some bad things, but isnt THE chemical that makes them dangerous. I do think its a very common chemical in foodpreservation, so we eat it quite alot[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 11:08 PM. Reason : arrows]
4/9/2013 11:07:21 PM
Propylene glycol also is used as an antifreeze.[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 11:09 PM. Reason : especially in food/drug applications. ]
